As a clue to his interests, he's enjoyed in recent years:

Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy
Noughts and Crosses
The Tunnels series
Maze Runner

he's not enjoyed:
Percy Jackson
Non-modern fiction

I'm just a bit stumped and I need to add something to my Amazon order to get free delivery :)

How about The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks .. or The Crow Road by the same author?

The Wasp Factory is quite dark, but I would totally have coped with it at 16

If he liked hitchhikers guide he might enjoy the disc world series? (Terry Pratchett) The advantage of that being that there's sod loads of them so if he likes them he will have reading material for the next few years!

Curse Workers series.
I am buying this for my 16yo, but I suspect it's not to all tastes.

He's mature but innocent :o

That series looks like it may be the very thing - thanks! :)
