Any players on here? I’ve never played before but me and my 11yr old wandered in to the local shop today out of interest! We were given a figure from the 40,000 game and invited back next week for a free painting and game session! We’re excited but no absolutely zero about it! My husband thinks it’s a sure fire way of wasting money but I think it might be good for DS. Get him off his PC and something we could do together

In answer to your question OP, I think it's a brilliant hobby for anyone, I loved it when I was younger. Sure, it was viewed as a bit geeky back then, but I think that has changed a lot now and would always recommend table top gaming as a good, social activity.

Oh really? I should have a rummage then! I have a lot of metal models and some plastic kits (40k vehicles) which are unbuilt.

Off the top of my head I have the following boxed games; Space Marine (Epic 2 editions), WH40K and expansions, Bloodbowl, Space Hulk & expansions, Man O' War, Titan Legions (Epic) plus some extensions. Armies wise; Orks (Epic), Space Marines (WH40K), Man 'O War (Dwarves) and other models for the above games.

I've not really looked at Games Workshop for years, are the old games/rules/models still usable and wanted?

Be warned they get into one table top game and before you know it you have blood bowl, King's of war, X-Wing and various other games that involve planes etc.... all over your house in various states of painting.

Yes my husband is a table top gamer. Although there is a lot worse things he could be doing, it's harmless.

Just another thought.

If he is going to play against others you will need the most up to date rules not only for the game but the army that he is playing.

My heart is warmed with this thread! I think Games Workshop and their games are fantastic and for everyone. I've got so much up in the loft I've collected from the very late 80's, must dig them out!

Ah that’s really nice! Do you have kits you could pass them on to our play it with?

ebay often has whole armies up for sale.

Yeah I’m thinking I’ll get him a starter set for his birthday next month. It’s good timing really! 😀

CMOTDibbler Yes that would have been him, he's the only one there.It's a dear little shop, it does very well. Head Office say he could go anywhere but he likes it there. He always says he's so lucky that he can work doing his hobby. He ran the shop in Haverfordwest until it closed and also ran a couple of clubs. He's got two and a half children now so hasn't got the time!

Wish he'd get rid of the beard though

Is it mandatory for them to have beards?... The lovely chap in my local had one too 🤣

@Howyoualldoworkme we may well have met your son yesterday as our visit to Carmarthen ended up in Warhammer. If he was working in the afternoon he was lovely to my son.
DH has played table top RPGs forever, and ds also plays, though D&D rather than Warhammer- but likes to buy the miniatures from there. It's a great hobby IMO even though I have no interest in playing

To play at home to begin with when we didn't have a big enough collection my ds had his Warhammer army, and my dp play with chess pieces and assigned Warhammer to them, if that makes sense. It seemed to work for them.

You also play with armies of equal points, for example 1000 point army each, so if you didn't have enough you could just split what you have and play with less points to begin with. Less points is a shorter game too. Although I don't entirely understand it all.

You can just tell who you are playing against that X are actually Y.

Can you see why I was encouraging Blood Bowl with 16 models per team 😂

Just be aware that when the shops do open again for gaming.... It's definitely a smelly boy zone 😷 Although,to be fair,some shops are pretty good at sorting that out!

There's probably a Warhammer society near you as well, where people will meet up and play. 👍

🤣... My dd was worth us today, she’s 7 and has asked if she can paint some figures 🙈... This could become expensive but Im happy to introduce more girls to a Male domination hobby

DS started playing and we bought him the starter set, he then stopped playing but returned a year later, we found most of his figures were out of date and we were encouraged to buy the new starter set.

we are not keen to return due to the cost and lack of playing opportunities. We did the academy but once you learned how to play there were no clubs or opportunities outside of playing at home 😪

That’s interesting. I was just reading how they’ve recently?? Not sure how recently! Revamped. So they have new armies like you say, with new rules. So maybe my timing has been better? Shame for your son though! I can understand why you’re reluctant to start again!
