What board game are you playing - chat thread

I'm also wondering about Wrath of Poseidon. DD is mad about Greek Mythology! Looks complicated though.

That's cool, thanks for explaining. I'd been put off by the thought that it may be a little too similar to other games we have, but actually it seems distinct enough to be added to the collection at some point... :)

I really like the look of Ludwig, seems quite complicated!

Ingenious is similar to Qwirkle in that it involves creating threads of similar colours, but the playing area is limited, and the scoring is very different. You need to score with all the different colours in order to win as your lowest colour total is the one that is counted its win.

We love it. Would definitely recommend!

Oh a board games thread a month or so before my birthday, how helpful!

This year has been all about Dominion in our house and we have been surprised that DD (7) has mastered it as we thought it may be too tricky for her. With that in mind, do people think that the King Ludwig's Castle may also be accessible to her or still a bit too tricky? That one sounds fun.

We played Dixit at a friends' and that's definitely on the list for Christmas.

Cheers for the suggestions, shall look them up. She can't read at all which makes games that have cards with writing on and suchlike rather difficult.

Oh and My First Carcassonne would be good for a 5yo. It is a very quick game, so the adults getting bored thing is bearable.

Ntsku I'd say Labyrinth, Hey That's My Fish, Sleeping Queens, Super Tooth, Banana Split, Uno (ok most are card games) are all worth looking at :)

Intrigued about Ingenious, I've been looking at that for a while - is it similar to Qwirkle but with hexagons?

I'd say Indigo is worth a look for you if you like the sort of spatial awareness, planning type things. It's very pretty too. Ooh, and Pentago which is a twist (literally) on connect four type things.

Ah hah, fellow boardgamers! Our latest games are seven wonders duel (which right now I prefer to the original) and Kingdom builder which is also really good.

Trying to get DD into board games but its not going so well - any recommendations for a 5 year old that also isn't terribly boring for adults?

We love playing Qwirkle, Labyrinth and most recently Ingenious with our nearly-9 year old DD.

Are there some other similar make-you-think games anyone could recommend?

(the above being the ones we are absolutely, no need to think about it keeping)

Obviously I've since added Thunderbirds to the list and also all the Top Trumps and Brainbox games as they're always popular with the DCs.

We've played Thunderbirds a few times now. Won once. It is complicated and difficult to win! But a really great game. We've played Forbidden Desert more too.

I decided to start going through the games list I wrote, because I am determined to get rid of some that aren't that great. So far I've just highlighted the ones we know we definitely want to keep, without needing to try them again. The other ones are going to be tried at some point so we can see if they're worth getting rid so as to make space for more games obviously :).

I'm not sure, as I've only played Pandemic once (loved it). I think there's one where you actually play as the disease, trying to take over the world! Not sure if that's an expansion or a standalone game.

Have a look at Flashpoint - it's cooperative so a good bet if she likes Pandemic.

Looking for a gift for my friend, I know she got pandemic for her birthday and really likes it, is it worth getting her an expansion pack? I'm not sure what it adds to the game

Considering Dino Hunt for DD (9) at Christmas as she's dinosaur mad at the moment. Or any other decent dino games would be good. We already have Super Tooth.

So yesterday I was doing my "I'm bored and want to buy stuff" thing, where I search board games on ebay in case of bargains.

This is one of the games I found. Somehow I don't think it'll be on anyone's recommended list...

I seldom play board games. I have Dominion, Smallworld and Bang. Usually I am very busy at work. I have time only for small flash games such like Angry birds or Fruit ninja, www.friv4online.com/ . Just to kill time.

DS opened some of his birthday presents early today (we're staying at my mum's) - main one being the Thunderbirds co-op board game. Chosen by me and paid for by my dad as he doesn't like choosing!

DS is VERY excited. We've had a look inside and I've read the instructions. I must say it looks brilliant. Complicated but brilliant. The set up reminds me of Pandemic (only played that once but loved it).

Now the question is can we persuade my parents to play it with us tomorrow..? They are not particularly gamey people!

My desperation to buy a new game is ramping up and up!

I just made a separate wishlist on Amazon called 'Most Wanted' - for the games I am prioritising. So far I've added:

Two of the Citadels characters are thief and assassin and they can exercise their power to steal from or kill another player on their turn - don't know if that would be a bit hit with your 7 and 9 year old. My ds1 (12) likes to steal all my gold but was not impressed when I finally managed to assassinate one of his characters!

The aim is to build 8 buildings, which cost various amounts of gold. On your turn you either choose to take more gold or another building card, then you can build something if you like. You play as 2 characters per round so you can save your gold for your next character to build something more expensive - in my case, assuming ds1 hasn't robbed or assassinated them first!

We like it AND it comes in quite a small box and the cards/pieces of gold are good quality so that's good too.

Glad Dragonwood has been a success too. ISWYM about flow, we do get in a bit of a faff putting various cards down in the right places etc. It's a hazard of games with two decks etc I guess.

I'm going to be starting probability with the DCs and my maths class soon, so Dragonwood will probably (arf) be used for that. :)

I have decided to actually get rid of some. I know there are a few that in comparison to the rest are a bit lacking (usually stuff I've picked up in a charity shop, rather than something I've obsessively researched before purchase). Now I've made the list my plan is to go through everything and give it a proper try or two, and then we may weed some out if we think 'meh'.

Actually though there are probably about 10 we haven't even tried yet! And several we've only played once.

Citadels sounds interesting - suitable for 9 and 7 do you think?
