50 Book Challenge in 2013. Who's with me?

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 05/01/2013 16:58

Tidying up after Christmas it has come to my attention that I have nearly 100(!!) paperbacks in stacks down the side of my bed waiting to be read. BlushBlush
I am going to challenge myself to try and read at least 50 of them this year. That's nearly one a week so I am going to have to really apply myself and stop faffing around and doing other things when I could be enjoying a good book.
I wondered if anyone else would like to join me? We can post what we are reading and then post when we have finished each book and what's next.
I know I would love to hear what others are reading and enjoying (or not enjoying) so I can go out and buy more books in a few months time!
My first book of the year is President Down by Terence Strong about spies and terrorists which my dad lent me about a year ago! I'm only about 20 pages in, but so far so good.

I'm on a slow start to 2013 as reading Pride & Prejudice but definitely up for the challenge. I'll have to alternate with some quick reads as well.

  1. London by Edward Rutherfurd

Huge book, some parts of which I must admit to skimming - enjoyed parts of it as love London history but just couldn't keep up with all the genealogical strands and contrived stories. But that's my first book this year done and dusted.

SooFrustrated · 07/01/2013 01:09

Oh count me in please. I seem to have lost my way last year and almost stopped reading completely.

Got a kindle for Christmas though and have bought a few books. So far I've just read Wonder by RJ Palacio, not a long story, but very uplifting.

Am reading Revenge of a Middle Aged Women, it's a bit depressing and I'm not sure why I thought it would be any good, but I'll get it finished before I move on.

Really want to read Pride & Prejudice this year.

coffeeandcream · 07/01/2013 00:36

Hi, I'd love to join too, although with a three week old baby, I might only manage two books a month, but we'll see!

Books on my "to read" list:
The girl who played with fire
The girl who kicked the hornets nest
The red queen - phillippa Gregory
The virgins lover - phillippa Gregory
His dark materials trilogy - Pullman
A red country - joe Abercrombie
The hunger games

I also want to read more classics which are great kindle freebies! So far I've downloaded:
Sons and lovers
Treasure island
Sense and sensibility
Jane eyre

BTW, I do know how to capitalise and puntuate, but CBA as currently feeding DS and getting used to my iPhone!

WednesdayNext · 06/01/2013 21:50

I'd love to join in, if that's ok? My reading got very off track following some MH problems after the birth off my DS. I've not been able to concentrate on reading but not stopped buying books, so have 25 books to read on the shelf in my room, more in the spare room and at least the same again on my kindle.

My first book of the year (started on new year's eve if that counts?) was Hilary Jordan's "When She Woke". Highly recommended. I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in three sittings as I couldn't put it down!

Just about to start Kate Furnivall's "The Jewel Of St Petersburg". I've read some of her books before, so looking forward to this one.

Very interested in the Android Karenina book. I'll have to add that to my list!

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 06/01/2013 21:25

How many Georgette Heyer am I allowed?

I'm in for 30 books. Sorry, new baby and now back to work. Also need to learn italian.

BsshBossh · 06/01/2013 21:18

I might have to only read books of less than 200 pages to get to 50 Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/01/2013 20:12

I remembered that the other one I've read so far this year was Pratchett's 'Dodger' - I was disappointed with it. So, that's five so far since January the first but I'm almost bookless again now. :(

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 06/01/2013 20:08

Hurrah Festive! One down, forty-nine to go!

I'm in!

Though I might have to stop reading mahoosive sci-fi/fantasy books if I want to manage a book a week. Grin

Festivedidi · 06/01/2013 20:05

I've just started the snow child too. I finished Magic Burns while dd2 was in the bath.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 06/01/2013 19:57

I have decided not to bother struggling on with books I don't enjoy this year. Reading in my leisure time should not be a chore. If I get to page 50 and I'm still not enjoying myself, I resolve to bin it off and move onto the next one.

OP posts:
PeppaPrig · 06/01/2013 19:54

I'm starting with the Snow Child (charger found Grin).
How do I join the good reads group? I looked on Facebook, but there were hundreds of groups with that name.

