Must say I do like audible.

I listen on the long commute to work and really grateful for it.

But I know have a stack of 8 to go and lots of credits to spend.

If you cancel do you loose all your books?

Right. So this thread made me sign up for the 30 day trial today. Got The Girl on The Train. Will start tonight in bed. Have never listened to an audio book but love R4 dramas etc so should work. Also got the year's gift for DH bday next month as he flies a lot.

I have high hopes of it being life changing. Smile

Hakluyt · 19/02/2015 07:25

Just to warn you- I took them seriously about the no quibbles return- and now they have stopped me doing it. So be circumspect!

minifingers · 19/02/2015 07:18

Stoner is wonderful. :-)

antimatter · 17/02/2015 21:15

Maybe story was soo good it didn't matter for me? I rather liked it and I returned several books in the last 6 months when I couldn't get on with narrator. I listen to it whilst driving and when walking my dog. I still remember certain dialogs and where in the park I was...
I need another Murakami soon! I worry what is going to happen when I finish them all - would I listen to them again perhaps Grin Or read for a change!

DuchessofMalfi · 13/02/2015 20:53

What did you think of the narrator of Colorless Tsukuru, Antimatter?

I thought he did rather a poor job, and I returned it for a refund. He sounded utterly bored. Rather spoiled it for me, because the story itself was really good (as you'd expect from Murakami :))

AliceInHinterland · 13/02/2015 20:11

I have recently enjoyed:
Georgette Heyer - The Corinthian
Amy Poehler - Yes Please
The Song of Achilles
Silas Marner BBC adaptation

antimatter · 13/02/2015 13:15

I listened to Colouress, 1Q84 and the Norwegian woods - I liked all 3.
If you get 12 books subscription it works at 4.99/book I think. Ant that is really god value.

Andcake · 13/02/2015 13:00

I've worked out that my library does audiobooks not sure how it all works yet but will give it a go Grin
Also family have been asking me what I want for my birthday so and I have no idea so may ask for an audible gift subscription.
I'm one of these people who can never think of anything as a gift especially as I don't have time to read. I've been listening some of the ones on spotify this week where they have some bronte and lived Madame bovary but these were basically re reads and was aching for something modern. The last book I read was a murakami 'colourless' and haven't read many of his so v excited Smile

DuchessofMalfi · 12/02/2015 21:40

That should read day not say ...

DuchessofMalfi · 12/02/2015 21:40

And they have started doing a daily deal where a book is offered for one say at between £0.99 and £2.99. Worth checking daily or sign up to the email notifications.

antimatter · 12/02/2015 21:19

Andcake - try your local library for free audioboks as well - between offers on audible and the library you should be OK, some books are up to 30 hours long, others may be as little as 6 or 7.
THere are various offers on audible - for instance I got voucher for 6 books as a gift. If I buy 3 (the current offer), then I get 10 pounds voucher. There are sales on where for that amount you can get 2 good books.

You can at some point switch to one off yearly charge, get the all credit at once and use them for offers like this one.

There are also sales 2 books for 1 credit, or 3 for 2.

KatieScarlettreregged · 12/02/2015 20:52

Audible is the best thing ever.
I used to sleep really badly with brainchurn till I started listening to a book in bed an hour before going to sleep. Never since.
Wolf Hall and BUTB are my top favourites and have re listened to them many times.
Loved Apple Tree Yard, The Concubine, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, That Woman (Wallis Simpson bio), The Godfather, The Talented Mr Ripley and One of Your Own (Myra Hindley bio).
It's my absolute favourite thing to do. Candles, duvet and a good audiobook, what's not to like?

Andcake · 12/02/2015 20:38

Found this thread as I was about to start a similar thread saying is audible worth it. I have a commute where I never get to read but 1 credit a month seems v small - one book a month seems not enough!
Or should I just give it a go on there 30 day free trial!

CaptainTripps · 24/01/2015 21:54

My favourite readers

Mel Foster (try listening to House of Thunder) and Jeff Harding

The Stand is wonderful.
Try Mr Mercedes.

Both by SK

antimatter · 23/01/2015 21:16

I persevered with Luminaries and once I got my head round names of places and characters I am really enjoying it! I am 70% through.
Is often at around £3.7 - well worth of 28 hours of listening :)

DuchessofMalfi · 23/01/2015 05:32

So pleased you're enjoying them, Pier :)

I"m currently listening to H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald, which is also narrated by her. Enjoying it very much.

EATmum · 22/01/2015 23:56

Love audible. I like sewing and running and can listen along to both! I've listened to all the Serraliers and loved The Goldfinch and Apple Tree Yard too. Think that Robert Glenister is perfect for the Galbraith novels and actually enjoyed the audio book of Cuckoo's Calling too - great narrator. The narrator absolutely makes or breaks the book I think, and I've sent back a few that set my teeth on edge. You can listen to a sample first which helps. Also recommend podcasts which can be really interesting if you're not sure what you're after.

pierpressure · 22/01/2015 23:43

I know this is quite an old thread, but zombie yet?!
Just wanted to thank Duchess for the Simon Serailler recommendation. So enjoyed the first, and there are loads more to listen to

mimiasovitch · 07/01/2015 07:20

Don't let me put you off. I still managed all the books without killing anyone. He just does a poor job of wen in general, and a few (important) characters voices change over the series. Tyrion ends up welsh, Tywin as winston Churchill and Arya as an Irish wildling. I've heard worse, sadly.

antimatter · 05/01/2015 23:28

Shame that Thrones books have poor narrator. I was hoping to listen to them Sad

mimiasovitch · 05/01/2015 21:06

If you like fantasy I recommend The Name of the Wind, by Patrick rothfus. The narrator is so fabulous I looked out for more books that he'd narrated, just to listen to him. A bit of a difference from the dire work on the game of thrones books. God the guy on those did a terrible job.

DaisytheStrange · 03/01/2015 15:52

The Audible version of "The Goldfinch" is brilliant. The narrator is superb - the best I've heard so far.

HopeClearwater · 02/01/2015 01:05
