Bit upset about Parkrun experience today

I want to preface this by saying I love parkrun, the inclusivity, community and encouragement and I suppose that's why this morning has upset me in the way it has!

I'm not new to parkrun but have had a long hiatus due to illness/injury, so in the last few weeks I've been going and walking it. I feel silly for feeling a need to quantify my speed because it shouldn't matter how fast/slow you are but I walk it in around 45 minutes, so I'm not ambling! When I've volunteered as tailwalker some people have finished in up to 1h15 and I've never minded, I'm happy they've come to join in and have either chatted with them as we walk together, or remained at a respectful distance mirroring their pace.

Today there were fewer walkers than usual and I was last from the start, other than two tailwalkers. They were walking so close behind me it felt really aggressive and it was pushing me to go faster (they were walking within 2 - 3ft of me, pretty much on my heels). On a couple of occasions I slowed down a bit and they actually overtook me before dropping back. They definitely knew I was taking part as they had asked me. I had my headphones on so they maybe thought I couldn't hear but they also made comments like 'I NORMALLY walk quite fast' and towards the end 'we're not going to finish in under 45 minutes now' which made me feel bad. At the end we had to actively find the person handing out finish tokens as they were off packing stuff away.

I know I should have said something, but I didn't know how to politely say 'stop walking so close and aggressively behind me' so I didn't.

I know it's volunteers (I have volunteered plenty myself) but would it be inappropriate to raise my experience? I feel I want to give some feedback to stop other people being put off going - if today had been my first time I definitely wouldn't be going again, as I felt so unwelcome.

Any thoughts welcome!

I know nothing about Parkrun, but raising it with the organisers sounds perfectly reasonable if the ethos is inclusivity and that walkers of all speeds are fully as welcome and accommodated as runners.

KvotheTheBloodless · 05/09/2026 13:54

I would definitely email, but phrase it in a kind way because they will have been volunteers. Make it clear you're grateful for their service, but suggest that they hang back a bit when sweeping/tailwalking, because it can make people feel rushed and bad about being slow, which is not what Parkrun is about.

Booksandwine80 · 05/09/2026 14:00

Parkrun is full of competitive arse holes these days. I gave up as a volunteer’s child made a loud comment about how slow I was and I was nearly taken out by the crazy speed freaks who will barge you out of the way for a PB.

Munchie1965 · 05/09/2026 14:12

I would say that 45 minutes is reasonable. Taking say over an hour to get around is unfair on the volunteers.

That's not the actual message, though is it.

I've never done adult Park Run, because my ABSOLUTE fastest 5k has been 43 minutes and that's after months of training. And I've feared being in OP's position, despite all the inclusive messaging.

I suppose this is my point. Either walkers are welcome or they aren't. What they are saying and doing on this occasion hasn't lined up at all. All the Parkruns locally to me have people finishing in 1 hour plus - if walkers are welcome and you don't want to be there for more than say 30 minutes then I can't help but think you shouldn't volunteer to be the tailwalker, it's not compulsory!

Definitely email the event organiser. I've been the tailwalker before and over an hour is expected. This is very much against the ethos - they shouldn't be tailwalkers.

It’s a good job you aren’t in charge of parkrun. Parkrun is for everyone. Except annoying competitive arseholes and people who want to exclude people.

Clumsykitten · 05/09/2026 14:30

I would email, very politely, to explain what happened. I think the comments are just as bad as the tailgating, which may just be them being a bit inept.

Don’t stop going to parkrun, please, we have loads of finishers 45 mins plus at my local.

WarmHare · 05/09/2026 14:32

Definitely contact the organisers, volunteers are kind for giving up their time however if this is their behaviour then it really doesn’t mesh with ethos of Park Run.

ExpertlyDecluttering · 05/09/2026 14:33

Around an hour is normal for the ones I participate in. When I tail walk we tend to keep 100m or so back from the last walkers unless they drop back to chat and walk with us. I would email in but keep it constructive. They should be ready with the finish tokens until the tailwalkers are through as well.

Thanks. I won't stop going! I previously have gone to a different local one more than this one that I've been to recently, so I might just go back to the other one for a while.

There were also trying to get me to run at the end to get in under time, counting down the seconds etc which maybe they thought was encouraging but I felt really embarrassed. I also hadn't run any of it so clearly didn't intend to!

I think I will send a kind email..I don't want to be rude or upset anyone, I just don't want others to be put off that the reality isn't matching the ethos. @KvotheTheBloodless thank you for your comment that has helped me to think about how I could phrase an email!

Its not just the tail walkers though is it. Its the whole volunteering team that are impacted. Someone has to record the time, issue the barcode and do the barcode scanning. In addition to marshalling and taking down the funnel etc.

It all depends on what people feel is reasonable.

When I volunteer I want to be finishing up and maybe going for a coffee after an hour or so. Much longer than that and I would reconsider volunteering.

MiddleAgedDread · 05/09/2026 14:41

Email the event and explain how uncomfortable you felt and the comments. The overtaking in particular is totally unacceptable. You shouldn’t sign up to tail walk if you’re bothered about your pace!

The reality is that the vast majority of people who do Park Run are competitive on some level. Even if you are just competing with yourself.

Most of us would not do it if they did not record times and give all of the stats to do with PBs, age grading and gender positioning etc. Without the competitive element there would be no point in doing Park run no matter what head office says.

Please stop volunteering if you can’t be bothered to wait for everyone to finish. Or pick a role that won’t keep you from your coffee. You do not subscribe to the parkrun values and you are making the event less inclusive with your attitude and actions.

This is fair, I was thinking specifically of the tailwalkers given their comments in this instance and I do appreciate the time given up by volunteers. But i also don't think it should be advertised as open to all and that walkers are welcome if they aren't. In that case they should state that you need to be able to complete the course in 40 minutes or whatever which would be fine and I wouldn't attend! I don't think it's fair to say walkers welcome if they really mean you can come and walk if you want but volunteers will be fed up with you for being too slow! Obviously it needs volunteers to run (ha) but giving up an extra bit of time to keep it inclusive doesn't feel unreasonable to me - again if you're in a rush then you don't have to volunteer.

I've not always been in this position, I previously was able to complete it at a very average running speed 30 minutes ish pre illness. So maybe I should stop going until I can run it again.

Ah, but this is where I carefully distinguished my comments. It’s only competitive arseholes who are the problem, not competitive people. Plenty of competitive people including major event winners I can think of who don’t feel the need to denigrate others or push them off the course.

ItsOnlyMee1 · 05/09/2026 14:52

Park runs are busy. If you do not like being in proximity then walk alone some place else.

I don't really get why people turn up to walk in a crowd for 5km. It makes sense if you are running to have other people pushing you. But turning up to walk 5km in 45 mins? What's the point?

For many people, including the poster, their health or injury is currently preventing them from running. For many people brisk walking is a lot of effort. For many people, they have a community through parkrun.

None of them deserved to be harried or made to feel like the problem. When and if you are in charge of parkrun, you can try to change the rules, but there’s a lot of us who prefer the ethos as it is, thanks!

Sounds like one of today’s tailwalkers found the thread,

MummyWillow1 · 05/09/2026 14:57

45 mins isn’t long to walk 5k. My running time is 38 mins 🤣

I would pop the organiser a friendly email and provide constructive feedback.

And you are the problem and why Parkrun is becoming less inclusive.

Absolute arseholes thinking they own the course.
