I really fucking love books

I do. They are the one constant in my life, they've never let me down. It doesn't matter what happens during the day, 7.30pm, DC in bed,out comes the pile (or the Kindle).

I don't have money for holidays - doesn't matter because after 7.30 I can travel to any country I like, and some that don't even exist. When there's no happy endings in real life, open a book and you're swimming in them.

I love them. They're the best things ever. My life would be a barren, lonely wasteland without them. Books have given me so much. Wonderful, clever people out there have written them just to enrich my life, to give me pleasure, or knowledge, to help me relax, mostly for free as their book costs me nothing from the library (or £2.81 from Amazon at the most)

Fabulous bloody things.

I grew up surrounded by books, my dad wouldn't read fiction but he had loads of non-fiction, my mum read romances and my brother read sci-fi/fantasy. I read everything, and still do. Reading is my happy place.

Was it the OP who was recommended The Woman in White? I would also recommend The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, one of my favorite books, with a fabulous interfering spinster in it and wonderful characterisations.

Me too! I love books in any language that I speak and any format! I love audiobooks at the dentist especially though! They get me through route canals. Grin

Matilda2013 · 08/05/2017 20:54

I came from a whole house that didn't read Hmm hence why I can read in any noise. People find that very weird but you could drop a bomb and I probably wouldn't budge.

Trying to encourage reading in my home with my dsd and dp although he only reads biographies about people with better lives apparently!

mizu · 08/05/2017 19:26

Love reading books too and have always read. And read every night before I go to sleep - as well as often having a bath so I can get in it with a good book.

Two DDs who read too, one more than the other but we have lots of books in the house.

DH, on the other hand, doesn't read at all!!

SkiBike007 · 07/05/2017 15:29

Love all the suggestions on here.

I love escaping in a book and my oldest DD is the same but is finding it harder to draw herself away from tablet computer. My youngest is speeding through the reading levels so I hope we can install a love of books before gadgets take over!

Bookreader2403 · 05/05/2017 11:44

I love books too! I eat, sleep and drink them. I am always trawling amazon online, bookstores etc to get new ideas and am addicted to BookTube too :-)

There is nothing better than cosying up with a gripping novel. I'm currently reading Little Deaths by Emma Flint and I cannot put it down! I can't imagine not having a book to turn to, to escape to. 📚📚📚📚

Mrs Makka - see you have "Star of the Sea" on your list, I just loved that book, possibly one of my all time favourites. It was on Richard and Judy's book club list a dozen or so years ago. I wouldn't have chosen that book without their review. I'm now always scouring other people's best reads. I have MN to thank for other favourites, Middlesex, The Poisonwood Bible, The Blind Assassin, The Quincunx. You never know when you start a book whether it's going to be one that will stay with you for years to come and induce a state of euphoria when reading it. Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass and The Water Babies did that for me in childhood. Have managed to imbue the desire to read for life, I think, in one of my children, but sadly not the other.

SplitInfinitive · 05/05/2017 09:33

When DH and I got married, we had our honeymoon in Hay on Wye Smile. Happy times spent browsing books and sitting in cafes drinking coffee, eating cake and reading books. It was mid winter, cold and snowy, and we were very happy.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 05/05/2017 09:27

I love books with a passion, a home is a sad place without books, shelves groaning under the weight of dvds and and shed loads of gadgetry, but not a book in sight, unless you include the Argos catalogue. I feel sad for the children growing up in such a place. I'm almost glad I grew up in a time when there wasn't much in the way of tv for children and laptops, mobiles and Ipads were light years away. My mother took us to the library as tots and the joy of selecting those early books and then getting our very own books at birthdays and Christmas imbued me with what became a life long love of reading. I also remember those long summe school holidays, with not a lot to do, given an uplift when the card from our local library arrived through the post informing me that the books I had ordered for a few pence were in. I'd sit in the garden with a bag of sherbet lemons and an Enid Blyton as happy as Larry. I'm always buying books, I still have my childrens' early books that my young grandchildren seem to enjoy. I'd rather spend half an hour browsing Waterstones these days than any clothes or shoe shops. I just can't stop buying them, I never catch up with all the books I want to read, husband and I always have a book on the go, always. Best way to get to sleep or take your mind off the annoyances of life. So good to know others feel the same. I believe there are still a few of us out there given all the other distractions around.

