The switch is in the bin!? You know you could sell it and recoup your losses right? The tablet alone youd get 150ish for on Ebay.

You didn't come on here looking for advice or help, you just slated Fortnite declaring it was evil because you didn't realise the game retained your card details.

And people were helpful, saying they too had experienced similar problems and managed to get their money back.

I think anything overdone can lead to unpleasant personality changes, but these games are designed to make them want to overdo without careful guidance and time blocks.

I'm reminded of when my spouse put passwords on every device after I think DD2 was then 11 months old reached over when he'd left his Vita on the table and hit 'purchase' on a game. They do make it easy, because they want it to be easy spend money...but they also make it mostly easy to put in our own barriers to that.

My 10 year old has been playing it for 2 years and not once made an accidental purchase. If you're going to allow your children to use tech unsupervised you really need to get to grips with restrictions and know what it is they are on, racking up high bills is one of the least scary risks in my opinion!

Fortnite here. He is limited to an hour a day and there are no card details attached to the account. To be honest it's been really good for him to stay in touch with his friends over lockdown so I can't quite say it's totally evil. Because he's always had the strict time limits we haven't had too many issues when it runs out as it's the norm

Just as an aside, Fortnite IS a bit evil. My son stopped playing it a few months ago and he’s like a different (better, calmer, happier) child.

He's too young for Fortnite and he's too young to be responsible for using your bank card unsupervised.

My DS (10) has my card details on his account as he has monthly subscription (Fortnite Crew and whatever the subscription is for PlayStation). I don’t think there is another way of doing it. However, it is a card which has a limited amount of money on it, he does ask for every additional purpose and respects when I say no, and there is a notification email when he does purchase something. I go through my bank statement periodically and go over every purchase he has made with him, including the subscriptions so he can see how it adds up. I don’t use my main current account.

If he spends without authorisation, he loses the subscriptions. He also has had the talks about money out of my account is less money for food and bills so he needs to be trusted. I would sell his PS5 if he ran up that amount of money. Seriously. I cannot afford him to do that.

Why on earth did you have a card hooked up to a console?

Too late for you now, but games consoles do online gift cards. They are a great purchase for kids (and adults) who like to play online. Micro purchases can add up way too quickly and accounts can be hacked. We never attach a card to a console.

So you have an 8 yo kid that doesn't understand the value of online transactions. You got notifications that money IS being spent. You left your card details saved on the account. But this is somehow your son's and the company's fault?

Dod you even tell him about purchasing, told him that he has to ask etc.? Put any rules and boundaries in place? Checked security and purchasing settings?

I sincerely hope you don't get a refund. Why should you? You left your card details on a console and left an 8 year old in charge of it. And what you did to said 8 year old afterwards was cruel.

we have a switch but to buy stuff on fortnite it take us to switch online where I have to put my password in, then it asks how much you'd like to put on from your card. not your sons fault just a mistake on your part. just have a look at the settings and make sure it's password protected.

I always need to put in a password and get notified when something is bought with the settings we have, unless I've preloaded credit (even then I think it needs a passcode)

Also, my 7 year old (though no allowed to play fortnite, plays other games like minecraft and Roblox) knows full well when something costs money or not so I'd be having words with your son too.

It's your own fault for leaving a bank card on the account or not changing the settings.
