To drop a sport or not

Hi, would welcome advice from parents of sporty teenagers (because I was not one!) ds is almost 14 and plays two sports to a high level, as in is in the top team in both and competes nationally in one. But training and competition is really ramping up and both of us are worried about burn out, physically and mentally. There are also clashes with competition on same day or close together on subsequent days ie late evening and then morning. All the advice I read online is to keep them playing a range of sports till 16 and not to specialise but this weekend he's talking about dropping one. I've discussed ramping one back or 'playing for fun' but hes adamant. My heart says let him but wondering has anyone done this and regretted it ? He's very good... not international level good but certainly on track to compete at a good national level as an adult if he keeps going.
