Do I confess my feelings to my boss before moving to the other side of the world?

I’ve fallen in love with my boss. We are both 28. He’s not technically my line manager, but he’s one of two team leaders, so there is obviously still a work dynamic there.

I’ve genuinely never felt like this about anyone before. We’ve grown really close over the last few months and hang out outside of work sometimes, just the two of us. Nothing has actually happened and it’s all been platonic, but I feel like there is something between us.

I think he likes me too, but obviously I can’t know for sure.

There have been enough moments/signs that make me think I’m not imagining it, but I also know when you really like someone you can read into things.

My feeling is that if it is mutual, we’ve both probably avoided actually doing anything about it because 1) we work together, 2) he’s in a more senior position, and 3) neither of us wants to risk rejection and then have to see each other at work afterwards.

Which brings me to the problem.

I’ve been offered a job in Australia, starting in the New Year.

If he wasn’t in the picture, this would already be a huge life decision, but now I feel completely torn.

Part of me thinks I should just take the opportunity, go to Australia and accept that the timing with him was wrong. I also know that realistically pursuing something while I’m still working with him could get complicated.

But I keep imagining myself sitting on the flight wondering whether I’ve just walked away from someone I could have had something really special with because neither of us was brave enough to say anything. As I said earlier, I’ve literally never felt this way before.

At the same time, the idea of confessing how I feel terrifies me. If I’ve completely misread him, I’ve potentially made our friendship and working relationship awkward right before I leave.

Would you tell him before deciding?

I would go to Australia for 6 months such a great opportunity. You can always come back if it doesn't work out. Not sure what to say about your manager though. Its a tough one.

WilliamWilliamItWasReally · 04/09/2026 21:27

How legally are you able to work in Australia?

Currently it is six months fixed term. If I enjoy it/they like me they will sponsor a skilled visa for me.

With this in mind I think you should go to Australia. I’d just tell him you plan to go to Australia for six months but will miss him while you are away. You mention in an update that he asked you out but you made a joke of it. I’d just say ‘hopefully you’ll take me on that date before I go’ and see what he does.

I am in two minds over the job. On paper it is a fantastic opportunity but I’m afraid about moving so far away, and all alone. I’m very introverted and concerned I’ll be lonely. But the opportunity is a huge one.

Have you thought of sounding out to him that you've been offered a job in Australia and see if he shows his hand first.

Edit sorry just seen he knows.
Maybe quiz playfully if he'd miss you if you went.

My dad did this stayed for my mum. It was an unhappy marriage. He would have been better off going Australia and her with someone else.

tellmesomethingtrue · 04/09/2026 20:56

Definitely take the job opportunity.

woollybean · 04/09/2026 20:55

I have been in the same situation and I told him…..we’ve been together for nearly 30 years now.

SaucerandCup · 04/09/2026 20:54

Take the job. If this bloke is meant to be it will happen! Don't give up working in Australia for a bloke, whatever you do. Doesn’t have to be forever out there if you don’t like it out there. Chances are it will be great though!

UnderatedCrispButty · 04/09/2026 20:49

Please don’t give up the most amazing opportunity for something that may not work out. Take the job, confess your feelings and then if it’s meant to be he will come out to Australia too!

Calliopespa · 04/09/2026 20:43

Tel12 · 03/09/2026 14:52

No, don't do anything. If he wanted to he would.

I would normally say this too, but in this circumstance I actually think being her senior does make it potentially an abuse of power and he might well be less likely to say anything because of that.

I think the Australia option makes this an ideal opportunity for you to say something op. I can imagine it might come naturally out a conversation raising the offer you have.

PRFarm · 04/09/2026 20:34

Confess how you feel and if it goes badly go to Australia knowing you at least shot your shot? You miss all the chances you don't take. Win win at least you'd know for certain.

WildFatball · 04/09/2026 20:30

Huh? This thread doesn't make any sense. He has asked you in a date, you are going on lots of dates every week and he knows about the job in Australia and is advising you not to take it. What exactly is the conflict?

Wieralmostthere · 04/09/2026 20:28

Does he know you’ve been offered the Aus job?

Ilovemsrachel · 04/09/2026 20:28

Get drunk with him on premise of asking his advice because you’re torn over the job offer and want his advice.

You will know either way by the end of the evening.

CharlieBoo · 04/09/2026 20:21

Life’s too short.. tell him!!! And report back!

katepilar · 04/09/2026 20:20

I dont get why you left out in your OP that he asked you out. It changes the whole situation quite a bit.
Ask yourself what is the real reason you are scared to tell him.
I feel like he is being very respectful for not pushing anything more intimate into the nights out you have together.

Grasshopperhopping · 04/09/2026 20:19

20 years from now you will regret the things you don’t do more than the things you do do.

Why did you apply for the job? Is it an internal company move? Something drew you to it

katepilar · 04/09/2026 20:03

EweCee · 03/09/2026 18:12

Take the job. Its a 6 month adventure. If he already knows and hasn't said anything I don't think he feels the same way you do. However, I would put my big girl pants on, tell him you've accepted the role for 6 months and also tell him you have feelings. If he feels the same you'd like to explore in 6 months.

He did say something, though. He asked her out on on a date.

scaredaboutwork · 03/09/2026 15:18

He’s actually a Kiwi who used to live in Australia!

There is your answer. New Zealand is the most beautiful country on Earth, gem up on it stat!

Tell him your feelings and suggest he moves back and take job in OZ, then move over the NZ!!😁

C0mm0nsense · 04/09/2026 20:00

Always better to regret things you did do rather than regret things you never tried. You might be walking away from the guy of your dreams. Ok, I’m a hopeless romantic but if it doesn’t work out you can literally escape to the other side of the world. If it does work out…this is a good problem to have 🥰

I say tell him and I have everything crossed for you.

XiCi · 04/09/2026 19:57

So let me get this straight. You fancy this guy, you had been spending time together outside work and he asks you out. You laugh at him and turn him down . Leaving aside why you would possibly do this (and not mention it to him again, even though you want to go out with him) why are you on here asking if you should tell him you like him? You already know he likes you, he asked you out. So all you need to do is ask if he meant it when he asked you out and if yes you can tell him . I mean its hardly fucking rocket science stuff is it. Sounds a really simple situation. Unless your instincts were right about initially turning him down and your now clinging to this little potential love story to give you an excuse not to go to Australia. I mean its scary emigrating to the other side of the world on your own isn't it, and this would be a great excuse not to go and be able to save face. I dont believe for a second you wouldn't have got together by now if you both wanted to.

BuildingAccess · 04/09/2026 19:55

You should seriously consider the opportunity if you want to progress your career.

These dates you are going on seem a bit strange. You are both out socially but no romantic interest from him? I think you have your answer, that he enjoys your company but he’s not interested as a romantic partner.

Startrekkeruniverse · 04/09/2026 19:50

100% tell him! No brainer.

FlipFlopVibe · 04/09/2026 19:49

Lonleyfox · 04/09/2026 19:47

Why not initially just tell him you have been offered a job abroad and you are considering the offer because it's a good offer. His reaction will probably give you enough information to gauge whether to divulge anything further

He already knows she’s been offered a job, OP updated
