Mo Hayder

Just finished Wolf by Mo Hayder and once again am completely freaked out by the story. I like/dislike The Walking Man and he just makes me think about things I rather wouldn't. I mean, the way he applied his life to searching.

However, I remember reading Tokyo and having to put the book out of my eyeline because it was terrifying me. I still read the full book.

She is a right scarey woman and I look forward/tremble at her next book.

I hated "Birdman". I live horror films and books but absolutely despised that one. The fact that she describes the violent sexual torture of a kidnapped woman and implies that the woman is enjoying it/finding it a turn-on is totally abhorrent imo. I don't know how anyone can say they "love" her writing and I despise the fact that anyone who would describe in detail how a woman is abducted, tortured, raped but somewhere deep down enjoys this can cash in on such tripe.
Sorry.

Pig Island freaked the shit out of me, so dark and twisted and the images...shudder. Tokyo was also very haunting

the Jack series are a bit easier to stomach, and do mellow over time

but I dont think I could read Pig Island again

Love mo hayder. Stuart Macbride is good, Katy Reichs, Linda Fairstein, Patricia Cornwall, Jeffrey deaver, patrick kellermsn.

snozzlemaid · 11/02/2015 19:34

I've read all of hers. I love the Jack Caffrey and walking man books. They're so brilliantly disturbing.
Always get excited when I hear she has a new book coming out.
I got Poppet the Christmas before last and I remember lying in bed alone reading it and getting completely spooked by it. Brilliant.

madasamarchhare · 06/02/2015 16:03

You need to try the treatment by mo hayder. Another fab book. This and bird man were excellent but I couldn't get into pig island or Tokyo.

cdtaylornats · 06/02/2015 13:05

I've read both Pig Island and Wolf and loved them both.

YoullLikeItNotaLot · 05/02/2015 22:22

I liked Pig Island!

Re imagining someone sat at their desk thinking up the plots...I remember seeing Minette Walters' home on some programme. It was all tasteful and cosy and she looked like a primary school headteacher - not sure what I was expecting but not that from the woman who put really unsettling, unshakeable images into my head.

buddhasbelly · 05/02/2015 22:15

oh I like val mcdermid. I saw that Stuart Macbride has a new book out if anyone is a fan of his stuff?

Alchemist · 05/02/2015 22:15

Pig Island and Birdman are both foul but I read them. I may avoid in the future.

As a bit of light relief I am now reading The Rosie Project. I will sleep easier tonight :).

Oh, Val McDermid is v good.

I can (and have) read and reread her books several times.

marinerkk · 05/02/2015 22:08

Just finished birdman. It was quite scary and after seeing that the next in the series has children in it I won't risk it and will leave her books there I think. Always loved val mcdermid wire in the blood books but guess they are maybe a bit old now.

Grokette · 05/02/2015 22:02

Pig Island was foul.

Weirdly, Tokyo is one of the fake books on all the bookshelves at my local Ikea. I always think that's really weird whenever I go there.

Bolshybookworm · 05/02/2015 21:58

Ooh, might have to try Denise mina- I loved the televised version of field of blood!

JoyceDivision · 05/02/2015 21:56

I read a john connelly book... was it the book of lost things... loved it!

Am looking forward to house of leaves!

I am the silly mare who watches werewolf in london, nightmare on elm street (the first one, love it!)... then has to wait for dh to get in if he is out because I am too scared to get off the sofa! Blush

Bolshybookworm · 05/02/2015 21:56

I love Mo Hayder books too, they have mellowed considerably and I like jack caffrey and the walking man.

I've been enjoying Belinda Bauers books- crime novels set around a small village on Dartmoor. Nowhere near as gruesome as mo Hayder, but I like the characters involved. Also looking for new crime author recommendations!

buddhasbelly · 05/02/2015 21:54

just had a look at house of leaves joyce and am now going to have a look at those authors pacific thanks!

PacificDogwood · 05/02/2015 21:48

Good crime stuff?
Try Denise Mina - love her stuff.

Creepy?
Try John Connolly - quite scary, but more from a religious/spiritual angle.

JoyceDivision · 05/02/2015 21:44

Buddhasbelly, not a crime fan.. it was my SIL who was adamant I would love her stuff!

I love a bit of horror( I have ordered the house of leaves from the library on mumsnet recommendation of a terrifying book!)

i don't really like crime fiction or tv stuff... it was the creepy angle I think my SIL was thinking of but it was just nasty when I read it.

She must be loaded and trawls easy shock tactic subjects for her stuff when it is so OTT it's just awful.

PacificDogwood · 05/02/2015 21:43

Oh yes, it was the usual gory drawn-out description of violence, suffering and death. Obviously Hmm

buddhasbelly · 05/02/2015 21:41

I think I'll avoid Pig Island then!

nooyearnooname · 05/02/2015 21:40

Pig Island was HORRID!!

PacificDogwood · 05/02/2015 21:39

Yes, I think it's a stand-alone.
And it has a rather far-fetched twist. I am more than happy to suspend my disbelief in the interest of a good story, but was a bit Hmm….

nooyearnooname · 05/02/2015 21:39

buddha have you read any SJ Bolton? Some of the earlier ones are proper shiver up the spine stuff

buddhasbelly · 05/02/2015 21:38

pacific I haven't read Pig Island, is that one of hers that is a stand alone and not part of the Jack Caffery series? by the sounds of things it's quite disturbing!

buddhasbelly · 05/02/2015 21:37

thanks noo hmm I preferred the earlier ones to when Caffery moved so may have the same response to Poppet as you.

Joyce are you a crime fiction fan? If so wouldn't mind a few recommendations that perhaps dont have quite the shock scenes of Mo Hayder but still crime (yes I may struggle to go to sleep after reading some of her things) sorry for the hijack OP!
