Do you have a book that you regularly reread or is your literary comfort blanket?

Yes to Jilly cooper. Now I have kindle ones so they won't fall apart!

Anything by Mary Stewart, gentle, well-written romances, but I love the Merlin ones too.

I'm with GinGirl - The Grand Sophy is my ultimate comfort read but nearly all of Georgette Heyer works. Other favourites are Venetia, Regency Buck, These Old Shades and The Talisman Ring. DH regularly has to promise to ride ventre a terre to my death bed Grin

I can supply quite a few children's books, amongst others.

Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Weirdstone of Brisingamen, Watership Down, My Family and Other Animals, Bridget Jones 2, Austen generally, Redwall.

GinGirl · 08/03/2014 20:43

Grand Sophy, have it on my Kindle and paperback. I read it at least once a year, my go-to comfort book. But most of Georgette Heyer works, just not as quickly.
Terry Pratchett, usually a Watch one.
3 Men in a Boat
PG Wodehouse

Have lots of my childhood favourites on my Kindle. Anne of Green Gables series, Emily of New Moon and lots of Rosemary Sutcliffe. All are brilliant for escaping into...

bringonyourwreckingball · 08/03/2014 20:42

Anne of green gables, and the rest of the series

Greydog · 08/03/2014 20:40

Any of the "what Katy did" books.
Most of Georgette Heyers, and Andrea Camilleri's "Montalbano" books, as there's so much in them that makes me laugh. Another one that I've read til it's held together will tape is "Mist over Pendle"

Anne of Green Gables.
The Outlander series (can't wait for the next one RockMummy!)
The Time Travellers Wife.

shouldnthavesaid · 08/03/2014 20:36

In terms of children's literature - I have a cardboard box under the bed full of children's books that I've hung on to. I have a lot of 'Mog' stories (Judith Kerr) that my grandparents gifted to me as a child. When my cat died about 4 weeks ago or so, I sat sobbing at 2am reading them.

There's also a lovely story, I think it's Enid Blyton, about two dolls that gp to catch a train together in to 'toy land' and buy their own wee house. I'm sure one was a fairy? I always loved that story but can't remember what it is!

Adult literature wise, my comforts are Jane Eyre and The Bell Jar (which sounds bizarre, but I heavily relate to it and find the ending very uplifting, I can feel Esther's depression fading as the novel finishes and it makes me feel hopeful, that things can and do get better).

chutneypig · 08/03/2014 20:36

I forgot Jilly Cooper. But thanks to this thread I've just gone and ordered four Georgette Heyer books for my kindle. Comfort ready to goSmile

SuburbanSpaceperson · 08/03/2014 20:33

A Place of My Own by Michael Pollan to calm me down. Sometimes just looking at the cover is enough to make me feel a little less agitated.

Welcome to Temptation by Jennifer Crusie if I need to be cheered up.

Ain't She Sweet by Susan Elizabeth Phillips for the man I would really like to fall in love with.

RockMummy · 08/03/2014 20:32

The Poldark series by Winston Graham and the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. Just love curling up with them especially if a bit down in the dumps.

ButterscotchClouds · 08/03/2014 20:29

Anything by Jilly Cooper.

Germgirl · 08/03/2014 20:27

The Malory Towers and St Clare's books. And Bill Bryson 'Notes from a Small Island'. I re read them all at least once a year, usually more often.

chutneypig · 08/03/2014 20:26
