Must say I do like audible.

I listen on the long commute to work and really grateful for it.

But I know have a stack of 8 to go and lots of credits to spend.

If you cancel do you loose all your books?

Sorry - you said his name. I really need to go to sleep! Grin
Thanks!

tobee · 24/12/2014 20:45

Peter Firth.

antimatter · 24/12/2014 19:53

tobee - which narrator was reading yours?
I can see there are 2 versions in Audible - one read byPat Barker and the other by Peter Firth

antimatter · 24/12/2014 19:50

I finished The Snow Child and now feel liek looking for books about Alaska. I enjoyed it a lot.
However for the time being - The Crimson Petal and the White, I like the narrator and feel I am going to enjoy the whole 42 hours of it Smile

I love Audible. Use it to help through boring housework mostly. I've bought it as a gift membership for my sister this Christmas. So true about the narrator. My dh and I had to return The Longest Day because the reader sounded like a robot. Maybe he was.

My favourite has been Peter Firth reading Pat Barker's "Regeneration" Trilogy. I realised I'd fallen in love with main character, which was unfortunate since he was dead, part fictionalised and gay.

I just calculated that through buying offers etc I have nearly 200 hours to listen to on audible! That may take nearly 3 months if I am going to finish all of them.
No more buying unless some offer of 3 for 2 or 2 for 1 of books I am definitely interested in!
I finished this week We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves
Last week - Apple tree yard - beautifully read!
I am currently listening to A man called Ove as recommended by DuchessofMalfi and enjoying it too - so far very uplifting story

DuchessofMalfi · 07/12/2014 13:09

Audible has just started another of their 2 for 1 sales, from today until next Sunday. Just used my credit having, for the first time, found two books I actually wanted in their sale :) - A Man Called Ove by Frederik Backman (liked the sample, good narrator) and Lancaster & York: The Wars of the Roses by Alison Weir (like her history books).

DuchessofMalfi · 04/12/2014 04:28

I'm reading Foxglove Summer atm and enjoying it so far. Really like Ben Aaronovitch's dry humour. Did listen to a sample of the narration on Audible before my library book turned up and they chose well for their narrator. Was very tempted to use my credit on that if library took too long Smile

FiveHoursSleep · 03/12/2014 22:01

Am managing to live without Simon Serrailler in my future and am now listening to the 5th London Rivers book: Foxglove Summer.
I read the first 4 books, but this would be a great series for anyone who likes crime with a bit of magic.

Luna I loved quirkiness of 1Q84.
Once I get into a book I don't want it to end.

I am still going to persevere with Luminaries Grin

antimatter · 03/12/2014 21:44

I got 10 pounds credit for buying 2 biographies for 1 credit.
On Friday during Black Friday I spent another 12.50 and got 6 books which were on sale (there were lots of others too) including We are completely besides ourselves, Apple tree yard - those I meant to read for sometime.

In short - once you are used to Audible's offers and don't spend every credit straight away you can get good offers. Also people can buy you gift vouchers and that comes handy too.

I wonder if they'll all come down in price the more popular it becomes, in a year or so.

I'll have another look but slightly concerned as I already have a wicked kindle habitWink

DuchessofMalfi · 03/12/2014 16:52

But they often have sales, where books are 75% off or 2 for 1 etc. Worth checking out the website. There are flash sales for 24 hours.

DuchessofMalfi · 03/12/2014 16:39

When you look at the price of some of the audio books, £7.99 is a good price for a monthly subscription. Average price is around £12 to £20 for an audio book otherwise.

Have you checked if your library's website does audio book loans? I borrow as well as buy from Audible.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/12/2014 15:04

So is it 7.99'permmonthnand for that you get just one book? That seems a bit pricey imo or am I missing something. I'd love to listen to stories when walking so it definitely interested.

Lunaballoon · 27/11/2014 18:11

I loved Murakami's Wind up Bird Chronicle, which I read, but I didn't enjoy 1Q84, I'm afraid. I had very high expectations at the start. But it's sooo long (I got the unabridged version!) and the story is frankly bizarre in places. Very cool female lead character though!

DuchessofMalfi · 27/11/2014 17:54

There's a code in the Radio Times for next week to get this for free Six Degrees of Assassination. I started listening to it today and it's not bad all. Helped while away a couple of hours long walk this morning :)

DuchessofMalfi · 27/11/2014 06:35

Five - how about something by David Sedaris? I love his books and they always cheer me up.

DuchessofMalfi · 27/11/2014 06:32

I finished Colorless Tsukuru yesterday. Whilst I liked the story I thought the narration was very flat and dull. He sounded bored. I returned it for a refund and told Audible that was the reason.

FiveHoursSleep · 26/11/2014 21:28

I am now onto the last Simon Serrailer book and am anticipating a book (series?) hangover. :(
What can I listen to that will cheer me up?

staplemind · 25/11/2014 06:19

Thinking about it 1Q84 is flattish at points but there are 3 narrators - so that I think made difference.
Amazing that 1Q84 was translated by 2 different people! I am really impressed that there's consistency in how the book "feels" regardless of that through t's entirety.

Rebecca was read by late Mary Wesley. I was thinking of trying one of other books she narrated - maybe some of Jane Austin I haven't read. I think voice and dramatisation by the reading author indeed makes big difference.

I also enjoyed The Goldfinch.
I have few more waiting for me but for instance - started The Luminaries few times and my brain just switches itself off! Teen I can't concentrate. I will give it another go but if I am unsuccessful when doing nothing but listening I will return it.

DuchessofMalfi · 25/11/2014 06:00

staple - I read Norwegian Wood last year and loved it. I did borrow an audio version of it from the library as well but didn't like the American narrator's voice. There may be a better version available from Audible though. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did Smile

Looking forward to 1Q84.

Rebecca is a wonderful story, isn't it? I love it. Not listened to an audio version though, so may add to the wish list.

Am thinking of telling Audible the quality of their recording of Colorless Tsukuru isn't up to standard. Might return for refund after all. The narrator just sounds bored, flat, no intonation.

staplemind · 24/11/2014 21:07

I meant I listened to both books by Murakami.

staplemind · 24/11/2014 21:05

DuchessofMalfi - try Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier if you don't know it

I preferred 1Q84 to Colorless Tsukuru Smile

I am going to try Norwegian Wood as well

DuchessofMalfi · 24/11/2014 13:42

I used this month's credit on Colorless Tsukuru and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami. I'm about a third of the way through and, whilst the story is great, the narration is very flat. I won't send it back, because I'm enjoying the story but it really could have been read a lot better than this.

staple - I listened to the sample of 1Q84 and really liked it. I was really torn between getting that and Colorless Tsukuru. In the end I decided to buy the kindle edition of 1Q84 instead.

Not sure what to get next month. So much choice. Maybe The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters.
