To celebrate the release of Bear Grylls' new adventure series for kids, we gave away a whopping 250 books.

Each story in the 12-book series follows a different child on camp as they receive a magical compass, allowing them to travel to an amazing place where they meet Bear himself, and learn new skills and facts that they can take back with them to real life. The books are suitable for children aged 5-7.

We ask all winners to share their child's thoughts about either The Blizzard Challenge or The Desert Challenge on this discussion thread. Everyone who gives detailed feedback on either book by 5pm, Friday 9 June will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Love2shop voucher:

My 10 year old granddaughter, loved the Blizzard Challenge. Just starting the Guides so she was thrilled to have it. She said it was very exciting but hoped she wouldn't have to camp in the snow! Thank you again Mumsnet.

Beeziekn33ze · 10/07/2017 18:38

Thank you for The Blizzard Challenge! A reluctant reader of 8 thoroughly enjoyed it!

dmeriam · 13/06/2017 10:48

My 8 year old son recieved the Blizzard Challange and he loved it. He has always been a reluctant reader, but this one hit the right button - it was the first novel he has ever read independently, and he immediately asked for me to order him the Desert Challange, which I did, and he loved that too. He loves animals and adventure, and these books really appealed to him. When pressed, he said he loved the bit where the main character had to dance around naked to warm up when he'd fallen in icy water, and he found it absolutely hilarious.
We will look out for more books in this series.

Just as a follow up the book has been through my daughter & nephew & she is now passing it round the kids in her class. It is a big hit particularly with the boys. We love the way that Bear can engage the kids. Excellent. We are looking at getting other books in the series.

Thanks for the copy of The Desert Challenge
Read with my son and he loved the illustrations too. Great concept of overcoming fears in simple ways, interesting enough to keep entertained

hanbee · 11/06/2017 11:48

My 6 year old son has really enjoyed this book. A he is a Beaver he knows who Bear Grylls is and immediately assumed the story would be an outdoor adventure. He read the desert challenge in one sitting. I was especially pleased that he read it without commenting on the fact that the protagonist was a girl, so few adventure type stories have a girl as the lead character.

It was pitched at a perfect level for him to read alone (he has a reading age of 7.5) but work just as well as a bedtime story. When I read through it I was disappointed with the ending, it would have been better to show the character escaping the desert using the skills rather than just magically leaving it. I loved the empathy shown at the end though and the fact that the main character reflected upon Omar's unpleasant behaviour and how it was because he was feeling difficulty feelings.

bshah22 · 09/06/2017 15:02

Excellent book with good illustrations and well thought out story line! Length is just right to keep them attentive!

leanneth · 09/06/2017 14:46

Thank you for sending The Desert Challenge for my DS (5).
We read it together, a few chapters at a time. He is a good reader but I felt it was a bit too difficult for him to read alone- there were a few bits I had to explain as we were reading. I couldn't imagine any other reception class children picking this up and reading it by themselves, without some sort of adult explanation here and there. As a book to read together though, it was good.

The front cover didn't look particularly appealing, like others have said - if it hadn't said Bear Grylls on it, I don't think I would have picked it up. Very glad we received and read it though, it was full of interesting facts as well as the moral about giving things a go and not being afraid of insects!

We would both like to read others in the story- I want to know what happens to Omar!

Overall, a good book full of interesting facts although probably for slightly older children, starting at age 6 or 7?

Thanks again for giving us a chance to review this book.

akindredspirit · 09/06/2017 14:09

Thank you for Ava's copy of Bear Grylls Adventures- The Desert Challenge. She was particularly impressed that she had 'won' it!
We read it together and she really loved it. She enjoyed the survival aspects (having brothers she is quite an adventurer) and enjoyed chatting to us about the story. We will be buying some more in the series.

rupert23 · 08/06/2017 21:49

midi1975 · 08/06/2017 21:15

C. (9) found the book to be exciting and interesting. She really liked the tips. It was read in just one evening, she couldn't it down. We have since bought the other book in the series.

Thanks for sending us the book. My daughter and I have read through the book over the last couple of evenings together. From the very beginning the story dives straight into the action with the main female character Sophie playing five-a-side football. Both my daughter and I felt it was refreshing to have a girl as the main protagonist rather than a boy. The book also promotes physical activity from the start with football games and obstacle courses.

The language used is simple and easy to understand, I felt it might be aimed for an audience a little bit younger than my daughter Evie, who has just turned eleven. I think she would have appreciated something a little more complex.

The conflict is introduced in the second chapter. When a crane fly enters Sophie's tent, her phobia of insects reveals itself. The protagonist is gifted a "magic compass" by a boy who seems to be aware of how embarrassed Sophie feels over her fear of creepy crawlies. I am sure many children can identify with an anxiety surrounding bugs so hopefully this book could help them to start understanding and dealing with their own fears.

