So upset and confused

I’ve nc for this

Mum of two boys. I’m not with their dad. One 19 who has moved out, but still relies for financial support if needed and one 16 who is still at school and lives at home.

The older one told me he’s on the work course this week. He keeps in regular contact with me and his brother and called yesterday just for a chat. I was talking to him about the course etc and something felt a little odd. I couldn’t put my finger on it.
The older one shares his location with his brother. They get on really well and are always in contact. I tried to call my older one this morning and I couldn’t get through. I needed to speak to him about something quite important so after trying several times and leaving messages, I asked my younger one to check his location to check he can see where he was. I don’t ever usually do this. I trust them both and I’ve never felt I need to check locations unless I’m worried for their safety.

my younger one looked a little surprised when looking at his phone and then said he’s at home. I said are you sure, please don’t lie to me as I’m really worried about him. After some time he said he was at the airport! I said he can’t be because he was catching a train this morning and the course is only about an hour from where he lives.

We were only on holiday a few weeks ago and most of his stuff is still here, but I went up to check for his passport and it’s missing. I am upset and confused. I have always encouraged them to be independent, if he had told me he was going away, I would have been happy for him and given him some safety tips and reminded him to look after himself because he’s never travelled abroad without family before. I can’t get my head around why he would lie.
I don’t want to ask him because I don’t want him to fall out with his brother, but I’m also really worried because he’s in a foreign country and I don’t even know if he’s taken out bloody travel insurance. I don’t even know why I’m posting. I usually post to ask for advice. This is completely out of my hands and I can’t do anything about it, apart from pray he returns safely

I think your diagnosis is causing you to think the worst. Your DS will be fine, in an emergency there wouldn't be anything you could do, whether it happened in Liverpool, Southampton or Dusseldorf, so please try not to worry. I think you are trying to difuse your own stress by putting it into another situation.

Concentrate on yourself. You've got enough to think about over the next few months without worrying about your (young) adult son, let him take care of himself. And good luck with your treatment.

HambleTheDoll · Yesterday 18:12

He might have had his phone stolen. I’d message him. I never ever share travel details with family though. That’s a bit odd that you do

Thank you for the posters who have tried to understand my point of views

Yes I will just ask my other son to check in a few days so at least I know where he is.

for the poster who asked why the younger one first chose to lie to me. He’s seen me lie down quite a lot this week and has noticed I’m not well. As I said earlier, I’ve not been well.

Ive told him I’m feeling run down and when I asked why he lied to me at first, he said it was because im not well so he didn’t want to add anything to my plate. I’ve not been myself this week and he’s picked up on it.

The truth is I’ve had a cancer diagnosis this week, I haven’t shared this with anyone yet. Not anyone.

I need to get my head around this news before I can share with work and my family and the boys’ dad

I know this has nothing to do with me feeling the way I’ve reacted but maybe I’m not thinking logically and feeling more emotional than I usually would

Train and plane rhyme, you could easily misshear one for the other. No ones getting from Southampton to Liverpool in an hour, unless they're travelling by plane instead of train.

Foughties · Yesterday 17:33

I would definitely check his location to see where he is!

upsetmum8888 · Yesterday 17:14

@Myplantsmyrulesthank you for your reply.

Yes, I understand what you mean. He probably wouldn’t have listened to the advice I gave him and I hope that he has taken out insurance just in case if any issues, but I agree that he has to make his own decisions and I honestly do respect them.

I wrote my post in a panic and I’m extremely stressed and maybe even lonely at the moment. I haven’t tried to contact him and I also haven’t asked my younger one to check his location. I’ll wait and hope he’s having a great time wherever he’s gone and that he returns safely

I'm sorry about your diagnosis.
I'm sure this is feeding into your concerns over your family.

I hope this makes you feel better but plenty of young people go abroad without tips on safety from their parents and also without insurance. And they make it back home absolutely fine.

Even if you had known beforehand, would he even had taken on board any tips or info you gave him? I suspect not.

He's spreading his wings, his way.

My dd went solo travelling a load of times and I worried every single time, but I understood it was her life and I had no right to have a day in any of it.

So my anxiety was my own issue to manage.

@DaftHapethhis course is in Liverpool. He said where he’s staying for the duration of the course, it will take him just under an hour to get to where he needs to be.
he lives in Southampton and his last location showed he was at Heathrow

Hope you find some answers soon.

blythet · Yesterday 13:20

Has he maybe had his phone stolen?? (Sorry about your diagnosis OP, and for the record I’d feel the same if I had a 19 yr old that done this)

DaftHapeth · Yesterday 13:12

He told me his course is in Liverpool. He lives in Southampton

I’m confused about your above two statements @upsetmum8888 .

Was he at Southampton airport or somewhere else?

So was his course an hour away or in Liverpool?

Foughties · Yesterday 09:20

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I hope you get to the bottom of things with your son.

Thank you for your replies.

I genuinely wouldn’t have had a problem with it. I very rarely lose my temper as my parents were really strict when I was younger and I’ve always tried to be open minded with my kids.

