My 6 year old getting himself messy before school would you judge this as a fellow mum on the school run

Not in the least.

Honestly, I wouldn't judge the trousers being a tad short but I would judge a kid coming into school in morning in a dirty jumper. Sorry. I have 3 primary kids and it's pretty easy to grab a fresh jumper.

Do you notice whether another child has his socks on inside out?!
I turned up to work with odd shoes on one day - I really wouldn't notice if someone else's kid had toothpaste down their jumper!!

Nah, I wouldn’t judge I’d assume the white was toothpaste, the inside out socks anybody can do and I wouldn’t bat an eyelid!

I think it is great that a 6 year old is dressing himself and I would expect there to be a gap between his shoes and trousers when he's on his bike.

I pay zero attention to other people’s kids as too busy organising my own.

Anyone who judge little kids for how they’re dressed, says more about them than you and they wouldn’t be a person I’d choose to be friends with!

I love this. I'm 63 and love seeing kids be kids. My daughter was always very neat and tidy my son quite the opposite. He was a rascal. 31 now and managed to scrub himself up quite well these days. Life's too short to be spotlessly clean all the time.

So the OP needed to either take him home and then make him late for school, or drop one in later and disturb the teacher and class?

Not in the slightest. My seven year old can leave his bedroom looking tidy and arrive at the front door looking like a street urchin.

@Funkyfoxy I don't always have clean uniform ready to go beyond what we need for the day, I'm not that organised! It's probably easier with three kids, you'll have loads of spares and hand me downs. With just one we only have what we need.

Guys I'm just being honest.. I'm the biggest scruff but I always present my kids clean and tidy for school. Obviously if something happens on the way to school that can't be helped but if you leave home in morning with kid in a dirty jumper that could have been changed (OP didn't make clear which it was) then yh I would

Some will but most won’t. Find your people as the judgy ones aren’t worth bothering with. I probably made friends with other Mum’s by recounting my morning (general parenting) mishaps with our kids. Still do in their mid teens. There are always some kids that turn up immaculately everyday - good for them.

Clean happy healthy children are what’s important - the odd mark is nothing and in my books very normal with active kids. Having your child dress themself and cycling to school sounds very impressive. Is there something you’re worried about?

She says she didn’t know what was on his front but assumed it was something from his bike, so I’d assume she thought he was clean when he left the house. Otherwise I don’t think you’d assume the mess was from the bike.

At school drop off I was too busy trying to shepherd my two into their classes to notice much, tbh.

But on the off chance that I did happen to pay attention…. As a one-off, I wouldn’t take the slightest notice of a dirty jumper. But if your child was dirty every single time on multiple days (not just occasional now and then), and especially it looked like general dirt rather than splashes from his bike etc, I’d probably think you were struggling a bit.

Are you ok? It sounds like you’re worrying quite a lot. The trousers sound fine but even if they weren’t kids spring up suddenly sometimes and catch you out.

If it makes you feel better, I sent my daughter in with bright orange palms one day. She’d been down my makeup bag the night before and found a very old bottle of fake tanner from years ago (I’m naturally olive-skinned and she’s as pale as alabaster, so it was the dark version just to make things worse). She’d hidden her hands from me until we got out the car - they were horrific 😂😂🫣

Honestly, try not to worry. You know your child is generally clean, well-clothed, happy, and fed. That’s what’s important. The odd chaotic day really doesn’t matter 💐

My daughter showered yesterday afternoon and had a bath in the evening, all her clothes were fresh on after breakfast this morning and she turned up to school with a dirty mark on her face and wild hair (helmet hair)… I wiped the mark with my finger, but hey ho… good to go.

And what if people can’t afford another jumper? Both my dc go to schools where they have to have logo’d jumpers. My ds’s school is in a very deprived catchment- a lot of the parents are struggling to make ends meet and simply can’t afford excess uniform. Or they have two jumpers and one is going through the wash whilst the kid wears the second one. Honestly, judging uniform for being less than pristine is really shitty and says more about you than it does about them.

Not at all! In fact I would feel better if I noticed any of that in other children as I wouldn't feel like I was the only one.
To be honest the school run is madness and there is no way I would notice if another child has a spot on his clothes or inside out socks.
My DS showers every day and we leave for school with brushed teeth, brushed hair and a clean and tidy uniform. This does not mean he ARRIVES with combed hair or clean uniform!! And occasionally he might have inside out socks, pen marks on his hands or a smudge of milk around his mouth but we are so not alone there and I would never judge!

I wouldn't judge for that and certainly wouldn't notice inside-out socks. But I do make a big effort to make sure DS goes to school looking presentable, probably because my mum was the same when I was a kid. I ran back inside to grab a wet cloth as we left for school this morning, as I noticed DS had peanut butter down his jumper. If we'd already got to school then so be it.

What I judge is the parents of a child who gets distressed because they’ve got a bit of mud or dirt on them!

Children being messy? Socks inside out? Nah, they won’t be doing it when they’re 30!

I think most parents are too busy dealing with the morning rush of getting their own children into school to be looking and judging other people's children! I certainly wouldn't notice inside out socks or a bit of a mark on a school jumper 🤷‍♀️ are you generally an anxious person? Do you think your worries about judgement by other parents is out of proportion?

My DD5 went in with a small hole in her leggings today. I'll whack a patch over it at some point. But by the time she's walked through the sandy playground and gone down the slide forward, backwards and sideways, she's usually pretty grubby by the time she gets to the classroom door. And with a couple more holes in her leggings.

Who cares if anyone is judgey? I was once pulled aside at the end of school to be told my dd was in a spare pair of pants because she wasn't wearing any that day. Sitting cross legged on the carpet in a skirt was a tad revealing. Needless to say for about the next 18 months she had to hoick her skirt up for me everyday before we left the house so I could check. As for ds, he was almost impossible to keep clean. If there was something to fall over and get mucky knees he'd find it. As long as they are bathed, mostly have their hair brushed, or even tidy-ish and normally have clean clothes it's all good. Who hasn't had their kid come home with yoghurt down their jumper (and why is it always on a Monday, in winter when nothing will dry, never a Friday?!). In terms of safeguarding, school will know the difference between kiddy dirt and the unkempt/neglected mucky. You don't want to make a huge deal out of getting dirty.
