Amazon refunded me successfully for my PS5 but they didn’t require any returns. Will they figure it out ?

I ordered a PS5 with 2 controllers for 629 euros. When I got it, it arrived with one controller instead of 2.

i brought from a vendor. I’ve contacted Amazon and requested a refund for the one missing controller. But I got a refund for the entire console setup but I still have the PS5 and Amazon didn’t require a return. Will they figure it out and require me to return it or will they leave me alone ?

It’s no answer to your question OP, so apologies.

But I’ve had so many used or damaged or misdescribed goods from private sellers on Amazon - but not Amazon as a seller - that I don’t really care about doing the right thing by them anymore.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/01/2026 17:00

Yes they worked out similar from me ages later

datgyalb · 08/01/2026 16:55

It’s because the chat contact centre is now ai and lacks the human intelligence

Friendlygingercat · 08/01/2026 16:52

I would not worry about keeping the item if they have not asked you to send it back. They would have to send you a prepaid shipping label.

I sell on Ebay and occasionally a buyer for an international sale contacts me because it arrived damaged. its not worthwhile getting the item back as I cannot resell a damaged item. The cost of return courier postage is hellish expensive. I just tell the customer to keep the item or dispose of it. I write it off against tax as a business expense. Refunding a customer for a loss/damage is a legitimate expense and the seller has a record in case of queries. This is probably what the Amazon traders are doing. When they do their self assessment form they will include it as part of their business expenses under refunds.

If they haven't required a return, it's yours. But I'd hold onto it for a while to be sure.

MirandaWest · 08/01/2026 16:42

Sometimes I've had the refund from Amazon before sending the item back but they have said that if the item isn't returned by a certain date that I'll be charged again.

Occasionally I have been told that there is no need to return the item and then I didn't need to send it back.

Isobel201 · 08/01/2026 16:37

I was not required to return one item once (small item value of under a fiver) but then I had to return other items of similar value. They've obviously made the mistake refunding you for the entire console, so I'd just take the refund and not worry about it.

Yes but you had actually returned something. OP is saying she hasn’t been told to.

Yes, that happens aswell. I was more saying if you did message and be honest, they would usually just tell you to keep it anyway. Its mostly robots anyway!

muddyford · 08/01/2026 16:11

I returned an item to Amazon the same day it arrived. Refund has arrived but I've not been charged in the first place! They may catch up or not!

This would make me wonder if it was genuine. How well reviewed are they?

Amazon do this all the time i wouldn't worry about it.

bigboykitty · 08/01/2026 14:56

It's not stealing so don't be ridiculous. Amazon sometimes don't require a return. OP is not a thief FFS

LayaM · 08/01/2026 12:32

I don't have much sympathy for the seller, that's kind of the deal with Amazon: you go into partnership with them, take their massive reach and questionable business practices, you accept the flip side of that which includes crap like this.

Edited

So its ok to steal from them?

PoundlandColumbo · 08/01/2026 14:04

I'd put the refund amount to one side (i.e. not spend it) then wait and see what happens.

namechange3651 · 08/01/2026 13:55

No way would I contact the vendor - Amazon did the fulfilling, they’re the one you have an issue with. I used to work for a company similar to Amazon (in terms of fulfillment) and we constantly had customers having issues who went directly to the vendors with issues instead of coming through us.

I’ve had similar with Amazon, and when I flagged it, was told to keep the item. Chances are they’d do the same, I might reach out that way OP.

Notarealblonde · 08/01/2026 12:35

I would do the right thing and message the company.

I’ve never had the Amazon refund until I’ve dropped the parcel off and the post office have scanned it.

Lafoofoo · 08/01/2026 11:20

If it was from a local small business I would absolutely call them.

Amazon? Meh. Lucky you.
