Husband denied receiving money from his mum

My husband has been given money by his mum - he has concealed this. I noticed it on his bank statement & asked him outright & he denied it. Ive checked again & my eyes arent decieving me, its there in black & white.

i'm really mad about it because it shows he isnt honest & has comfortably lied to my face. He is fairly selfish with money in general, he pays most of our bills, I work part time & struggle on a small wage as do the lions share of parenting. Its £1500.

For context, we've been married 10 years, 2 young children & marriage isnt a happy one.

Am I over reacting? How would you feel?

None of it matters really if your relationship isn’t happy.

i don’t always agree with the abuse- financially controlling thing because it depends on so much. I always say I read a thread once on x, man saying his gf thought it was unfair he wanted a 50/50 split with bills when she earned a third of what he did. Men said eff her, women said how dare you!!! Men believe they’ve earned what they have and everyone should just split bills or earn more and that women are trying to get their money etc etc

Is he selfish or the saver, trying to put money aside? I always thought dh was totally selfish and then when he said ok look we’ll figure it out together and stopped I realised all the things we’d been arguing about that he now let me off with, meant we weren’t saving anything and when I added our ‘I stopped into the petrol station and we got ice creams’ or ‘ I decided the kids needed new stationary instead of what they had’ we were spending a fair bit a month that could have been saved (could have gotten a six pack from Aldi for example instead of spending 15 quid!

saying that none of it matters because he’s lying and you don’t believe in his intentions. Honestly I’d get putting as much money aside as possible for yourself just in case but I’d talk to him again. I’m so sorry op

Hi OP, did you discuss with him the fact that you are still paying off the family holiday out of your lower earnings, while he has cash left over at the end of every month?

Surely you can see that this is grossly unfair, if not abusive?

If you can't get him to see things differently, which seems unlikely, then you really don't have much choice but to divorce, otherwise this stressful, unfair life will be yours for many years to come. Don't put yourself through that!

I didn't explicity say this, I really struggle to be vulnerable & ask for help/show weakness. But he knows what i earn, i'm on min wage. It is very stressful & very unfair - i just dont know how id ever be able to navigate divorce alone, I have no savings & no access to any & no family to help. I feel entirely stuck.

This sounds like a very unhappy marriage and a dark family home, for years.

I too would siphon off money from family in this marriage, and I think you should too if you are ever given money

FlorenceLawrence · 11/09/2026 10:09

I guess the lying about the gift feels like a big thing to you because he's so mean & secretive about money the rest of the time. He's keeping you financially strapped, while he controls the money, and you do all the unpaid childcare.
It is really awful going through a divorce with a man like this - I can see why you don't want to do it tbh. If he does end up divorcing you, know that he won't be your friend, it won't be amicable - he will try to keep as much of "his" money as he can. So beware. Keep on top of the finances - if you do divorce, you are entitled to an equal share of the assets, even though he will see it as "his" money.
Maximise your earnings now, and make him do his 50% of childcare. It's simply unfair that you've taken on the childcare, while he earns and controls the money. Your sort of set-up only works if all the money is shared IMO.

You just need to tell him that you are not willing to adjust your working hours around the children either anymore so from now on you do 50-50 of the drop offs and pick ups. He can't unilaterally decide that he can't do his share.

I will be doing this. The only way I can increase my income & reduce my money stress/gain financial security is to work more. So he needs to step up & stop making it difficult for me to do this.

Agree 100% with this comment.

If I was given money from my mum id spent it on a holiday/couple of nights away for us all

It was a gift from his mother.
She would be worrying about you all and trying to take away some stress.

The lying is not good.

Keep hold of any savings rather than going on a holiday. You can not afford a holiday if you are still paying it off.

Once the children are in school, you are back working more hours and you have something in savings, you will be able to reassess your course of action.

Whenlifegiveslemons · 11/09/2026 09:35

Pinkbananaa · 10/09/2026 06:11

Im going against the grain
Its a gift off his mother to do what he wishes with it, your having issues with him. He plays all the bills surely your car and phone are your responsibilty? The fact youve saved up for a holiday would suggest you have more spare money than your making out. Id love to be able to have extra money to put away. Id cancel the holiday use the money for divorce proceedings.

I considered this but things had improved. The holiday wasnt an expensive one, but im pay it off now still so I dont have the money you may assume.

If it’s a gift from his mum to him, I’m not sure it’s any business of yours. If your mum gave you a monetary gift, would you be prepared to share it?

The lying is a different matter. Maybe ask him - and yourself - why he does this?

He said it was a gift from her, some money she had recieved she shared with her children. She has done this before & previously he has told me about it, maybe twice before & we used to to buy garden furniture.

I dont have an issue with him being gifted money but lieing about it is the issue here. But as some have said, I guess its to be expected when we arent in a happy marriage.

Yes, I think that’s probably the case.

Can you sort your marriage out?

