Most heartbreaking lines from a book ever...

Mine has to be this one...

Then she was pressing her little proud broken self against his face, as close as she could get, and then they died.

I cried so hard the three times I've read the book (I haven't put the name of the book in case of spoilers) - what lines got to you?

Jacques. Yes it is! I’ve got the omnibus edition which includes all the other novels that run into each other. I read it so much I had to buy a new copy!!

Jaimx86 · 17/10/2017 16:49

MongerTruffle I was just about to write the same quotes, along with the description of Candy's dog Sad

MaroonPencil · 17/10/2017 16:47

I agree that " done because we are too menny" is the most awful, heart wrenching line in any book ever. It's a line that gets into your brain even if you never want to remember it again.

JacquesHammer · 17/10/2017 16:45

@mydogmate it absolutely amazing isn't it?

quaqua · 17/10/2017 16:45

'Bring me the two most precious things in the city,'said God to one of his angels; and the angel brought him the leaden heart and the dead bird.

Urglewurgle · 17/10/2017 16:43

Not a quote but as PP said, the end of My Sister's keeper made me snotty cry and I had to go get a cuddle. Same with Dobby, I'm still too mad about that.

It took me a fair few goes to get past the opening credits of The boy in the striped pajamas after reading the book, not sure I'll deal with Charlotte Grey.

Kannet · 17/10/2017 16:40

Mine is from “the twelve”. I haven’t for the exact quote to hand, but a mother watches her child being killed and runs towards death. The line says “ the definition of hell is to live one second longer than your child”

WhataHexIgotinto · 17/10/2017 16:40

But now that I am old and grey
My dancing nights are done
I've chosen you, great grandchild
To take my place, so come ...

MongerTruffle · 17/10/2017 16:40

"And then she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck."

"And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the mussel of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering."

(both from the same book)

My daughter (10) has a chromosome disorder, that went undiagnosed for years. Her main disability being she cannot speak. When we were going through those awful first years of seeking an answer, I was recommended a book written by the father of a non verbal child & his struggles with her disability. In it he writes a letter to her & even now 6 years on it breaks my heart as it sums up my emotions then, & still now.

I'm sorry,
I'm sorry you went to bed crying tonight,on Christmas of all nights, because you wanted one thing & we wanted another, and none of us had the tools to communicate those things clearly to each other. We were stern with you,and when we closed your door,we left you crying with hurt & rage, and most of all I think, with frustration.
It ends with -
I'd give anything for you,Schuyler, anything at all to make you happy & to fix what's broken & to set you free in a world that you're equipped to live in.I'd burn down the whole world for you if it would change things. Instead, all I can say is that I'm sorry, dreadfully sorry.I love you so much my heart breaks for you every night.I know that doesn't help you,not one bit,but tonight it's all I have.

mydogmymate · 17/10/2017 16:37

Jacques
“ the doctors who told her not to have any more children didn’t lie.** It killed her”
( I’ve paraphrased).* I’ve read that book so many times. It’s amazing.*

LadyWire · 17/10/2017 16:34

Lily? After all this time?

Always.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/10/2017 16:33

Poor bloody dora

coldcanary · 17/10/2017 16:31

Fgs you lot Sad
I came on to post the Little Matchgirl quote, I’ve got a book with the most beautiful picture of the little girl being taken to heaven by her Mother that makes me well up every time I see it.
Also Dogger: ‘Then Bella did something very kind’
Absolutely floors me and I can’t actually read the book outloud anymore.

JacquesHammer · 17/10/2017 16:26

"But I think she would have been happy with Fabrice" I said. "He was the great love of her life, you know."

"Oh dulling," said my mother, sadly. "One always thinks that. Every, every time."

Running I can't read the end of The House at Pooh Corner to my DC without crying too much to finish it, and I have to hand it over to my DH while they're all Confused

The first time I read Jude the Obscure I found that whole bit with the children too unbelievable to be affecting, but that was before I had DC - might be different if I read it again. Since I bloody cry at everything now Gogglebox every week

Schmoopy · 17/10/2017 16:22

Choccywoccyhooha

I came on this thread to post that exact quote.

The only line in a book I've ever cried at and I do every time without fail.

Didactylos · 17/10/2017 16:20

'done because we are too many'

Walkthroughthefire · 17/10/2017 16:18

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/10/2017 16:14

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 17/10/2017 16:13

“You think Okay, I get it, I'm prepared for the worst, but you hold out that small hope, see, and that's what fucks you up. That's what kills you.”

― Stephen King, Joy land

He is talking about that phone call you get, the one where you are waiting for a loved ones hospital results or its 11pm at night and not everyone is home yet

SecretSquirreller · 17/10/2017 16:02
