Absolutely not coping

I just need somewhere anonymous to vent because I can't say anything in real life and don't have anyone to turn to.

I am a very single parent of two DC aged 11 and 10. Their dad is not allowed contact at all, as per court order.

Both DC have additional needs. Dc1 is in a specialist provision, Dc2 in mainstream with an EHCP. We were doing pretty well between the three of us.

We went on holiday to Orlando in August, ended our trip with DC1 in intensive care with what turns out to be type 1 diabetes. Stuck in Orlando in intensive care with my DC and a life changing new diagnosis.

We made it home, took two weeks to get her back to school. I'm fighting everyday to manage her diabetes, her levels are a mess and her needs were already complex. She no longer has school trsnsport as she needs a PA and there aren't any available. So i have had to put DC2 into full time wrap around care. I also somehow have a job. My school runs are now 3 hours a day.

DD got sent home today due to her levels being low and I'm 90% sure it was my mistake this morning.

I got called by DS's school as they don't want me letting him walk in alone to breakfast club. I've paid no attention at work as my phone rang 4 times from school before I picked her up.

DD's other needs sre really starting to flare up. Im battling her all day everyday just to keep her safe.

DS is meant to be on adhd meds, i have remembered one day in a fortnight. I have remembered DD's iron meds twice in a fortnight. Nothing I do is making her sugars go correctly.

I am currently a God awful employee.

I dont know how I am supposed to cope with any of this. Absolutely everything in me wants to say fuck this, book a hotel and go away a few days and just switch my phone off. DS' school were right to call me, but I've cried since as I am just trying to do my best. I feel like I can't breath and the only option I have is to tell someone they've got to be with someone else and urgently.

Sounds like you are coping with a lot and spiralling as feeling understandable overwhelmed.
Can you be signed off work for a week or two to get some breathing space?

Can you have a carers assessment? You maybe able to lever in help under the EHCP process although I’m aware it’s challenging.

Is setting up a medication box on a Sunday with days of the week an option & an alarm on your phone for meds & the child that copes the best has a meds alarm too. My teen takes daily meds we do this.

This too will pass you just need to find a small sliver of time to fix your own oxygen mask” to reset. Good luck I’m sure others will have more suggestions

You’re not coping, most people wouldn’t. It’s great that you recognised it. Ring in sick to work tomorrow. Ring the GP and get an appointment for you about not coping and one about your daughter.

Ask school to start TAF meetings.

@Qb2654 what a difficult time for you.
A couple of things - definitely ask for a social care assessment, both for yourself and your children (especially DD). You could end up with some respite support on the basis of all your needs.
If your child's SEN provision on their EHCP includes transport to school, lean hard on the LA to sort out the PA issue. Sounds a very feeble excuse, they will have agencies providing TA support which could be an option if they really can't find anyone elsewhere. Remind them of their statutory duties.
And maybe try for some compassionate / carers leave from work to give yourself time to get better organised with the practical stuff like medication.
Hope things improve for you all.

You are doing so well! DS has Autism and was diagnosed type 1 during the Easter holidays 3 years ago. I needed to take 2 weeks off work when he first went back to school in order to make sure all staff were trained and because i was completely exhausted with all of the night waking.
What kept me sain was reminding myself that type 1 is not an exact science. You can do everything right and levels can still be all over the place.
Coincidentally, we were also in Orlando in August and we still haven't got ds levels back to normal and we've been back a few weeks.
Please dm me if you have any questions or need a listening ear who understands.

Thank you.

Im just at the stage that I feel so genuinely unwell that I can't string a thought together.

I cant get signed off, my boss just beant over backwards to give me what I need to manage transport

You can get signed off. Your health is just as important as your children's.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/09/2026 18:44

Ok. But you can’t work more than you can manage either- and if you are feeling very unwell, you may be risking making yourself extremely unwell. Remember the children need you well, long term.

This is a temporary crisis. Just put one foot in front of the other. Ask the schools if there’s any way they can support while you are finding some kind of stability. Can they administer medication for one child?

I set up meds for the week. It’s a Sunday job. If I don’t do it, I don’t remember meds. I still have to attach it to a routine- if I’m not sat at my chair at dinner, I don’t take those meds that day. It’s hard.

Notbuiltforheat · 23/09/2026 18:47

Please please call social care and ask for a carer’s assessment in your own right. NOBODY could do what is required of you without cracking.

roaringdragon · 23/09/2026 19:11

I second social care assessments. A carer’s assessment for you and assessments of DC’s needs for them. On their website, Contact has model letters you can use.

I know you have said you can’t go off sick, but you can. Parent-carer burnout is real and takes a huge toll physically and mentally. You need to look after yourself. Reaching parent-carer burnout is not in anyone’s best interests - not you, not DC, not their schools and not your employer’s interests. You will have a lot more time off if you try to push through burnout.

Have you challenged the LA saying there is no PA available? Their transport duty doesn’t disappear. They are responsible. Lack of staffing is not a lawful excuse for breach of their duties.

I also sort my DSs’ medications on a Sunday. For your DC’s ADHD and iron medications, can you set alarms?
