Sintra Lisbon

Going to Lisbon next week with the family and would like to visit Sintra. I’ve seen it recommended on Mumsnet and wondered if it’s better to book through a tour operator or can we just take the train from Lisbon. Any recommendations please?

It was about 5 years ago but we took the train and then a bus up and down. It was very easy (and lovely).

We went last year on the train from Lisbon, it was very easy. When you get there you can get a bus which takes you up to all of the interesting places and back; however there are loads of touts at the train station trying to get you to get a taxi, just ignore them. It’s a lovely place to visit 😊

Thanks for the info. I’ve been looking at guided tours which start at £70 that I think some of our party would find too expensive. It’s also a whole day which I would probably find too long although it includes other places too. It was only by reading Mumsnet that I wondered if it was possible to do under our own steam. Thanks so much again and the weather’s looks good there next week.

We just took the train. I think we walked, but it was so long ago I can't remember.

One thing I remember was how much cooler Sintra was as it is much higher up than Lisbon. I remember thinking that I wished I had taken a jumper/cardigan with me.

Done it twice by train.
With kids in tow we only managed to see one of the sights.
The other time we saw everything but walked 12 miles we estimated

Get a train to Sintra and you can walk up to the castle / grounds. We got a taxi up, it wasn't that expensive but I was heavily pregnant at the time so I genuinely couldn't be bothered walking uphill.

It is much more expensive than Lisbon for the likes of food & drink though. If you can eat down the side streets or on the walk to the castle as its cheaper than in the Square.

Well worth the day trip though!
