Posted this in Book of the month by mistake earlier today.

With just 35 days left of the year, I've been reflecting over the books I've read in 2011. The discovery of C.J. Sansom and Kate Atkinson made 2011 for me. I'm saving Dark Fire for my flight to the UK next month. I also enjoyed Room, Shanghai Girls, Crimson China and The Long Song.

What was your book of 2011?

Room was definitely my fave book of the year too, I also love Jodi picoult

coni336 · 01/02/2012 08:09

Room by Emma Donoghue, i absolutely loved this book!

BenderBendingRodriguez · 20/01/2012 23:03

Obviously none of those were first published last year, but you know what I mean.

BenderBendingRodriguez · 20/01/2012 23:03

Jonathan Coe - What A Carve Up!
Rupert Thomson - The Five Gates Of Hell
Charles Dickens - Our Mutual Friend (never read any Dickens before, was surprised by how funny, contemporary and moving it was)

In Search of Adam, by Caroline Smailes.

This book was one of those that really affected me. Absolutely brilliantly written, but a difficult subject matter to read. It really got me thinking, and appreciating my life.

halo47 · 11/01/2012 08:41

It has to be Afterwards by r lupton, followed by when god was a rabbit and room.

Cremolafoam · 10/01/2012 23:55

Jo nesbo - the leopard was epic
Ã…sa larsson- all but especially The Black Path really really good
Lionel shriver- so much for all that- joyous writing on difficult subject
Maggie o'F - read Hand but can't even remember it.
Read all The Camilla Läckbergs
last year but dodgy translations were a let down and ended up feeling erika and Patrik were a bit too smug

Toiling thru Liza Marklund series now Hmm

Also getting into Cara Black Smile

fedupofnamechanging · 06/01/2012 21:07

World War Z - Max Brooks. Can't recommend it highly enough

highlandcoo · 05/01/2012 18:35

Bel Canto by Ann Patchett.

I went to see her at Hay-on-Wye; she was such an intelligent and humorous speaker and writes beautifully too. Really recommend her as an author

Selky · 04/01/2012 08:48

Actually that should be:

As Good as Dead - Mark Billingham

Selky · 04/01/2012 08:47

The Secrets of Pain - Phil Rickman
As Good as Pain - Mark Billingham

quirrelquarrel · 04/01/2012 08:38

Claudine à Paris or Jonathon Strange. Or perhaps Parisians by Graham Robb, that was very good.

sensesworkingovertime · 03/01/2012 19:17

Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom....very sad but an excellent read.

mrswoodentop · 30/12/2011 23:07

Enjoyed the first part of WhenGod was a Rabbit but got rather lost in the second half, loved The Hand That First held Mine.

rosy71 · 30/12/2011 17:58

Relentless by Simon Kernick. I couldn't put it down.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/12/2011 15:51

Oh and one called, 'The Knife Man' about surgeon John Hunter - that was brilliant so thank you to the Mner who told me to read it. We then went to the Hunterian museum and it was fab - my best day out all year!

FluffyMummy123 · 18/12/2011 15:50

it is SO SO SO BAD
i gave up on it - king writes terribly and its so long and dull

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/12/2011 15:49

I'm hoping to get, '22.11.63' for Christmas, so no spoilers please! I like to save new King books until about 7pm on New Year's Eve and then stay up until it's finished.

I've read an awful lot of not very good stuff this year - but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed 'The Passage.'

Oh and I liked, 'The Bell Jar' too - can't understand how I'd managed to not read that until now.

FluffyMummy123 · 18/12/2011 15:44

I loved When God was a Rabbit, but my book club hated it.

Maggie O'Farrell for me this year. Can't wait to read Ali Smith though.

IndigoBell · 14/12/2011 21:47
