SorchaMumsnet · 04/10/2017 11:33

Imagine a world where dinosaurs have survived… and evolved. Welcome to the world of Supersaurs! Find out more about the first book in this exciting adventure series, ideal for readers aged 9+.

Bea Kingsley lives in a world where humans live side by side with 'saurs' – a world in which her parents disappeared when she was just a baby.

So when her and her formidable grandmother and her godfather suddenly embark on a trip to the remote islands of Aru to see the elusive Raptors of Paradise, Bea starts asking questions. Was the journey to the islands a dangerous mistake, or the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime?

We ask all winners to share their child's thoughts on the book. Everyone who posts their detailed feedback by midday, Monday 11 December will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Love2shop voucher.

*a book for boys not books🙈

Foreveryseason · 14/12/2017 11:37

Thanks so much for our copy of this book. I'm sorry it's taken so long to get feedback written but that's actually the main part of my feedback. My DD (10) is an absolute bookworm. Devours them! So I thought she'd love this but she has tried and tried to get into it but just can't. She knew I was going to give her feedback so made the effort to plough on with it but she's just not getting into it.
She has said she finds that "it takes pages describe something that could be much better described quicker". I do wonder how much she was put off by the cover as she thought it looked like "a book for books or people who love dinosaurs" rather than an adventure story. She's not a particularly girly girl either and reads across the spectrum.
Sorry, this one just wasn't for her. It's still not finished. But I'm hanging on to it for her younger sister I think she'll enjoy it more.

Thanks again for the opportunity to review.

unfortunately my son didn't finish the book, he tried a couple of times but it didn't grab his attention and he felt it was just too slow/detailed to interest him

Great book. Surprisingly believable story, well written and superb illustrations. I think it will be a big hit!

Many thanks to Mumsnet / Piccadilly Press for a copy of this book. Our young reader had the following to say -->

"Overall, it is a good book. It has a really exciting cover - it makes you want to read on. The drawings inside are also not bad, but may have been in colour like the cover as the shading/computer colour blends made the art look too greyish, a bit like rubbed down dirt. The story idea is excellent - it's interesting having dinosaurs exist in the modern day world (or near-modern day world as this is set in 1932). But we have seen this idea before in Jurassic Park / Jurassic World, so it is not original. The story itself had a slow beginning, but the action picked up as the story went on. It is a long book, but people who like reading a lot and are interested in dinosaurs and adventure stories will enjoy the book!"

I was so surprised to have won the book as I don't win anything normally. I have kept the book to give to my Grandson for Christmas so I have read the book myself. It is awesome and I recommend more adults read it. I could not put it down once I started. Its easy to read and the illustrations are brilliant and I got totally engrossed with the characters and the different dinosaurs. Bea and Sammy were the main characters and their adventures were amazing. I will certainly buy the next 'Stegosorcerer' book. Please let me know when it is available. I cannot wait for my 12 year old Grandsons opinion as I know he will love it! Well done Jay Jay Burridge!

RainyDaisy · 05/12/2017 22:38

Thank you for the book. My son aged 9 (just, but very mature) is a little book worm and I have always been proud of his reading ability and the types of books he reads. I applied for this giveaway as I thought he would love the book.

I am sorry to say that he just couldn't get into it. He found it a bit hard going. I tried reading him a few pages thinking that after the first chapter or two he would be hooked and then he would read himself. But he still wasn't interested. I'm really sorry!

I am going to make an effort to read the whole book to him even if he doesn't read it himself as I'm sure that it will be fabulous.

Again - so sorry!

DS aged 11 read this book and he did enjoy it. I was worried it might be a little young for him and that he might not like the lead character being female but he very much enjoyed it. He said the language used stopped it being too young. He enjoyed the illustrations especially as most books for his age group do not have illustrations. He really liked the factfiles about dinosaurs at the end. Both he and myself liked the concept of the book, it was an intriguing idea and sparked his imagination. He liked the format of the book as a hardcover but not too cumbersome. He mostly read it in bed so hadn’t explored the app yet. He did read about it but he enjoys books as a stand-alone thing and isn’t really bothered about interactive features. He says he’d like to read more books in the series. We’ve moved the book onto his 7-year-old brother’s shelf now as he thinks he will enjoy it. Thank you for sending us the book to review.

