My friend bought it for me 2 days ago, I stopped reading 'A fine balance' for this crap. It has me cringing for the shite plot, bad repetition......its laughable really is. My friend is reading it as well, enjoying it, all on fb her friends are saying how great it is and i don't want to appear rude :(

How many times can this 'inner Goddess' CRAP be carted out, and the sex scenes are so rubbish, characters flimsy and annoying. I can't read the rest.....do they snuff it, hope so.

50 shades parody in Private Eye this week. Genius... They don't do online, but I type my favourite bit.

"When I wake, Mr Grey is at the piano, completeLy lost in the melody he is playing. His expression is sad and forlorn, like the music. His playing is stunning. He is able to use both hands at once.

'That was a beautiful piece,' I say. 'Bach?'
'Chopin. Prelude Opus twenty-eight, number four. In E minor, if you're interested,' he murmurs. 'Perhaps best known for his nocturnes, Frederic Chopin is considered on e of the great masters of Romantic music...'
When I wake, Mr Grey is still at the piano.
'born in the village of Zelazowa Wola, in the Duchy of Warsaw, the young Frederic was soon to become a renowned child prodigy..' he continues. It all spurts out of him like a waterfall. He tweaks the stem of his champagne flute with his expert hand and looks at it through his narrowed eyes. 'Bollinger Grande annee Rose 1999, an excellent vintage,' he sighs.

How long can he keep going like this? No man before has ever bored me so stiff, so solid, his every shaft of verbiage thudding into me like a truncheon.

Earlier, the Eye also nails the product placement.

'I gaze into his $75,000 Bulgari mirror bought from Macy's exclusive department store in Manhattan, New York'.

Cruelly catches how naive it actually sounds... and how wrong about the US. Macy's is of course the home of the middle classes... kind of a US John Lewis.

Don't get me wrong, but the book is itself so snobby, so very far from unassuming in its claims, that I think it deserves some pummeling on these grounds. On the plus side, perhaps now James will be able to visit those designer stores to which she seems something of a stranger.

That was a great review - it made me giggle over the women saying "Oh Christian". I thought he was a lot like the psychopath in American Psycho. And the contract left me cold. It's just wrong.

But I've now discovered the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I can justify the arrogance and aggression of Wrath.....far far superior character in comparison.

50 Shades is so badly written....and the "oh my" every time silly cow Ana discovered the slightest feeling in her inner goddess just did my head in. And the lip biting. I really am ata loss why so many women have fallen for this rubbish. Have they never read a decent sex scene in literature? Or even decent fan fic. It's written like poor fan fic.

Have to say I'll be very disappointed in Henry Cavill (saw on the Christian Grey fan page on fb he's the top choice) if he DOES take the role, but am amused by the press stories they may have to take out the sex to make a "good movie".

Ok, I've just borrowed all 3 and I'm going to start tonight. I have very poor staying power with badly written books, so I'm not hopeful. I like smut though, so that might help Smile

Smurfy1 · 12/07/2012 17:01

Atleast i'm not the only 1 who started off thinking book 1 was shite UNTIL chapter 7 then OMG 6 chapters of crap then wow I had to check it was the same book, book 2 is alot better I have to say, much more story starting book 3 tonight

shrinkingnora · 12/07/2012 11:35

I think you mean like Chris tyun? which is how I would say it and is still 3 syllables! Not chris chun though. I don't say Chris teee annnn. That would be odd Grin Anyway it is a horrid name and the book is shite. But a shite writer basing their shite book on a shite book will indeed give you shite book squared. Or cubed. Or something. 50 shades of shite nonetheless.

sieglinde · 12/07/2012 11:19

Oh well, what do I know? To me CHRIS-ti-an sounds poncy Grin and a bit weird. I don't like the name, in truth.

only4tonight · 12/07/2012 08:21

I say Chris-ti-an and my background is distinctly working class. Still a crap book though!

sieglinde · 12/07/2012 08:04

Nobody says CHRIS - TI - AN except hammy actors playing Shylock! It's Chris-shun. It just is. And the character has green eyes in the fic, of which as much is made as the grey eyes in the book. Nothing like Control + H. It's your friend. Grin. The sex in the fic is mostly vanilla, btw. Lots of naughty talk, but not much actual BDSM. I could name six raunchier fics, and sixty raunchier erotica publications.

Galaxymum · 10/07/2012 21:21

Bonnie -"Is it a book for people that don't normally read or is it earth shatteringly wonderful?"

I think it appeals to women who wouldn't normally read...... possibly in years past maybe they'd have read Mills and Boon! But I don't think those who find it wonderful can have read much. It's so badly written, badly edited and really quite tame. The sex scenes are so repetitive and more a tick box of fantasies rather than IMHO any real imagination.

Binfullofsiliconelimbsonthe45 · 10/07/2012 21:13

I think for some folks the sex scenes may be out of the ordinary. Particularly some of the uptight beggars I work with who are commenting to come across as "racy" or "shocking".

I think a whole bunch of other folks are reading it to "fit in" on the Northern Line each morning. They should try American Psycho or Imperial Bedrooms.

The funniest FB comment I saw was an old work colleague who was finishing the book just to see if Ana finally took it up the bum to say thank you for her laptop.

