It's a timeless story, almost still relevant today.

KarenCBC · 21/04/2016 23:23

I love P&P because it's story is universal. From the original, to Bridget Jones to this and even the film Bride and Prejudice, the story can be used in any setting, time or space, and stays just as fresh. Curtis Sittenfeld is my absolute favourite modern author and so this pairing couldn't be better!

BoatyMcBoat · 21/04/2016 16:47

Gosh, I've just realised that that means I've been reading it for nigh on 50 years! 50 next year! Wow.

BoatyMcBoat · 21/04/2016 16:46

P&P is full of wonderful, wonderfully drawn, characters. It is also a perfect illustration of what life choices were available to women (of a certain 'class') back then, and shows how far society has moved forward.

The main reason I love it though is because my godfather gave me a copy of it for my 8th birthday and I actually read it. Didn't understand it of course, and perhaps didn't even enjoy it, but I read it at least once a year thereafter, understanding more with each reading. It showed me that you can start something which seems insurmountable at first, but keep trying. I haven't read it for years now, and will dig it out. It's about time I gave it another airing.

mummytime · 21/04/2016 12:23

I'm another love P and P person who thinks this sounds awful - sorry. I did enjoy Bride and Prejudice though.

MaryEllen1 · 21/04/2016 11:59

I love pride and prejudice as its the ultimate love story. True love prevails in the end and there is an innocence about the story that you don't have these days.

raereadsblogger1 · 21/04/2016 11:51

The characters are so diverse in Pride and Prejudice. They really make the book come to life. The story itself has stood the test of time and after reading it numerous times it is still one of my favourites!

Susangilley7 · 20/04/2016 21:01

I love Pride and Prejudice. It is like an old friend. Have seen TV and film versions so many times. Love the characters.

Flossiesmummy · 20/04/2016 18:46

I love P&P because I think everyone has had an interest in someone they couldn't stand when they first met!
Sometimes you don't even want to like them, but you just can't help it. We've all been there!

AnneElliott · 20/04/2016 15:03

I love it as you can read it in so many levels. The first time you read it, it's taken at face value whereas for me the humour and irony became apparent on the second reading.

I've read it so many times and yet I still find it funny and get something else out of it each time.

Mozarmstrong · 20/04/2016 14:26

Classic novel if you love reading absolute pleasure into their world. I say read and enjoy.

SuzCG · 20/04/2016 13:38

I studied Pride & Prejudice for my English Lit many years ago now and whilst I may not have been that keen to begin with - I certainly grew to love it. Classic books are that for a reason - despite the passing years that are still entertaining & engaging, and P&P is definitely this. Lizzie Bennett was a hero of her time, refusing to conform and the book contains characters of all descriptions. Life never really changes, despite modern advances. This book doesn't either - it's as great today as it was then!

flso · 20/04/2016 12:41

I love Pride and Prejudice because it is the book that got me hooked on classic fiction, and now I have read soooo many of the classics and love them! Pride and Prejudice is timeless, which is why people can still read and relate to it today.

Fink · 20/04/2016 11:10

I love it for many reasons, but the best bit (outside the swooning romantic scenes) is Lizzie & Miss Bingley walking around the room so that Miss B. can attract Mr Darcy's attention by making him look at the woman he really fancies!

Shaler · 20/04/2016 11:00

What's not to love about Pride and Prejudice?! A so-called "novel of manners" first published in 1813, it is so much more than that. I studied it for my A-levels and from the cover expected it to be dreary! Well I learnt there and then never to judge a book by it's cover and to be careful of "First Impressions" (the original title of Pride and Prejudice). A pure joy to read, Jane Austen modestly said it was "rather too light, and bright, and sparkling" but I disagree! :D It is the ultimate "happy ever after" tale, light and vivid but satirical and funny at the same time with one of the wittiest opening lines ever written. A strong female heroine plus a tremendous cast of characters and interesting sub-plots. Plus there is sex, lies, hypocrisy and scandal! A social commentary of the time, it's themes and characters still resonate today which is why it would be interesting to see how Curtis Sittenfeld translates them to modern day.

greenclip · 20/04/2016 07:52

It's a classic. Most modern romance films have the same themes as P&P. It's clever how P&P can resonate with people in such a different world to when it was written.

GinBunny · 20/04/2016 00:15

I love Pride and Prejudice. I love how Elizabeth is so feisty and has her own mind despite the expectations of the era, a true feminist in the making. I love the Pantomime Dame that is Mrs Bennett, she's a brilliantly moulded character. I love how Mr Darcy goes from hated villain to romantic lead. I love how it's touted as a romantic novel but that's so far from the truth, it's about challenging convention, mistaken impressions and so many wrong judgements that come around. It's brilliant, and I would love to see a modern day take on it.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 19/04/2016 23:02

This has just made me look at it again. I love the more understated bits of humour especially, and the way the relationships are drawn. Just found the bit where Elizabeth decides that Darcy needs to learn to be laughed at, which I liked!

cressetmama · 19/04/2016 21:14

I loved it at eight, when I didn't understand it, but liked the story. It survived intensive A level re-reading, and is still one of the novels I take on holiday in case everything new disappoints me, It comes up fresh as paint each time, and I like Mr Bennett more every read.

MrsKCastle · 19/04/2016 20:59

Ooh, Jane Austen is one of my favourite authors. In Pride & Prejudice, Lizzie is such a fantastic heroine. I love the way she gets muddy, speaks her mind and refuses to be in awe of others. I could always identify with Lizzie. And of course Mr Darcy is a favourite as well!

clockbuscanada · 19/04/2016 20:54

I've tried so hard to like Pride & Prejudice but it just leaves me feeling meh every time I attempt to read it. I'm one of those people who find Northanger Abbey more lively, more fun, more readable, but Prep is one of my top ten all time favourite modern novels so I'm hoping Curtis Sittenfeld will find a way to make me love P&P, too.

Buttons23 · 19/04/2016 20:46

I love P&P because it is timeless. It is still enjoyable and relatable as it was when it was first released. It's funny and entertaining and I love the character of Elizabeth and her parents.

cityrat79 · 19/04/2016 20:00

Because Darcy seems like a bastard but isn't. This is the opposite of men in real life.

BoGrainger · 19/04/2016 19:00

Best book of all time. Not a word wasted on page-filling descriptions, landscapes, explanations etc. just a work of pure genius that can be read over and over again.

Littleallovertheshop · 19/04/2016 18:09

I love Pride and Prejudice because 200 Years and so many adaptations later yet it's still timeless. I adore Mr Collins for being so horrendous and Mrs Bennett is hilarious. There's someone in the book to identify with at every stage of life.