Thesqueezermustghost · 29/11/2017 12:28

My DS (10) enjoyed this book. He was really keen to try the app and after some initial confusion worked it out and was very impressed with the look of the drawings and the way they emerge and also enhance the story. It is perfect for him as he loves the online world and finds it totally natural for things to extend into it or out of it. He loves long books and said that he enjoyed getting totally stuck in this world and imagining dinosaurs still alive - made him wish it were true. It has been a long time since he was very keen on dinosaurs, but he was really intrigued by getting a fuller picture of how a dinosaur might compare to animals we know today. He loved the characters, especially Bea. I think he would be keen to see the next in the series.

wheresthel1ght · 21/11/2017 21:20

I entered for my 11 year old stepdaughter, she is normally keen on things like this and an avid reader. However she has struggled to be enthused, the cover has really put her off - she says it is clearly meant to be for boys to read and not girls.

After some serious nagging she read the first few pages and has not touched in since, she has found it a bit hard going and difficult to really get into. Sorry!

pauline046 · 20/11/2017 20:59

My 10yr old Grandson is Dinosaur mad from Dino's in his bedroom to tubs full in my living room, at 3yrs old at nursery the teacher was talking all about different ones & he told her that she had got the names wrong, after she checked up on it Connor was right so he helped tell the other kids all about them.
So the book is perfect for him, he loves reading at bed time & so far he is loving the twists & turns & can't wait to read more.
A perfect book for a Dinosaur fan xx

user1488557965 · 20/11/2017 19:22

My 10yr old grandson loved this book.

molly57 · 20/11/2017 10:43

This is a fabulous book to keep a child enthralled until the end. Makes your child want to go on an adventure and wonders why there are no 'saurs' or raptors like these in the real world. The illustration are magical.

GranAnn42 · 18/11/2017 20:21

received the book a few days ago. Going to give it to my grandson when I next sse him.

lucyrobinson · 18/11/2017 18:22

I am reading this to my 7 year old son. He is finding it quite hard going. We are going to finish it. Lovely pictures. I am trying to read a chapter a night. I am enjoying the story.

Vonklump · 17/11/2017 21:18

My son is part way through this and is enjoying it. the app is a bonus, and we were very impressed with the images when we tried it out, but he mostly reads the book in bed, which is a screen free zone.

Even without the app at the time of reading the story is a hit.

Thankyou

Moodykat · 17/11/2017 18:42

Thank you so much for the book. DS is very nearly 9 and reads way above his age group but he did find it hard going and gave up. I skim read parts and agree that the pictures are beautiful and it seemed to be really nicely written... almost old fashioned in the best possible way. My friend has a 9 nearly 10 year old daughter and I might pass on to her as I think she will really enjoy it.

Sorry to not be more help.

midi1975 · 17/11/2017 18:22

Great story and lovely illustrations. An interesting adventure story which is, surprisingly, believable.Loved by C(9) who read it by herself and L. (7) who also read some of it by himself, but had some read to him.. Highly recommended , whether you are a dinosaur fan,or not.

asuwere · 13/11/2017 12:38

Thanks for this book!
DS (9) has loved it. He didn't realise about the interactive app part until he was nearly finished but is glad as he says he wouldn't want to read it and have his tablet at the same time so is happy now to go through and bring the pictures to life and play the game.
He thoroughly enjoyed the story and said that it was written so well that he was able to picture everything clearly in his head and felt that he was actually in the story. He is looking forward to the next one in the series!
It is a lovely looking book - nice to have hardbook but it's not too heavy and the illustrations are great. It has a grown up reading feel about it. It's a perfect book for that age group and I've added it to my present list for party gifts.

tworonnies1957 · 08/11/2017 23:11

the kids loved this book the oldest like the fact that Bea was a girl and a bit of tomboy like she is, both liked the beautiful illustrations there is a real bond between the animals and the people which was good to teach children that both man and beast can live together be great if this book could be made into a film