The reader is introduced to Bear Grylls at the end of the third chapter after Sophie is transported to the desert by the compass. During their time in the desert Sophie questions Bear on many different topics. Evie and I felt that this was good because not only did it reflect real childlike behaviour, it reassured us that Sophie was safe with Bear who has knowledge of their surroundings and also taught us (the reader) desert facts.

We felt that Bear really put his own stamp on this book when he kills a scorpion to eat. I feel that young Bear Grylls fans would enjoy reading these parts. In the end the conflict is resolved, and Sophie overcomes her fears after Bear's teachings in the desert and she is ricocheted straight back into her obstacle race at the campsite. Evie liked the sentiment at the end of the story which sees Sophie pass on her compass to Omar who also displays unease at the sight of an insect.

Overall therefore, we felt the characters were likeable, the plot was well structured and Bear's teachings helped the young reader to learn facts about how to survive in the desert and about the desert itself. The only criticism I have is that I felt it maybe it should have been aimed at an older audience with more complex sentences, the reason for this being that I feel Bear Grylls young fans maybe slightly older than the age range that this book is intended.

Evie and I particularly liked the questions at the end that helped us to recap over the things we had learnt and I thought that this would be particularly helpful if your child was reading the book alone but wanted to talk over the story with a parent at the end. Evie said in future it would be nice to see a non-fiction collection from Bear Grylls with lots of photographs, facts, quizzes, puzzles and physical activities. Thanks for sending this free book and hope this review has been useful.

My 6 yr old received the blizzard challenge and we quickly started it. My lb really enjoyed it especially the bit in a snow hole. He was fascinated as to why it was warm and that they didn't freeze. We will definitely look out for the other books in the series

kazn81 · 08/06/2017 20:35

My 8 year old son was so pleased and surprised when we received our free Bear Grylls book, the blizzard challenge. He is a big Bear Grylls fan and a loves reading so he was very excited to get stuck in. He loved the story and all the facts and information about survival that Bear is known for. He loved the front cover and very much enjoyed reading it and is looking forward to buying the other story by Bear Grylls.

WottyMcWottFace · 08/06/2017 17:22

Lilly was very excited to receive the desert book she began reading immediately, although she's not an out doorsy girl she loves bear and really enjoyed the book. It was easy ready, quite simple but she is quite advanced for her age group, it was really good how the survival skills were integrated into the book. Overall fun reading, cover a little underwhelming but overall she was happy

sidekickchick · 08/06/2017 17:14

My 7 year old daughter got a copy of The Desert Challenge. It was great to see an adventure story with a girl as the lead character. My daughter loves Bear Grylls too and read this in an evening and the following morning. Nice to have her reading a book without a fairy in sight :-)

shelaghh · 08/06/2017 14:47

My son loved reading the book. He even agreed with the forward note in the book that reads " TO THE YOUNG ADVENTURER READING THIS BOOK FOR THE FIRST TIME- MAY YOUR EYES ALWAYS BE WIDE OPEN TO ADVENTURE, AND YOUR HEART FULL OF COURAGE AND DETERMINATION TO SEE YOUR DREAMS THROUGH ""

HOW TRUE !!

mitalmanda · 08/06/2017 12:56

Thank you for our copy of.....A Bear Grylls Adventure 2: The Desert Challenge....certainly a book suited to my daughter who is more of a tomboy, so loving the little girl Sophie going on adventures. The cover looked fun and interesting, adventures with snakes in the desert! We love getting out and about without the creepy crawlies just like in the story, so all the tips are on board. My daughter is 9yrs but struggles with reading lots of text so suited her and the story kept her interested too; making a change from any stereotypical girly books. Would recommend and will be buying more from the series too.

Witchend · 08/06/2017 12:30

Ds enjoyed it (9yo) but found it a little easier than I expected. He's have enjoyed it more a couple of years ago. I've passed it on to a friend whose dd loves BG and she is loving it, I'm told.

Amma2010 · 08/06/2017 09:07

Thank you for our copy of the Desert adventures. This was my 7 year old daughter's first Bear Grylls book. According to her she enjoyed reading the book as it was interesting. It did take her a bit longer than normal to finish reading the book but she seems happy with the story. She liked Bear Grylls' character the most as he taught Sophie how to survive in a desert.

scarrick87 · 08/06/2017 04:24

My daughter loved this and liked that the girl overcame her fears. Another great hit. Thankyou x

katiewalters · 07/06/2017 23:30

dewdneyk · 07/06/2017 20:51

Blizzard Challenge was a hit here. Great story that keeps moving and kept the attention of two small children. Will be looking for the others in the series.

hutchy73 · 07/06/2017 20:09

My 6 ( nearly 7)year old enjoyed this book but it wasn't his favourite . He got bored with it after a while. He is a beaver so enjoyed the survival bits. He may be a bit young for it so may try it again in a couple if years . He may lend it to his friends who loves bear grylls !

nishthefish · 07/06/2017 20:04

My six year old son thought the Bear Grylls book was 'really good'. He liked the names of the characters and enjoyed reading their adventures. He is looking forward to reading the other books.