My comment on visiting the town of Salo and it thankfully being nothing like the film was met with a sea of blank faces. Perhaps try FB commenting in retaliation on how tame you found the Marquis De Sade books!

I sincerely hope that Brett Easton Ellis does write the film script. Then it'll become the dirty effed up story that it should be, as long as they don't soften his version for general consumption.

BonnieBumble · 10/07/2012 20:59

Do it Nora Grin

shrinkingnora · 10/07/2012 20:55

I keep wanting to comment on those posts:

Doris: has just read fifty shades of shite and looooveeddd it ;)

Nora: Is your right hand a bit knackered?

BonnieBumble · 10/07/2012 20:52

The thing that annoys me about 50 shades of Grey is everyone posting on FB about how fab it is but I don't see them post about other books that they are reading. Is it a book for people that don't normally read or is it earth shatteringly wonderful?

Someone please enlighten me because I can't be arsed to read it myself. If it's just about the sex well meh is all I have to say on that. They obviously aren't getting enough.

Binfullofsiliconelimbsonthe45 · 10/07/2012 20:16

Didn't do it for me.

Not even a twitch down "there".

Big turn off was the unashamedly heavy sponsorship on every other bloody page!

Twinings (will they bring out a new flavour - "50 shades of Earl Grey")
Apple - iPod for his eclectic music tastes, MacBook for emailing sexy thoughts
Blackberry - the chosen phone for modern day stalking
Converse - (perhaps a new shade of shoe, "bum fist brown)
Audi - in deflowered red

...I'm just surprised they didn't add:

Holy Crap! It had to be Mr Sheen Mrs Jones used to achieve that divine citrus smell and polished gleam in the "playroom",

At the point of entry, she recognised with relief the familiar sound of tearing foil of the great quality prophylactic - thank goodness for Trojans she sighed...

When he pulled out her favourite choice of ultimate discreet protection, he commented positively on how her Tampax had grown widthways and lengthways for added security on heavier days.

Smacking her lips on his bobbing manhood, she decided that sucking his impressive length was almost as delightful as her preferred choice of a Walls orange Calippo.

....etc....

Woke my husband up laughing out loud at the sex scenes. We then read/acted out the speaking parts aloud in accents for something to do on the balcony on holiday.

JoJo321 · 10/07/2012 19:24

This book is really crap! Obvs, once you start to read you have to continue and read all three books, but I would say, if you haven't yet started: don't bother!! The writing is that of a twelve year old, really badly written, super repetitive and lacking in a vocuabulary of more that approximately seven words...."ah, groaned Ana",...."oh my, gasped Ana" etc etc. IMHO if you want a book with a good bit of erotica then I would heartily recommend Walter Moseley, "The Killing of Johnny Fry". Much better story, fully rounded characters and written by a grown up for grown ups rather than pre-pubescent twilight fans.

Galaxymum · 10/07/2012 11:17

I ended up skimming it and throwing it across the room! I can't believe this is the AU fanfic that went viral and won all these women over. The writing is so poor and the sex scenes are not really that imaginative. I came to the conclusion the women who think it's such an exciting read really need to have a look at some fanfic on the net!

I found the character of Ana so annoying. She is such a drip. Honestly I wanted Christian to lose control and murder her. She annoys me so much. And I feel she really was just prostituting herself for the big presents and helicopter rides. It appalled me. It appals me that people I know think it's wonderful. What happened to feminism and equality?

shrinkingnora · 10/07/2012 11:11

chris - tee - un

sieglinde · 10/07/2012 11:10

No it isn't. Chris-shun.

shrinkingnora · 10/07/2012 11:08

Christian is 3 syllables.

sieglinde · 10/07/2012 11:04

BigBoPeep, because the fanfic is what is called an AU fanfic, as most Twilight fics are, in which the Twi characters are not paranormal vampires etc but ordinary people... but called Bella, Edward, Jacob etc. The original fanfic is apparently almost exactly like the published 50 Shades (of which I have read only the Kindle sample). It's noticeable that Ed-ward is the same no of syllables as Chris-Tian, and ditto Bell-la and An-a. It's also noticeable that a biiig feature of Twilight is the wealth of the Cullens.

Windandsand · 10/07/2012 07:54

So glad did not actually pay money for this book! Its very badly written- and is so dragged out. If you read it for the erotica you will be sadly disappointed and it's badly written enought to be painful. The pages of guff about sexual tension- its not even well written guff:) Have stopped reading it as I just don't like all the 'southern gal' oh mys. Total tosh:) plus mr grey and her sound like unlikely choices for an amazing shag.

saladsandwich · 10/07/2012 00:54

i started reading it and thought twilight rip off straight away, its the way the book is written, carried on reading, felt abit uneasy about all the control stuff, i noticed another error in the story like the 2 jacket one but can't remember what it was now.

its just utter shite though, the sex scenes are shit, he touches her she orgasms, he rips foil, holy shit, not again another orgasm i'm sure she says "he stills" wtf does that mean? does she mean spills lol.

i expected alot more graphic detail way people ae carrying on. its ridiculous, a friend of mine as a facebook profile "sit still and always obey grey" shudderrrrr lol