Whenlifegiveslemons · 11/09/2026 09:23

PressTheSwitch · 11/09/2026 09:12

If I was having marriage issues and maybe heading for divorce, I wouldn’t share this money information either. I’d be keeping it.

If I was in a happy marriage, I would share the info and decide together what to use it for, unless it was a loan I had organised with my mum to help with something specific.

@Whenlifegiveslemons check why she gave it in the first place and go from there.

We had a conversation last night & discussed finances & he agreed to increase how much he pays to the joint account to cover bills etc. We also discussed this money & how he lied about receiving it, he completely changed what he had said months ago & said he hadnt denied receiving the money. Back then - i asked him if his mum had given him money to cover his tax bill (it was within days of end of year & I knew he had a bill to pay) & he said "no, she didnt give me money to pay my tax bill". I remember the conversation so vividly as his demenaour was so calm when he said this & i questioned what i had seen, as trust him entirely. I didnt pursue it further. Last night he said, he answered that his mum hadn't given him money for his tax bill BUT she had gifted him money he used it to pay the tax bill, in his eyes they are 2 different things and he didnt lie - in mine its the same & he 100% did.

She gave it to him as a gift to spend as he pleases, he didnt share that info when we had this conversation last time - instead he led me to believe I was imagining this payment i had seen on a statement.

Again, this makes me question so much more - his ability to manipulate with words & decieve & conceal. He had a bonus this year & a 1.5k gift & didnt book us a family holiday, I scrimped to pay for one & am still paying it off.

No we didnt get to that point yet - he had shared with family we were having marriage issues but not divorce (as far as I know!)

I would happily work full time but he isnt willing to adjust his working hours much to accommodate the children so its impossible to do so. I asked if he could fix one pick up recently & said he cant - he works from home 2/3 days a week so his job isnt inflexible. Id love to earn more, that would be a solution but finding a full time job to fit around school hours is near impossible.

You forgot he was going to divorce you? I mean if it’s that bad where it’s even a consideration then why are you looking at his bank account and wanting his mums gift.

look if you wish more money then you need to work full time. He’s not going to give it to you.

I’ve read all your responses but still can’t see any real reasons why you should leave? He is financially abusing and controlling you. The best thing you can do now is get as much evidence as you can and then file for divorce.

Ive been very naive i think. Our marriage has broken down but I have always trusted & believed he is a good human being with good morals & values. But putting this down in words & i do agree there is an element of financial control/abuse - im questioning that now.

If my child had told me they were having marital problems and were considering divorce, I'd positively encourage them to keep a separate pot of money that they didn't tell their partner about.

I can see this side & id do the same as a parent. He is fortunate to have a family who have the financial means to help if we did separate. I dont have that.

Is he just selfish with money and you or is there a meanness in every aspect of his life.
TBH I don’t like the sound of him. And I don’t like the way he’s treating you. There’s something very controlling about him.
I haven’t read all of the messages, but have you tried couples counselling or is that something you want to consider?

Ive suggested couples counselling & he has agreed, but done nothing about it - that would be for me to organise i expect, like everything else.

i always envisaged that we'd agree a divorce if it came to that

wasn’t your last thread about how your husband had sneakily started planning for a divorce without telling you?

He hadn't started planning, I read a note where he said he would get legal advice as "this is it" - or words to that effect.

Since then, we had spoken about things openly & things had improved, until I start questioning our finances & its a huge realisation that there's a huge disparity between us that is not right or fair.

@Bonmot57 If you have savings when the financial order is being discussed, these are matrimonial funds. They are not his and hers. Savings in individual names are not ring fenced and neither are pensions. £1500 isn’t a huge sum and it was in his bank account. He’s not hidden it in a new account the op has no idea exists. He might have these of course, but they are still matrimonial funds.

As for working part time: the op has two young dc. Why should she work full time and undoubtedly “do it all”? She’s contributing her share by looking after dc and this does not count against her should they divorce. It’s reasonable DH pays for household bills. Obviously if the op received money and would not have to tell DH either but he’s handed over bank details for the new mortgage so not quite sure how it’s hidden. He didn’t tell her but it’s not in a hidden divorce account. My DHs work partner opened his accounts via the office address. Wife had no idea but they were all discovered upon divorce and they were not £1500 either!

I appreicate the replies, some are very brutally honest & not easy to read i must say. I guess that as some have suggested, it could be money given to him for divorce proceedings, i always envisaged that we'd agree a divorce if it came to that as we have been open in conversations about it. I'd never blindside him but maybe thats my naivity/misunderstanding.

Things have certainly improved since my rants on here in spring, we were in an awful place which i dont feel we are now - but there is financial disparity which I struggle to accept. It isnt easy to divorce as some can so easily throw out on here, there is so much to consider.

For context & those who are saying i snooped, i didnt - we remortgaged & had to send bank statements to our advisor & I looked at his as was cc'd in, the money was sent to his own account.

Yes, It's not easy to divorce. It should be the last option. But you should still be educated and informed of your rights to protect yourself preemptively. Hence consulting an attorney.

Good luck!
