We earned it between us and he continues to do so now, we made many good choices pre children that has set us up significantly. We are the same age

I also find that not paying tax would have been a "good choice to help set me up", truth is I'd probably be loaded had I put all that 20 yrs tax in an investment fund, gosh I'd be riding a porshe now! 🤣

Sky, channel 4, BBC, Dailymail - always the worst

Always the "worst" at what? You've shown yourself to be very ill informed, and your statements about the UK are risible.
Are you a consumer of GB "News"?

britindubai · 20/10/2026 13:30

RhododendronFlowers · 20/10/2026 13:27

@britindubai I can recommend Politics Live on BBC2 daily.
Very good, informative. Also Laura Kuenssberg Sunday Morning show. All the major issues, intelligent reporting and interviewing.

I will check these out

The very fact you have started a thread means you are either putting yourself at risk legally or are merely going to repeat the official government line.

Do you think it's possible for all Brits in Dubai to answer questions honestly under the threat of arrest if say anything about the military situation being bad or concerning or are critical of the UAE government in anyway?

There's no such thing as the ability to be 'honest' about Dubai. Being honest means you are free to say something negative, which you aren't, so you will avoid any difficult questions, self-censor or hand wave and merely repeat what you are supposed to rather than say anything 'honest'.

It is a put up or shut up culture. If you are an expat and dont like this you go home or learn to deal with that. There is no option B.

It's a fundamentally dishonest thread for that reason because it implies that if you weren't happy you'd be able to state that. You aren't. So all this thread can be is state propaganda for UAE or you are incredibly foolish and putting yourself at significant risk. Everyone reading this thread should be very mindful of this.

It'll be interesting how influencers cope if Iran's threat to destroy the internet cables is carried out. Weirdly we won't know about this though, because they'll be unable to share how it's affecting them with us. It'll just all go quiet.

Several pages later and OP has done nothing except prove your point.

But will still have only had one of you working for 10years or so. Even high paid industries dont start at mega mega bucks. And now what he pays needs to cover you forever, plus both of your shares of the services the children use until they are tax payers. I think you probably have overestimated your contribution v your take out here, particularly if you consider your whole lifetimes.
Not that it matters. That’s what fair taxation is for, to ensure everyone can have those essential services provided plus a personal safety net which is why you opting out of contributing is upsetting people.

Sure ok

I could definitely do with having more money.
It's not everything, though. There's more to life than just chasing more and more of it.
I'm with the pp - some things just aren't worth it, and living in what sounds like a gilded cage sounds more like a prison than paradise.
I'd rather stick with my morals.

And which ones do you watch?

Unsafe streets in the UK, yet you spend months here.

sittingonabeach · 20/10/2026 13:27

If you have so much money that you won’t need to work when you return, why did you need to go to Dubai?

britindubai · 20/10/2026 13:26

Daygloboo · 20/10/2026 13:18

Nothing to do with.bittterness. More to do with decency and morals. Some ppl know the price of everything and the value of nothing. It's sad UK is producing so many if theae types now. No true class anymore. Just money. Yuck.

And I can bet you wish you had more money

Safer from war - perhaps however the UK are looking into building a defence system due to what has happened out this way and potential future threats that will go beyond the ME.

Safety on the streets from others, not convinced on that one

You are mid 30s now and gave up when you had your children. I really doubt you earned enough in that time to pay all the tax this claims. Or do you mean your husband d did? Not quite the same. And also unlikely unless he’s much, much older than you are.

The UK was definitely safer than Dubai last summer but the OP cannot say that.

I think “as mentioned previously” I have more than contributed to the system, I would hazard a guess (given your direct bitterness) that I’ve covered for you and your family too

Yetanotherone12 · 20/10/2026 13:17

If you are 33, have two young children then you likely have only worked and contributed for less than 10 years.

you intend not to work when you return.

so I doubt you have “more than contributed” to the system. You’d need to have been a spectacularly high earner to have paid into what you will eventually take out.