If his dad finds out he will absolutely hit the roof. It will become a huge problem within our family. I can’t tell him so now I’ve been left with all this worry and I can’t even talk to anyone about it, apart from on here. I don’t want his brother to think he’s done something wrong by telling me the truth. The only reason he was asked to check location was because I couldn’t get hold of him and I was worried about how he sounded last night.

he’s not on Facebook so won’t be posting on there.

Why will his dad "hit the roof " ?

upsetmum8888 · 05/09/2026 19:18

@DaftHapethhe was at Heathrow airport. So he could have been going anywhere. When I asked him how he was getting to the course, he said by train

DaisyGivemeyouranswer · 05/09/2026 18:59

Honestly, you can tell that some of you haven't had a 19 year old son!

Yes, he's an adult, over 18, could have fought in the war etc etc... but it's bloody scary and worrying when they first start doing stuff like this. Especially if they've kept it a secret 🙄🤣

All 4 of ours are older now, but letting go like this is one of the hardest parts of parenting, imo.

comeoncolleen · 05/09/2026 18:41

It will probably be fine, OP. Families don't always share plans and sometimes young people want a taste of doing something without their parents knowledge. Hopefully he'll be back soon, and meanwhile his brother can see where he is.

Dilemma999 · 05/09/2026 18:38

It’s sad he’s lied to you (if he has). Maybe explore that with him face to face in confidence.

You could always ask his brother to check his location again in a couple of days so you know what country he’s in at least.

marmitegirl01 · 05/09/2026 18:37

I’m sorry you are worried. I think that’s the normal reaction rather than those saying you are over reacting and he’s grown. This is the same forum that if you ask what age is it ok to leave a child home alone , some posters will say they’ve never left their 16yr old on their own, to go food shopping. Or - no you cannot leave a 17yr old home alone overnight!!
I hope you hear from him soon xx

But she’s made it clear why she’s not interfering. She’s left a message but doesn’t want to break her younger son’s trust to dob him in for tracking his brother.

You can be worried but also be aware of boundaries and unsure when and where and why they should be broken.

I know there’s been many times in my life where I’ve wk deemed how to do right for doing wrong.

There is no 'dobbing in'.

She told her 16 year old to track him and so she can tell the 19 year old that.

The OP is just creating another problem by not doing that.

The 16 year old has done nothing wrong and I'm sure his brother will see that, especially as the OP says they're close.

itsgettingweird · 05/09/2026 18:11

ShitFacedShakespeare · 05/09/2026 17:42

Not as odd as the OP turning to Mumsnet instead of asking her son what he's up to.

But she’s made it clear why she’s not interfering. She’s left a message but doesn’t want to break her younger son’s trust to dob him in for tracking his brother.

ShitFacedShakespeare · 05/09/2026 18:10

You need to ask yourself why he deliberately kept it from you and why his brother felt the need to lie to you.

But ask yourself honestly.

Daygloboo · 05/09/2026 18:07

Redrosesposies · 05/09/2026 17:29

With this sort of overreaction from his parents it's no wonder he's decided not to tell you.
He's 19. He's an adult. He doesn't live at home. He really doesn't have to tell you what he's doing.
Why will it be such a massive thing when his Dad finds out?
It's probably about time you both backed off and let him grow up.

Oh have a heart. He's only 19 and the woman's worried. Gove it a rest will you. 19 isnt an adult. 19 is a twit.

upsetmum8888 · 05/09/2026 18:05

Thank you to everyone who have shared their thoughts. Maybe I’m overthinking and overreacting.

I don’t want to contact his dad and tell him as I don’t want him contacting him to have a go for not saying anything. He’s quite protective and I understand he didn’t want to tell his dad. I’m the total opposite when it comes to reacting to stuff. I would not have been bothered. His dad has a new partner and a new life. If my children tell me stuff and ask me not to share it with their dad, I don’t and they know this.

I’m more concerned because he’s gone without mentioning anything. But maybe he doesn’t trust me. I won’t contact him and I assume that he won’t contact me until he wants something. I’m not creating barriers to create dramas. I have serious health problems right now and I don’t need a family fall out about a holiday. I need to stay well for my family, especially my younger one, so I can at least help him move away and be as independent as his older brother.

I only posted because I would have expected families to share holiday plans with each other, but it seems I’ve incorrectly assumed that.

He told me his course is in Liverpool. He lives in Southampton, so I haven’t misunderstood the location of the course.

OP posts:
canklesmctacotits · 05/09/2026 17:54

It’s not the going abroad that’s the problem - he’s 19, he’s quite capable. It’s deliberately keeping this from his mother with whom he spoke at length last night. That’s not an oversight, it’s a choice.

I don’t think you need to worry overly, statistically nothing terrible will happen to him. Don’t say anything further. See what happens when he gets back and if/when he mentions it. If he never does, you’ll have learned something about him - but then you have to be extra vigilant about the rest of his life. In all likelihood it’s a lads’ trip of the sort you don’t appreciate. That wouldn’t be a terrible outcome. But it could be something else entirely, something more concerning. Keep an eye out for company he’s keeping, money he’s spending, ideas he’s spewing.

Another huge issue is whether or not you tell his dad. To know your joint son has behaved so out of character AND know that his dad would go ballistic, and not tell him…I don’t know that I could keep that secret. Maybe you can enlist his dad is keeping a watchful eye on him?
