People talk about these crazy massive families that exist on news but what is the largest family you know? Im from quite a middle class area down south. Most families I know have one or two kids, sometimes three. I have one friend pregnant with her fourth and know one school mum with five! Very unusual though.

My SIL has five birthday children plus two step children. Her best friend has seven birthday children and one adopted. My mum was one of seven…

What’s a birthday child?

This thread is really interesting to me as I’m always reading about mothers of four on here, but I only know a couple IRL.

Just a hint to anyone who finds out that someone they know has more than the standard 2.4..... please do NOT say "Oh, don't you have a telly?!"

Its not funny and it is the LEAST original thing you can say. Its been said to me soooo many times and frankly its boring. If I dont eyeroll, you caught me on a good day.

That said, ime its mainly men who say it, implying that women only want to have sex with them if there is nothing good on TV which I think says more about them than me!

Husband’s dad is now up to 10 (5 mothers). My husband is the eldest, the youngest is younger than our own child. Pretty evenly spaced over 40ish years.

OneNewEagle · 22/10/2026 23:55

I’m one of a lot due to remarriages so there’s half and step siblings as well as full . All very complicated, only my full feel like siblings though as there’s a big age difference.

my Nan and grandad had seven.

AcrosstheBorder · 22/10/2026 23:55

Dad was from a family of 7 children.

I have 5 children ranging in age from 21 down to 7. I have had many comments from people over the years (occasionally some that verge on insulting!) But at my younger children’s school there is another family with 7 children so I don’t feel so strange!

And I should add, that all 5 are with my husband!

I once got chatting to a woman in a playground who had 7. That was quite a while ago, so she would have had time to produce more.😂

My grandma was the youngest of 12.

NorfSideBlues · 22/10/2026 23:43

My father was one of 14 children. Three of my grandparents came from big families (beteeen 9-12 children). FIL is the oldest of 10 and MIL was one of 8.

Obviously not modern day (and we are Irish Catholic, if you’re wondering!).

I don’t have any more recent examples of friends/family /connections with more than 4 children.

TattyBluebell · 22/10/2026 23:41

There is a lady down the road from me and she has six.. all boys!
She always looks immaculate when she walks past taking her children to school and so do the children. I've no idea how she does it!

Takeapause · 22/10/2026 23:41

I Know lots of people from big families. Up to 12.

But these days if I’m thinking of actual friends and colleagues - 5.

A friends ex has 7 and brags about it with FB posts saying “everyone wants to be me” which I find strange.

waitinginwonderland · 22/10/2026 23:35

My Gran had 8 but you’re going back a bit! A good friend is one of 13(!) but it’s a combo of full/half/step/adopted children, her Mum didn’t give birth 13 times. Thinking about similar age friends, DH has got a friend with 4 and a friend with 5 but both are remarriages. Mostly 1 or 2 here.

RealistScot · 22/10/2026 23:34

Of my generation (in our fifties) - 7 with kids aged mid late 20s to mid teens (religious family) and 5 (same age range plus first grandchild. Not religious)

socialdilemmawhattodo · 22/10/2026 23:31

5, but that was 3 from 1st marriage before I knew her, then 2 with 2nd husband.

MyFairLady27 · 22/10/2026 23:30

We have 9 from 2-16

Crystal12345 · 22/10/2026 23:30

I’m 1 of 5. My cousin who is in her 40’s, has 6 kids and they all have different dads, literally 6 different dads 🙈 There’s a few mums at my kids school who have 5.

Iyamnotayam · 22/10/2026 23:29

I know someone who is one of 16. They have 5/6 children themselves

My mum is one of 7, dad is one of 4. And I just have the one half sibling 🤷🏽‍♀️

SapphireSteel28 · 22/10/2026 23:26

I have two friends with four children, and one with five. I have 3 with no children, and the others have 2 or 2 like me.

There was a woman I knew who’d had 8-the first at 14, then the last at 40. She may yet make 10!

aniloD · 22/10/2026 23:26

Not exactly what you were asking but I am one of 7 kids and my ex is one of 12.
Ive lost count of how many cousins my kids have

ladygindiva · 22/10/2026 23:26

Used to teach a kid who was the youngest of eleven 😱

HorseandHeron · 22/10/2026 23:25

A friend of mine has seven. Four of her own, then her DH walked out while they were young and she remarried a man with three children, whose wife had walked out on them. So seven school age children under one roof. And she has an incredibly high powered job. Cliche, but I don't know how she does it.

Eeyorefan · 22/10/2026 23:25

Took my dc to a party and one of the mums there had had her 6th 2 weeks earlier.
someone else who ran a semi regular craft event I went to was pregnant with her 5th at the time

Dollymylove · 22/10/2026 23:25

My dad was one of 9, one died shortly after birth. Not unusual back then to have large families. (1910s/1920s)
I know a woman who has 10 children 😬

Vetoncall · 22/10/2026 23:23

A good friend of mine is one of 15. We went to school together (all-girls grammar in NI in the '90s, the school wasn't Catholic but her family was). Dad was a surgeon, Mum was a teacher and they had a big house. They were/are pretty much all academically and professionally successful - over 1/3 of them are Drs - 3 medical doctors (including my friend), a vet and 2 PhDs. None of the 15 has anything like that number of kids though, they range from none to 3.

MeowDoku · 22/10/2026 23:23

I knew of a family through work who had 11 children, but they had involvement from the criminal justice service and social care.

My dad is one of 9 (Catholic family) and my mum is one of 6 (including 2 step) but I think bigger families were more common back then
