Lindsay Clancy, what do we all think? Pure evil or mentally ill?

I want to know how society is served by putting her in prison? I think we are all safer if she spends time in an environment where she can get serious mental health treatment.

EasternStandard · 04/09/2026 21:50

It’s just awful to consider what happened to the children. The one person who is meant to protect them did the opposite. Those poor dc.

Just beyond thinking about really.

There are no inconsistencies. There is no evidence needed to prove her guilt because the evidence has already been examined. We won’t see it in court because it’s not needed.

She decided she was going to kill herself and she was taking the children with her. She also wanted PC to find her, hence the timings.

Im not sure why these three children’s lives mean so little that their murderer receives so much support. I want her found guilty. I don’t really care what happens to her after that.

And what do you think prison will achieve that a secure psychiatric hospital would not?

There have been a few cases like this in this country and they’re generally found to be manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. And then subject to a hospital order.

Apparently yes, but many, many inconsistencies in what happened, how it happened etc etc

I know everyone reacts differently to grief, but who goes hiking three weeks after their three children are murdered and writes a review complaining about a 17 dollar fee? Hiking yes, clear your head, find peace with nature, but a review and a complaint? He was also with the woman he is now married too.

That’s just one example of his very strange behaviour. In my opinion.

What makes you think he was with the woman he subsequently went on to marry while on that hiking trip? Be specific.

Orangebadger · 04/09/2026 21:45

@XelaM no not all child murderers are insane. I don’t know why people have to generalise about this. It’s a specific case not a global analysis of child murderers!!

funkyhousehill · 04/09/2026 21:44

A friend of mine had PPP and looking back (now she is well), she can remember it with chilling clarity. She ‘knew’ that she had to kill her newborn but just needed the right time. Thankfully her health visitor knew something was badly wrong and my friend was sectioned. She’s now fully recovered but I can absolutely see how Lindsay Clancy could have wholeheartedly believed she was doing the right thing, while in the grip of PPP.

Well the trial has collapsed as the jury could not agree, so it's not just observers who are not sure. One juror refused to go along with the other 11 apparently, but we don't know if the 11 found her G or NG.

Anyhow I believe she was very ill. Planning this was not impossible in the throes of psychosis.

There was a case in Ireland recently where the mother, also a nurse killed her three children. She was found not guilty but insane and is being held in secure psychiatric prison/hospital. It was a horribly similar case.

That case is freakishly similar. Same date and initials of kids.

I also cannot imagine being unable to tell the difference between family annihilators and women with post-natal psychosis. Genuinely.

How do you know she had this mystical psychosis and Chris Watts didn't? Their cool level-headed pre-planned murders of their children one by one (in front of each other) were very similar indeed. She's also going to trial defending herself rather than wanting to die like most normal people would after killing their own kids. Why is Chris Watts not considered mentally ill? I mean, he clearly is by anyone's standards.

As has been said, speak to anyone who has been in/worked in a psych setting. People in psychosis usually seem very flat and calm and it's only once you get them talking that you realise they are completely and detatched from reality.

But that isn't really addressing the specifics of this case is it? A voice in her head told her to do it. That is what she said. She may have been sleep deprived sure, and flat as you say, and depressed, but that isn't what she is defending herself on. Its the pyschosis. And this bit really really matters - because that is her defence. And I don't believe it. Why would the voice only appear for 18 minutes? Why not before or since? What other evidence is there that she had psychosis other then her claiming this as a defence for murdering her children? She was pretty vocal about being unwell, and switching to 13 different medications, but the voices were strangely absent.

The term evil has no place in a court of law, it’s supernatural terminology and implies that horrific acts are part of that persons intrinsic nature and gets rid of their culpability.

we use the terminology to make us feel more comfortable that there was something so deeply ‘wrong’ with that person that they could never be us ‘normal’ people. Lindsay wasn’t ‘evil’ she’s a human.

Ok, my view, yes she is evil. This does exist, I do believe some people are evil! Whether or not she had a mental illness or psychosis (unlikely as baby was 8 months old) doesn't mean she is one or the other. She killed her children in the most violent way.

This. I remember after having my child (which was an emergency c-section after a long labour) I didn’t sleep for 3 nights after surgery because my DH wasn’t allowed to stay and my baby was cluster feeding at my breast. I remember hallucinating on the last night and I thought I saw a midwife that wasn’t there. I ended up shining my phone light in my eyes just to try and stay awake so that I didn’t drop my baby. I think as well as extreme sleep deprivation I also suffered from PTSD after my section as there were many nights afterwards where I experienced sleep paralysis and heard voices. I remember one night I woke up and I swore I heard someone say ‘aww baby, baby’ and I was struck with fear and shook my husband awake and said to turn the light on so I could check that the baby was ok as I thought someone was in the room. I believed it was real and I was too scared for my baby to be in that room without me being there. It was terrifying. But I was totally functional during the day so nobody would’ve known. I don’t believe it was postpartum psychosis but I do believe it was the result of PTSD and sleep deprivation and that was scary enough.

