I am a fast reader and am looking for a challenge. Any suggestions for an epic read? I loved The Stand but have exhausted all Stephen King books. I just want something I will finish in one sitting..Grin

The Balkan Trilogy by Olivia Manning. Easy read and an interesting period in history.

Anna Karenina*

The only book that has ever defeated me. Three times now. I've got to a certain point each time and just can't seem to push past it and I lose the book or put it away or something.

HappySpills · 11/04/2015 21:55

Sorry not Childhood's End, I'm getting confused. There are the Robot books too.

HappySpills · 11/04/2015 21:50

Ooh. Foundation books? Childhood's End etc.? 2001 etc.?

HappySpills · 11/04/2015 21:48

Anything written by Salman Rushdie seems to last me aaaages.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 11/04/2015 21:43

Ah yes, River God. Big but quite easy reads IMHO.

Margaret Atwood's books all seem rather weighty?

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 11/04/2015 21:42

I'm currently enjoying Pillars of the Earth. The sequel is World Without End. Equally massive.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/04/2015 21:39

Yes to, 'The Passage' and its follow up, 'The Twelve.' They are by Justin Cronin.

'Pillars of the Earth' is a fatty and is quite diverting, but not terribly well written. I thought the follow up to it, which I have forgotten the name of, was awful though.

HappySpills · 11/04/2015 21:36

Dune etc.?
River God etc.?
The Culture series?

yogabird · 11/04/2015 21:32

Another vote for This Thing of Darkness - an amazing book

And Pillars of the Earth

But I hated The Goldfinch, the last third of it got so tedious and in fact I didn't finish it - left about the last 30 pages :-0

LBOCS · 11/04/2015 21:24

I'm so fucking lazy, my kindle was right next to me.

It's called The Century Trilogy.

LBOCS · 11/04/2015 21:23

Outlander. And all 6 books which follow it...

Also, Pillars of the Earth plus sequel. And the other trilogy by Ken Follett - about the wars? Something centuries, I think.

Justin something or other, the Passage. And there's a sequel too.

AnnaBegins · 11/04/2015 21:16

Thirding The Goldfinch, I've not finished it yet and I'm a very fast reader.
