Everyone has been slating the choice of Anne Hathaway as Emma, but who do you picture would be better?

I dont know why, but I always picture the woman that played Claire in Corrie, and Shane west from ER as Dex (and I know he is American, and not posh, but thats who I see in my head).

Jennifer Ehle, thankyou birdofthenorth!

birdofthenorth · 01/09/2011 20:23

SayCool yes Jennifer Ehle would have been great! She was in the Kings Speech so still around. As an Aussie, so can do accents. Damn this Hathaway nonsense, so many missed opportunities!

From this thread I have learnt that Rebecca Hal is Charlotte Coleman's sister (I see it now!) and that Coleman is dead Sad You learn something new every day...

ggirl · 01/09/2011 19:56

Yes I knew that ,but still pictured her as emma morley

Longtime · 01/09/2011 19:53

Sadly she died of an asthma attack. Sad

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 01/09/2011 19:24

Oh my gosh, I had no idea Charlotte Coleman was dead! :( How sad. Scarlett was one of my favourite characters in any film ever!

mycatsaysach · 01/09/2011 19:07

charlotte coleman passed away few years ago Sad

i think dominic cooper would have been excellent and so would rebecca hall (from starter for 10)

think an american actress had to be chosen re u.s box office - boo

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 01/09/2011 19:05

Bollocks, I just watched the trailer. Now I'll have to watch the film. And I take back Daniel Craig. Don't know where that came from!

I loved the book till the ending Angry

Won't see the film as they always change things and I'll spend the whole time muttering to DH, 'They didn't do this in the book'

Although she's prob a bit old now, I actually pictured Emma a bit like the woman who played Lizzie in Pride and Prejudice. The Colin Firth one, not the Keira Knightley version. And Dex? Someone blonde and annoying although love the David Tennant idea. Maybe Daniel Craig?

DoubleDegreeStudent · 01/09/2011 18:57

bird yes absolutely! Although I'm another Carey Mulligan fan. I haven't seen the film - I couldn't put the book down and reread it over and over again (I was travelling alone so it was all I had for a week) and I feel cheated even by the advertising hoardings for it. The picture with Emma and Dexter all swept up in an embrace? That's not right at all - makes it look far too much like a love story, when for me it is (obviously) a love story, but it's not about their love, it's about them as people, if that makes sense

Moulesfrites · 01/09/2011 18:57

I know she is not an actress, or from Yorkshire, but I imagine her as a kind of slimmed down Sarah Millican - down to earth, northern, no-nonsense??

WhiffOfBath · 01/09/2011 18:50

I thought the idea of Anne H was bad until people suggested Kate Winslet. Grin

I think an unknown from Yorkshire would have been the best idea.

bigTillyMint · 01/09/2011 18:48

Yes to Kate Winslet and David Tennant. I wasn't all that impressed with the book and I definitely won't be going to see the film given everyone's opinions.

birdofthenorth · 01/09/2011 18:46

Anyone watch the West Wing? For some reason when I read One Day my Emma was quite like the woman who played Amy Gardiner -but with a broad Yorkshire accent!

Unfortunately I think I imagined Dexter as a cross between my ex-boyfriend & Hugh Grant!

CarlaBruni · 01/09/2011 15:46

Blimey, was just about to say Charlotte Coleman's sister as she used to be in Casualty.

Not seen film though on basis of hating book

ggirl · 01/09/2011 15:44

I pictured Charlotte Coleman who played Scarlett in Four Wedding and a Funeral

OracleInaCoracle · 01/09/2011 15:38

Carey mulligan here. Although anne hathaway looks like emma does in my head!

MyMamaToldMe · 30/08/2011 16:34

Another one who imagined Kate Winslet. Really don't know why Anne was chosen!

pamplemousserose · 30/08/2011 11:59

Romola Garai would have been a better Em than AH

twolittlemonkeys · 30/08/2011 10:34

Am going to see it tonight, but I imagined someone like Ruth Wilson in the role. She isn't Northern, but I expect she could do the accent well. I loved the book.

Galaxymum · 30/08/2011 10:14

Sarah Smart. She was fantastic as a modern female Heathcliff character a few years ago. Great northern accent that is genuine too.

Or Felicity Jones who I think has real star quality.

careergirl · 29/08/2011 22:13

I have not seen the film. I bought the book to see what the fuss is all about. And it blew me away. Much better than I expected and not the ending I thought it would be either.
Wow. Might have to see the film now but sometimes when I enjoy a book so much I don't like to see the film in case it sort of spoils the vision I have in my head of the characters

pamplemousserose · 27/08/2011 23:53

Kate winslet would have been good.

NonnoMum · 27/08/2011 23:48

I thought the guy who was the young love interest in Mamma Mia would've ben good (Dominic someone??)

As for Emma - um - Emily Watson?

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 27/08/2011 23:42

jessica stevenson? (just watching her in Confetti on BBC2 atm)