VicKWhish · 07/11/2017 18:59

Thank you for our copy! This review is from Theo age 11.
One of my favourite parts of the book are the illustrations. You instantly want to read it. On the first page there is an insert of the Earth, coming from the Sauria trading company. The characters you can really see what they are like. Even the names help, like Christian Hayters and Biggie. The shadow raptors are my favourite and you don’t even need to read its inclusion in the little guide at the back. Imagine if in Jurassic Park, the velociraptors could talk.I just really think the shadow raptors are the best because we can all imagine real raptors like them and the ability to talk, just is amazing!
It’s a really thrilling story, with the bond between human and animal - two animals that lived 65000,000 years separate bonding.
Theodore is a lot like Indiana Jones. He’s just the character Dr Jones would be if Indiana got a job at Jurassic Park. The key to a good book is if the first chapter is great. This book achieves that. The prologue is on,y a page but sums up what is happening with the bandits on the spice island. The start of each chapter is always good and the book ends in just the right place for a sequel which I believe to be the Stegosorcerer.
It’s quite long and does focus on the bandits a little too much. If there is one thing we could improve in the book, is that I would like to see the dinosaurs defend the main characters in the middle part. The rest of the book, I have no complaints.
The book really makes you think about dinosaurs. Could they actually have spoken other animal noises? I really like that idea!
This book is so good at dinosaur knowledge and the made-up ones are such good dinosaurs, I would love a real shadow raptor!

katb1973 · 07/11/2017 14:49

Another fabulous book Mumsnet. My 10 year old was in heaven. Storyline was based on Bea, whose adventurer parents disappeared when she was a baby, Bunty, her grandmother and best friend Theodore exploring the dinosaur infested island determined to solve the mystery of where her parents are. We downloaded the app on my phone and the added thrill of watching the pictures literally jumping off the page made this book irresistable. He also loved the list of dinosuars on the back pages and referred back to them over and over again as he read. Great stocking stuffer this Christmas.

tiddledpink · 07/11/2017 10:10

So we've just finished our copy and I have to say it has been a massive hit.

Everything from the cover, to the illustrations have been a refreshing change to the books we have been reading together recently and it's almost a throwback to the books I enjoyed when I was the age of both DSS and DN.

The book itself has clearly been written in such away that the reader feels completely transported and immersed in the world within the book.

Initially we thought that having Bea as the main character might put DS off but he genuinely didn't care and frequently commented on 'how awesome that girls life is'.

It has been amazing to see both kids completely engrossed in a book, and completely fascinated by the illustrations. We are already on the lookout for book number 2 and can't wait to download the app to really bring the illustrations to life.

Both the boys have declared the book is:
*funny
*really clever
*totally awesome

OH and I are now fielding questions about being able to go to Indonesia and bring a dinosaur back home.

A huge thumbs up from us!

I enter this for my 8 year old son who is mildly autistic he found it a bit heavy going and gave up . My 9 year old daughter was at first a little un unsure by the cover of the book and though it would not be for her either. However after a bit of persuasion from me she gave it a go and couldn't put it down . She said it was" exciting with an old fashion style a bit like Enid Blyton. (who she loves) I felt like I was in another world"
The book looks very traditional and its reminiscent of books I read as a child. Hard back is somewhat of a novelty these days and went down well with my kids. Once she finished it she encouraged my son to try it again. We have been taking turns to read it with and to him and he is now enjoying it.
I Think this book is charming in that it mixes traditional with contemporary and the illustrations are just stunning .Thank you for sending me this book , I have a feeling it will be treasured and passed on for a long time.

TracyKNixon · 06/11/2017 09:15

My 12 year old son has just finished this book and he really enjoyed it! It cleverly merges the world of interactive and the traditional - a pop up book using modern tech. It's a clever way to get kids immersed in what we all grew up with - a good old book! The way the images come to life are not a gimmick though - the story is engaging and even when he doesn't have his iPod, my son loves to lose himself in the adventures.
I'll defo be buying the rest of this series for my son to enjoy! Thank you for the recommendation and free copy!
