A Cold Season by Alison Littlewood.
Disclaimer...I bought it in Smith's on a buy one get one half price, and grabbed it as the cover looked good.
It's about a mother and son marooned in a small Lancashire village with unfriendly locals...a bit Wicker Man-ish. And of course there are witch/devil undertones.
It is utter tripe.
It is now in the charity shop for some poor sod to buy.

Kate Mosse = awful.

The House At Riverton = really awful.

Heart Of Darkness = really, really awful.

Ian McEwan = overwritten self conscious twaddle as far as I'm concerned but Cote told me off for criticising him the other day!

RedBlanket · 13/04/2012 19:30

I've only just started 'Room' after I read on here it was good. Not so sure now.
I've just finished House Rules by Jodie Picoult. If they had just asked him if he did it, there would be no need for the second half of the book.

worzelswife · 13/04/2012 19:29

Sepulchre by Kate Moss is about 10 times worse than Labyrinth too. Quite dreadful.

Ratbagcatbag · 13/04/2012 19:29

Shit I love Twilight (read at least 7 times), confessions of a shopaholic and all the rest, Likes Cecilia Ahern PS I love you, can live with Kate Moss Books. Blush

The Cauldron, by Colin Forbes. In the first twenty pages or so the two lead baddies have a conversation where they explain the back story to each other at some length using clunky dialogue such as "As you know, your mother-in-law, Mrs Thompson, has [blah blah blah]". That's basically a direct quote. Then Baddy No 1 gives Baddy No 2 a sheet of paper with their evil plan on it and tells him to shred it because it's so secret and mustn't fall into the wrong hands, but once Baddy No 1 has left the room Baddy No 2 just crumples it up and throws it into yhe wastepaper bin. That evening the goodies (sadly not The Goodies, which would at least be diverting) raid the baddies' heavily fortified lair but are beaten off. As they flee the building, one of the goodies just has time to grab a crumpled sheet of paper from the top of the nearest wastepaper bin...

The worse I've ever read is a book called 'Hoping for Hope.' Someone gave it to and so I felt I had to read it; it was horrendous.

mosschops30 · 13/04/2012 19:28

The Slap was awful but i finished it.

India Knight 'the dirty bits for girls' was by far the worst book ive ever opened, after the intro i gave up, it was painful, how anyone can find her chosen passages erotic, sexy, dirty or otherwise is beyond me.
The Shops wasnt much better, if anyone wants them for postage please let me know

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 13/04/2012 19:27

I was furious when I opened Riddley Walker, and found it wasn't written in 'proper' English.

I didn't even try to read it - I'd looked forward to it and was bitterly disappointed! I just couldn't make myself bother with it!

AgentProvocateur · 13/04/2012 19:22

Ambivalent about The Slap and Chesil Beach, but I third (or is it fourth?) Labyrinth by Kate Mosse.

1950sHousewife · 13/04/2012 19:22

Chesil Beach- aaaaaaargh!
ANY Kate Mosse - aaaaargh (and people keep farking giving me the hardbacks for Xmas)
The CHildren's Book - blaaaaah!

God I hate lots of books.

1950sHousewife · 13/04/2012 19:20

Oh my, Digital Fortress really was wank Dilys.

I tried to struggle through 'One thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet' by David Mitchell.
It felt more like two thousand autumns.

Pd James is unreadable, true fact. I know because both my parents tried to read something of hers once and gave up within a chapter. They never did that. I suspect it was the only book that either of them didn't finish.

BelleDameSansMerci · 13/04/2012 19:16

How about reading more than one book by Jodi "I've got a formula and I'm sticking to it" Piccoult?

BelleDameSansMerci · 13/04/2012 19:15

"Darcy Mysteries" Shock - please tell me this is a joke? The PD James travesty was bad enough.

Jux · 13/04/2012 19:12

Christopher Unborn, by someone whose name I can't remember. I still shudder when I think of it. Luckily, I wasn't scarred for life as I gave up within 100 pages. I was the first book I didn't finish as an adult(still find it hard not to finish a book though, even when it was Dan Brown, Dean Coontz or the ghastly Hislop woman!).

notactuallyme · 13/04/2012 18:49

the playgroup - oh my god what a load of drivel written as if the author had never had any kind of human interaction in her life.

HerrenatheHHHarridan · 13/04/2012 18:43

I saw Girl with a dragon tattoo the other day and thought it was quite good - is the book utter drivel then?

I hated 'On the Beach' by Nevil Shute - SOOO dull. As is 'Barnaby Rudge' by Dickens - kept on with that one out of sheer bloody-mindedness! No reward though, sadly :(

Anyone ever read any of the 'Darcy mysteries'? Elizabeth and Mr Darcy investigate crimes... alright, embarrassed now Blush

webwiz · 13/04/2012 18:42

BelleDameSansMerci you just brought back bad memories about that lemon cake one - didn't her brother turn into a chair or something Hmm

"Tony and Susan" was a free ebook on my kindle, it certainly taught me to be more discerning.

bucketbetty · 13/04/2012 18:41

The slap was a load of olde shite but the great pretender is by far the worst book I have ever picked up.

junounderstated · 13/04/2012 18:35

I have to admit, love the "girl with a dragon tattoo" trilogy and didn't physically vomit at Pemberly.

DameHermione · 13/04/2012 18:32

i can't remember most of the crap books i have read. i have blocked them from my mind. life is too too short to keep ploughing through pages of shite.

Robinson Crusoe is memorably unreadable shite though.

mumatron · 13/04/2012 18:31

The girl with the dragon tattoo is the actual worst book ever written. True fact.

Closely followed by digital fortress.
