My DH and friends giggle at me but I love her books. Chocolate, sofa snuggles and one of her books and I am a happy lady Smile
Am I the only one?

Plomino It was 'By the Pricking of my Thumbs' and there was no need to draft in Miss Marple either T&T managed perfectly well in the book.

Plomino · 17/06/2013 07:35

The one that made me incandescent with rage was the one that had Tommy and Tuppence in it , and they turned him into a complete tosser and her into a right old lush . WTAF ?
And now I can't think what it was called .

Am quite excited at the moment , our local auctioneer mentioned he was going out to a house to look at someone's Agatha Christie collection ... Hopefully they'll sell them locally and I can add to my stash !

DorisShutt · 17/06/2013 07:05

Oh lord the "adaptations" where there is plot fiddling... Murder at the Vicarage made me apoplectic!

Least last night's (A Carribean Mystery) was relatively straightforward; but seemed a bit dumbed down? Certainly a couple of the back stories seemed to be missing.

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2013 22:58

Joan Hickson for me is the definitive TV Marple.

I'm with you about Geraldine McEwan's Marple. I'm actually glad I can't get ITV where I live so I couldn't watch this evening.

Plomino · 16/06/2013 22:53

I love them all , but its the Miss Marples that are the ones I read over and over . And there was only one Miss Marple on TV , which was Joan Hickson . Julia Mackenzie is ok , but Geraldine Mcewan reduced me to paroxysms of fury , so much so that DH banned me from watching her in his presence because I would shout at the screen " particularly in the ones she wasn't even supposed to be in !

But then Agatha Christie herself liked Joan Hickson for the part , didn't she ?

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2013 22:52

Ooh, you'll enjoy The Murder of Roger Ackroyd!

1928 edition? You lucky thing!

mixedmamameansbusiness · 16/06/2013 22:45

I read quite a few when younger but can't really recall them, Murder in the Orient Express is my current favourite but am only up to The Murder if Roger Akcroyd (1928 edition that should arrive this week - excited beyond what is normal).

Taffeta · 16/06/2013 22:42

Read all the books over 20 years ago

Not a fan of any of the adaptations esp. It's not the same when you know whodunit

aPseudonymToFoolHim · 16/06/2013 22:31

I love them. I have a memory like a sieve so I can re-read them as often as I like! HP and Miss M are fab! I don't like Tommy and Tuppence though.

I will ALWAYS sit down to watch one when they are on TV (today's The Man in the Brown Suit being prime example) no mattr HOW many times I've seen them before. Same with the wonderful Columbo

mixedmamameansbusiness · 16/06/2013 22:26

No. I am reading Hercule Poirot in order this year and am thoroughly enjoying finding old copies for pence with interesting cover art.

I read then in between other stuff or sometimes have a Poirot, other fiction and non fiction on the up. They are brilliant.

Thank you CatherineHMumsnent!

ariadneoliver · 16/06/2013 15:20

Nettie maybe there should be an Agatha fan club meet up on the island

CatherineHMumsnet · 16/06/2013 14:37

Hi - yes we'll move this into Books in a mo.

Engelsemama · 16/06/2013 13:24

I had an Agatha Christie phase when I was 14 (rural library so little choice - came right before my Danielle Steel pase Blush ).

Thanks for reminding me - now time to load up my kindle Smile

minsmum · 16/06/2013 13:23

I love Amelia Peabody too. I have a lot of those books on my kindle.

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2013 13:22

This is a lovely thread.

Is there any way it could be moved out of Chat into the Books section so all us Christie & mystery fans can keep dipping in & out to talk about the books (I think I'm right in thinking Chat topics disappear after a while?).

drudgewithagrudge · 16/06/2013 13:14

I am a great Miss Marple fan but only the Joan Hickson ones. They muck about with the plots in the latest versions.

I find it hard to be fond of Hercule Poirot even though I have to admit he is clever. Somehow he doesn't seem quite human.

What always puzzles me is why all the characters agree to gather in the drawing room at the end of lots of the stories. Surely the villain must know that all will be revealed.

HelgatheHairy · 16/06/2013 12:47

I just want to say that this thread is going to cost me a fortune in kindle downloads with the writers I've never heard of but now want to read all their books (Ngaio Marsh etc - have already worked my way through Dorothy L Sayer)

nettie · 16/06/2013 10:40

Forgot to say favourite character is Lucy Eyelesbarrow, and slight crush on HastingsBlush.

My dream holiday would be Burgh Island.

nettie · 16/06/2013 10:37

Another fan here. I also have copy of all her books, the Joan Hickson Miss Marple dvds, the Magaret Rutherford films, some of the Ustinov films, Murder on the Orient Express dvd, looking foward to getting boxset of the Poirots when they finish them, numerous audiobooks etc. etc.

Nothing more comforting than a hot bath, cup of tea and a good murder!

Looking foward to Marple tonight, has the added attraction of having the gorgeous Charles Mesure in it Smile.

Am reading a Flavia de Luce novel at the moment are very Christiesque(sp!).

Clawdy · 16/06/2013 10:28

Read them all, love most of them, except Tommy and Tuppence. Favourites are Evil Under the Sun,because it was the first I read, and The Hollow.

SlittySluttySlots · 16/06/2013 10:24

Helga & Morvah - i like Amelia too although haven't seen a new one in ages!

Someone up thread mentioned this but i do get comfort from murders set in this era, iykwim! You just know it will all work out Smile

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2013 00:33

I know, and Ngaio Marsh is even worse. It's quite shocking to our modern ears.

CadleCrap · 16/06/2013 00:32

I have spent the last year or so working my way through her collection.

I do have a slight chuckle at some of the (nowadays) non PC language used.

DramaAlpaca · 15/06/2013 23:54

Oh yes, the Man in the Brown Suit & the scary secretary!

I think my favourite non-Marple/Poirot was Death Comes As the End - I liked the Ancient Egyptian setting.

After I'd gone through all the Christies I read the Ngaio Marsh books. I think I have all of them as well.

I'm going to get hold of a few Amelia Peabody books, I've never heard of them until tonight so thanks for the recommendation.