I had a similar thing. C section, no proper sleep for almost 3 days and started hallucinating when I got home at night. Second baby I went home the next day. was so much better!
I can’t even begin to imagine what she could have experienced with all of the symptoms and meds

if You can’t relate to what the women are saying they see in her story then consider yourself very fortunate.

i sadly can.

to regale you with a few stories from my own life. I had severe ante natal anxiety with my first baby, im talking about not sleeping, spiralling etc, there were a few medical scares, i was being bullied at work and i come from an abusive home, it caused my child to be born small. I referred myself to the local therapies, they rejected me because I was too articulate. So background of worrying. Unbeknownst to me she has tongue tie and I was consumed with the need to breastfeed but because she was unable to, she didn’t sleep, so for close to 3 months I survived on 2 hours sleep a day. I manage to get referred to the peri natal mental health team, they came to visit and I explicitly told them I don’t feel safe, and I was having thoughts of ending my own life, and even when I lay down to sleep I couldn’t, the room what shake and I wasn’t sure what was real anymore (I was starting to have micro sleeps where the brain starts to basically shut off). My husband knew, but was working so needed his sleep too. I told my parents. I told the health visitors and the GP but everyone was so busy affirming me they didn’t listen to a word I said.

in my most recent pregnancy knowing how low I felt post partum after my first and keen to get support I got referred again, was told no, reach out to us again if you’re at crisis point, and there are plenty of online resources. So basically either google it or you’re ready to take a life.

whilst I never became dangerous, I fundamentally believed I was a risk, and tbh rightly so, because I was so sleep deprived I was hallucinating.

I am really sorry to hear this. 💐

So then what does psychosis actually mean? Because Lindsay Clancy says its a male voice in her head telling her to kill her children, which just happened to come on for the duration of time she killed her children, 18 minutes, and her words are that it hasn't happened before or since. This is what the case essentially rests on. The expert psychologist in court said that this would be very very unusual pattern of pscychosis. In other words, he thinks she is lying. And so do I.

This 💯

Patients suffering from psychosis often conceal, mask, or fail to recognise command hallucinations and delusions until after a psychotic crisis occurs.

LC complained of "intrusive thoughts" prior to the event which were potentially early, unaddressed stages of psychosis.

Orangebadger · 04/09/2026 21:32

I have come across post Partum psychosis twice and it’s a mental health emergency, you code it when it presents in A&E as the nature of it is that the psychosis can cause the death of the baby. And the women as clear as we may look at the sky and know it’s blue, they believe they are doing the right thing. We are not meant to comprehend this state as it’s absolutely terrifying when you see it. It takes a very vigilant supportive family and a good health service that responds to emergencies to manage this. And it can be treated, ideally in a supported mother and baby unit.

I have also known a patient who did kill her own baby during an awful post partum psychosis and as she was in the UK and received a diagnosis and MH treatment she was never put on trial.

The reality is that this is very very rare and very scary for all involved as it’s exactly the welfare of the child/ children as well as the women that are at the heart of it.

I think I just can't imagine not understanding how psychosis works. I don't understand how so many people are unable to grasp the concept of psychosis. Of course someone in active psychosis can plan things/conceal things in accordance with their delusions, whilst completely detached from reality.

So yes they literally have been sick.

So ANY child murder can be excused because all perpetrators who kill kids are all mentally ill.

She sent her husband out on a fool's errand-an errand that she had earlier timed by looking it up on her phone.

She then led her her three children down into the basement.

Were they frightened at this stage or had she told them they were going to play a game or look for something?

She took the first child, while the other two looked on and strangled the child with an exercise band.

The child must have been terrified, begging and she carried on while the cries of the two children who were waiting their turn to be murdered, cried and screamed .

When she had finished and knew the child was dead, she moved on to the second child and, with an exercise band, strangled the child.

She then took the terrified third child and strangled them with an exercise band.

All this shit about about whether she was evil or mad. She may have been both.

It doesn't matter a shit and, if it is found to matter a shit, then a lot more women and children will die at the hands of men who offer up the same defence.

I find it interesting that she is in court trying to defend herself.

I, and I imagine many many mothers who, if they had done this evil act, would have no interest in defending themselves; would just want to either die or wouldn't care about the rest of their life.

She does.

She is a cunt. An evil cunt. She may be a mad, evil cunt but cunt is what she is and I wouldn't give a toss if her arse was introduced to the electric chair and, if she is repentant, nor should she!

Edited

THIS!!!! How is she different to Chris Watts?!?

Of course anyone who kills their kids is also mentally ill, but that means ANY child killing can be excused through mental illness?!? Apart from being mentally ill, she's also FUCKING EVIL and a MURDERER!!!!

I find it quite terrifying how many people are defending her. What the actual fuck?!
