What board game are you playing - chat thread

Love Camel Up. We have the expansion as well although we've only played one of the expansion options. I love it when the "wrong" camel wins and upsets the ticket

I could quite do with the boots of buttkicking IRL I reckon :o Munchkin does sound good anyway.

I've agreed to go to a home ed meet up in the next town next week. Is it wrong that I mainly said yes because it gives us an excuse to go to the game shop there? :o

I'll be taking our duplicate board game presents to see if I can swap them. Want to have an idea of what we would like to buy instead but one of the two was a family present so I don't want to make the decision myself although I clearly have much better taste than DH and the DCs - if they allow us to exchange, it'll give us about £30 credit but I'd be happy to spend more than that.

Yes, we really enjoyed Camel Up too. I think it's the added gambling element of guessing which camel will win each leg and win/lose overall that lifts it up from being a straight forward board game race. And funny, like you say, when they all stack up! My dn is 13 and ds1 is 12 and they both really got into it.

We like Munchkin too. I think DS1 enjoys weighing in to help the monsters defeat his opponents as much as he does winning against them himself. And who doesn't like a game that can see you armed with the Boots of Buttkicking or a Really Impressive Title

Camel Upwas by far the best game we played this Christmas. Fairly simple to learn and play but really good fun and over in under half an hour so a great after dinner game. DC's are 10, 11 and 14 and this is the only game teen DS has ever actually asked to play! Lots of laughs and the quality amazing. Love the wooden camels that stack up on each other's "humps" too!

You could play your hands play to give him more of a chance :) And then things like fights etc are random :)

Thanks fuzzpig we have Labyrinth (and the similar Lego Hogwarts game) which DS enjoys. We do let him look at more things at once, so that it's a bit easier for him - initially we let him look at all of his cards, now we've reduced it to some of them, but still more than us.

001 I hadn't thought of doing that! Will have to persuade DH to play it with me one night, so that we can figure it out.

We also have Jamaica in the cupboard, as we thought DS would like the pirate theme (and the box is a thing of beauty...).

IsItMeOr then just take out some of the tougher guys and put no boss monster in. Pretty much guaranteed to win!

I think the station thing in TTR is that you are claiming a route, rather than a particular station? That was my argument anyway :o

When we have game nights with DSCs we tend to just take turns in choosing the main game. Later this month we will hopefully have one for DH's birthday, so it'll obviously be his choice, but after that we might have a rota or something. There are 8 of us (6 when DCs go to bed).

I need to figure out when we can have more game nights, was thinking once a month but thinking of it as only 12 times in a whole year seems ridiculous :( would love to do fortnightly but not sure my DSCs have enough opportunity to all be here at the same time! Curse them growing up and having lives of their own, the buggers :o :o

Short game for 6yo - Sleeping Queens, Uno. Labyrinth and Indigo are great if they have good spatial awareness, that's my DS' strength so they are two favourites of his :)

I was hoping to have time to play Forbidden Island but we need to tidy up instead. Sulking.

cranky splendour is a little bit like Jaipur the aim is to get 15 points and you have to buy cards using a combination of coins and other jewels which you can buy. There are bonus cards for sets which can help.you reach your points. I really enjoyed it and the games develop slightly differently each time.

We have Castle Panic in the cupboard, but DS struggles with tension, so we didn't think he could cope with the baddies winning yet....

Thanks for the Love Letter tip. I've just ordered the Munchkins version to play with 6yo DS. Looks like something he will enjoy.

Are there any other 5-10 minute 2-player games you'd recommend for a bright 6yo? He's played and enjoyed Forbidden Island and Rumikub as an indicator of level he can manage.

He has ASD, and we need a number of short activities to help manage our daily routine - so something engaging, but with a natural end (also helps if we can manipulate the play a little to increase his chances of winning...).

Whoowasit went down well a couple of Christmases ago, a sort of co-op junior cluedo, with beautiful artwork and a magic box that gives you clues. Still comes out occasionally.

Yeah, I play Rummikub with kids too - they normally destroy adults!

Played Ticket to Ride for the first time recently and it was great. Also really enjoyed Camel Up which also had never played before.
Our go-to game is always Settlers of Catan.

I think you could play Jaipur with your children Fuzzpig - you build up cards in your hand to exchange for treasures, which give you your points, and they could help you choose which ones to go for. Or, if they are like my ds, take over all choices, leaving you there just to hold the cards for him

Is Splendour like Jaipur, Wolfcub? The descriptions sounded similar.

We've just got Rumikub this Christmas and it's a great game for adults. Recommend it.