Worksitoutwithapencil · 06/01/2013 18:37

I'm in too. I read 49 books last year but that included 5 months commuting on the train for 2hrs a day, might be more difficult to do now I drive to work.

Currently reading What on Earth Happened by Christopher Lloyd but I am finding it a bit boring and so am not reading very often. Might have to give up and move on to something else.

My New Years resolution is that I can only buy 1 new book when I have read 10books that I already own as my 'to read' pile is getting out of control

BsshBossh · 06/01/2013 17:01

Okay, I'm in. When I commuted to work I got through two books a week but now I work from home I get through a book a month! I blame MN, to be very honest, for eating into my free evenings once DD is in bed. So in order to read more, I need to reduce my MN time.

I started Confessions Of A Wallflower on 1st January. So far it's funny, sweet and very endearing.

CandyLoo · 06/01/2013 14:17

Count me in!
I've posted a few threads recently about when we find the time to read, how many books you've read in 2012 etc., so this thread is perfect for me!
I'd originally set myself the target of 2 books a month, so must try harder to reach 50!
I started a book group six months ago with mums from school, and seem to only have read book group books whilst I've got a pile of my own at home which I'd love to get through.
I've just finished 'State of Wonder' by Ann Patchett which I started early December (book group) so am starting from Book 1 today - 'Rose Petal Beach' by Dorothy Koomson (book group again).
I'll let you know how I get on!

PeppaPrig · 06/01/2013 11:52

I need to find my kindle charger! Bought some books in the kindle sale, but the battery is flat...

overflowingmum · 06/01/2013 11:51

me!!
I had already said I was going to try to read 52 books this year - quite a challenge for me!! Might make it to 50 if I try really hard....trouble is I also want to do more gardening, dog training and baking and photography.....not to mention working almost full time and having 6 DC LOL So many hobbies....so little time!
BUT I will go for it.... Have just joined goodreads so will go and look for the group( still figuring out how it works!! Blush)
Have so far read:
"The Snow Child" and "My Sister Lives on the Mantle Piece" since Jan1st...
Now reading The Bell Jar....trying to get into it...Hmm

MegBusset · 06/01/2013 08:20

I'll give it a go :) Would love to read more instead of vegging in front of Celeb BB and Mumsnet mindless rubbish.

Currently reading 'Edge of the Orison' by Iain Sinclair.

MirandaWest · 06/01/2013 08:07

I've already decided I want to read more - used to read a lot but this past year I have been doing too much mumsnet and too many other things. 50 books in the year sounds acheivable :)

MercuryRising · 06/01/2013 07:54

Im in! I love reading but don't make enough time for it instead I end up watching mindless drivel on the TV. I'm not sure if I will manage 50, but at least this thread will encourage me to make time to read. Im reading The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton at the moment and quite enjoying it.

DuchessofMalfi · 06/01/2013 07:24

Festive yes everyone is welcome. Juneybean started the group last year and it's been growing steadily. We have our own discussion threads and group reads. We're currently reading The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.

The more people who join, the better :)

SkyBean · 06/01/2013 04:10

I'm in! Hello...this is also my first delurking post on mumsnet...

I can do a book a week based on around half an hour each way on tube on weekday commutes...

I too have a tottering pile of to be reads...that is now an official health hazard....plus mini tottering stacks around and under the bed (and double stacking on shelves). Oh dear.

Southeastdweller · 05/01/2013 23:40

I'm also in. I have a stack of books at home and on my Kindle to get through. I think I read about 20 last year - I faff around doing other things which slows me down. I also don't like really long books - 400 pages or more. The reviews for the latest John Lanchester book were all great but having picked it up today the brick size is putting me off.

I'm now on I Feel Bad About My Neck, by Nora Ephron. Very funny and thought-provoking. Love her writing and it's quite short too. May start the latest Zadie Smith book after that one.

PeppaPrig · 05/01/2013 23:32

I'm in, and will decide what to read tomorrow.