Love this thread! Always have two books on the go : one adult fiction or non fiction, plus one children's / YA, which I need to keep up with for work, but would read anyway as there is so much good stuff out there. Also audiobook on phone in car. Just finished Neil Gaiman reading Ocean at The End of the Lane- brilliant.

Matilda2013 · 04/05/2017 15:16

26 books down this year! And I've just finished The Butterfly Garden - Dot Hutchison has anyone read it? I thoroughly enjoyed it if that's the right word for something creepy

SorchaMumsnet · 04/05/2017 14:29

Hi all - just moving this on over to Books. Shout if that's a problem, OP! x

MusicToMyEars800 · 01/05/2017 18:20

< Rejoices > YES!! I have found my people Grin I am wanting to read a good book, you know the ones where you are hooked by the first page and you can't put down, any recommendations?

LondonCharlady · 01/05/2017 16:17

I've read the 100 year old man, I loved it.

Natsku · 01/05/2017 15:42

Couldn't live without books! I've not been able to get on with e-books, find it difficult to focus when reading on a screen so its physical books for me and I am slowly building up my library although mostly I borrow books from the library to read but whenever I go to a second hand shop I buy all the books there are that are in English (live abroad so there's only a handful usually). I have built up a pretty impressive library for DD and she can't even read yet!

BarbaraofSeville · 01/05/2017 15:41

Allan the 100 year old man reminds me of Sydney Alford, an explosives expert who is on Dave or the Discovery Channel and DP thinks he is/was great (not sure if he is still alive).

BarbaraofSeville · 01/05/2017 15:39

I've read the 100 year old man and really liked it, even though it gets a bit silly in places.

DP is a big reader but can't usually think of books he wants to read and I keep telling him to try it. If he gets as far as when Allan gets on the bus after a couple of chapters, he'll be intrigued and hooked.

I don't have any thoughts on people who don't display books. We have hundreds of books but they're in our kindles. The only books on display are cook books and travel guide books. I don't bother with the library either. I don't like reading paper books any more and our library charges £2 to reserve a book, which is ridiculous when I can buy the kindle version for 99p in most cases if I wait. I currently have about 200 unread books that I have bought at that price, so don't need to pay any more than that.

MusicToMyEars800 · 01/05/2017 15:31

My dd also has got my love of books Grin has anyone read the 100 year old man? I thought it was a really good book, but haven't found anyone who's read it yet.

user1489179512 · 01/05/2017 15:10

What do people think about people who do not own books - or if they do possess a few they must be well hidden? In all our rooms there are books. And books.

No book should be in the loo, of course. That is a bit grim - no matter how palatial it is.

grannytomine · 01/05/2017 14:52

Totally agree, I love books and I love my library. Free books or if you want them to reserve something or get it from another library then it is 50p. Absolute bargain.

SplitInfinitive · 01/05/2017 14:48

I love that quotation, Cakes. Alan Bennett is one of my all time favourite writers.

SplitInfinitive · 01/05/2017 14:45

Oops, bold quote didn't work - was quoting Magimedi

Matilda2013 · 01/05/2017 14:44

I post my list on the fifty books but I think they're normally discussing things a bit more high brow than what I read Smile

SplitInfinitive · 01/05/2017 14:43

*Although I don't post on this thread, I lurk & have had some amazing recommendations from it. Lots of past threads as well:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/what_were_reading/2906184-50-Book-Challenge-Part-Five?msgid=68407061*

I used to post on those threads, ynder a different NN but still check it out for recommendations. I did find it sometimes got a little competitive and discussions a bit fraught :)

Matilda2013 · 01/05/2017 14:39

You're all my people. I love books and can't remember not loving them. Was also that child forced outside on sunny days that just took my book with me and sat down Grin

Stepdaughter is 6 and now reading and the other night was reading to herself in her room. Still reads out loud so I was so proud to hear her Smile she's inheriting my love of books and I got her her first library card.

Trying to not spend as much on books at the moment so have been reserving from my wish list from the library for free and it's awesome!
