Any recommendations? Need lots of books for hols. I want lit fiction eg I do not want Khaled Hossein, Harold Fry, JoJo Moyes etc etc (nothing wrong with them, but I don't want them).

I want Mantel/Mitchell/Houllebecq type stuff please and thank you.

"Three Men on a Bummel" the sequel to "three men in a boat" is free on Kindle. It's worth getting it for the dog incident alone.

Hully, I agree with you about Anne Tyler, but even her not-so-great is better than many writers' best.

TheRealFellatio · 28/06/2013 14:58

Three men.....the tent erecting scene...oh dear God. Have a cylinder of oxygen at the ready.

I HAVE GONE MAD

I have just found the free bit on kindle and ordered the complete works of Flaubert, Balzac etc etc etc for £1.32 each

Hully, I hope "Unfinished Desires" was one you ordered.

No one has yet mentioned Anne Tyler.

Shifting gears: the Scottish writers Robin Jenkins and Anne Donovan.

Oh I like Gail Godwin, I read her about 20 years ago, had quite forgot she existed. Will check all the latest recs out.

Fell, read The Singapore Grip by Farrell

I have had a look at those Scone and will give them a try-I buy second hand (hate my kindle) so hopefully not bankrupted by todays recommendations Smile

SconeRhymesWithGone · 28/06/2013 14:08

Southern but not gothic: Gail Godwin. Her latest is "Flora," but my favorite is "Father Melancholy's Daughter."

Love everything by Sedaris TheReal.

Also like 212 by Jana Tanowitz.
