If you're in that neck of the woods though, Lydford Gorge is absolutely worth a visit - amazing walk and NT. It's also round the corner from Buckfast Abbey EH, so you could do both on the same day.

If I recall correctly there's a pub halfway round at Castle Drogo down by a river/stream.

Fingle Bridge Inn

Enjoy the long hike up the hill at the end 🥵

Surely depends on what walk you do

@NimbleTaupeTiger Oh really?! Oh that should be fun in the gale force winds and pouring rain! 🤣

If you email them directly they will be able to tell you. Scone options vary between different NT properties (vegan / GF etc).

Thanks all. We’re going to take our chances at Castle Drogo as we’ll be visiting it anyway and good to have some back ups if it doesn’t pan out!

@NimbleTaupeTiger I did google it, but their website wasn’t specific about scones, at least the page I found wasn’t. It muttered about availability. In cases such as this I don’t trust the AI round up. I’d rather have someone who’s been recently confirm it.
I should probably have just put scones as it’s a cream tea we are really after.

Edited

Most places will provide cream and jam at a cost if you take your own scones. If you want cream tea there it's an option.

I'm lactose intolerant and cart my own thermos flask of lactofree cream around if I know I'm having desert somewhere.

Surely a visitor attraction has a telephone number, dont they answer the phone?

I wouldn't trust random strangers, how do you know they are giving you correct info?

Mill End Hotel is nearby and does lovely food. Chagford (nearest town) has a number of places to eat too

I might check with Castle Drogo as they have recently changed their cafe

If you want excellent gluten free scones, I’d recommend the Two Bridges Hotel in Postbridge. It’s not that close to Castle Drogo, but if you’re already coming all the way from Torquay, it’s not a million miles off either. I’d also look to see what Holne Tearoom has, you could take a walk through the woods at Holne, which I believe are also NT.

It’s nat trust run so for sure they will

NimbleTaupeTiger · 20/10/2026 16:00

I just googled it for you and yes, they do gluten free cakes and gluten free bread for sandwiches and soups.

To be fair you could simply have googled that yourself couldn't you?
