Going insane - I had a termination at 5 weeks pregnant and now I’m having what feels like kicking (I would be 18 weeks)

I know this might upset people talking about terminations etc but I had my reason. I was on the pill and already have 3 kids.

the past two days I’ve had patterns of what feels like kicks. I did a pregnancy test when I should after a termination and it came back negative. I’ve never tested again until the other day and I stupidly got pee on the part that shows the lines. I’m still on the same pill.

now I’ve had these weird kicks for two days and it’s I the morning and night. You can see my stomach move and feel them. It feels exactly how my three pregnancies felt

surely this isn’t possible? After a very negative test?

They don’t drop to nothing though? They plateau and decrease a bit. There’s a chart here I found online. (Photos take a while to be approved). I can’t find any evidence that HCG drops to below 10 (so negative on a sensitive home pregnancy test) after 10 weeks. Or at any point until full term.

What CAN happen is HCG gets so high it “confuses” a pregnancy test and they can show very faint when it’s too high. But that’s a different thing to HCG fading to a negative test.

Sorry - you’re right. The graph that confused me is because it’s relative hormone levels - where I thought it was absolute. Embarrassing! Sorry for misinformation… but a pregnancy test still might not show positive (but now I better understand why!)

Yes, this is true. This is why some women end up in labour having been unaware they were pregnant and saying "but I tested and it was negative". It's because they tested too late. Even some GPs don't understand this.

Probably because most people on the thread, me included, did not know that.

Pregnancy tests measure hCG levels and the tests only detect once they’re over a certain level. They rise swiftly in early pregnancy (but not immediately, which is why if you have nothing or a faint line you should test every other day - the level should be doubling every two days). But then hCG levels also fall quite quickly and are very low for the latter half of pregnancy. Looks like they reach their peak around week 10, but very quickly drop after, so wouldn’t be a helpful test for OP in any way.

OP it’s probably gas playing tricks on you. I sometimes feel this and there’s no way I can be pregnant. You’re probably emotionally more prone to tying it to a pregnancy because of what you’ve just been through.

Dont pregnancy tests stop showing positive after a few months? If this is somehow a 3 or 4 month pregnancy (however unlikely that seems) then a scan or an examination by medical staff would be more useful.

The only “symptoms” here are those of a 2nd term pregnancy after all.

Everyone’s saying “do a pregnancy test” but I thought they became less reliable in later stages of pregnancy because of the hook effect? The last thing you need right now is to be reassured by a false negative test - I’d go to the doctor instead.

But I’ve also experienced “phantom kicks” without being pregnant, it’s very common and definitely plausible.

I had kicks after my miscarriage for months after but was just wind or my empty womb going back in place.

Yes, I had them for a couple of years after having DD2, IIRC.

Have you had periods since you had the termination?

Do you have any symptoms like sore breasts, sickness or what might be a bump developing?

A 24 hour ASDA or Tesco will have tests on the shop floor, so you can still buy one if the pharmacy counter is closed.

The ASDA own-brand ones have a reputation for false positives.

It's possible that you have stomach cramps or trapped wind. I get visible bumps popping up on my stomach during IBS bouts.
