Just that really had enough, the last 6 years have been hell, he’s disrespectful, rude, always threatens to put me on my ass, doesn’t listen to me, do as he is told, eats all the food and has no care about anyone else, he doesn’t go to school is home tutored twice a week. He has ADHD but I’m just done with it all, he refuses his meds, won’t go to his appointments, sleeps all day and is awake all night. I tried putting rules and boundaries in place and he constantly pushes them, he’s a bad influence on his siblings they are becoming like him and I’m a single mum and really struggling. He doesn’t go out, doesn’t want to do anything but play games all day every day, he spends money on my card for his games without my permission, I’ve had this for the last 6 years and I just can’t do it anymore, he is affecting my mental health and I’m constantly exhausted, he kicks off and smashes things, he tries to over power my parenting when I try and tell his siblings off or put rules in place. I don’t want him here anymore. What do I do? How do I get him out? I’m actually scared he’s going to hit me and then his siblings think it’s ok, he’s already attacked me before. I feel like I have to walk on egg shells. This isn’t a life.

Do not comment if you haven’t got anything nice to say. This isn’t even the half of what I’ve had to put up with the last 6 years!!

Oh OP, I'm so sorry this is happening to you. My sister went through this 10 years ago, crying out for help and nobody did. In the end, after being attacked by my nephew, she rang the police and he was arrested. The police kept him in a cell overnight and my sister refused to have him back the next day. Cue hours of arguing over what to do with him - the NHS said that SS should take responsibility and SS wanted the NHS to look after him. He eventually got put into supported living and is now 25. My sister and two nieces are finally building a relationship with him and he is taking his meds and turning into a nice young man. He now has a job. Hormones and ADHD do not mix well and he has now settled. There is hope.

@Blackwidowsbite
It maybe worth contacting your EHCP caseworker to request a MDT meeting under safeguarding. The tuition company should also be completing a safeguarding referral to the LA. However, it does help to bring everyone together from all departments. I think a previous poster also provided advice on the wording for social care. The SEND team do have a safeguarding responsibility and it can prompt a quicker MDT meeting. The caseworker or their line manger will have greater access to internal LA staff. I do not like asking, this question and apologies if it makes you uncomfortable. Is there any sexualised behaviours that you are concerned about other than the homophobia you mentioned? If so, do feel you need to disclose here, I just wanted to make you aware there will be LA staff to support with this and it is another safeguarding matter that prompts action. You may also want to ask for a prevent referral. Speak with your younger children’s education placements also. The more pressure from different professionals, the sooner appropriate action for can take place.

I don’t have any practical advice and have seen others give really useful signposts for help but I did want to send you support and best wishes. My ADHD son changed dramatically during covid and it also coincided with hitting puberty. There are still holes in his walls where he threw a chair as he was so angry and disregulated. He also used my debit card for gaming without telling me etc. he does seem to have grown up and out of this but even for the short time it occurred I felt desperate and it was nowhere near the level of horror you are facing. I hope you can get the support you need for all in the family.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 03/09/2026 14:47

So sorry to hear you are having a difficult time - as a parent of a 21yo AuDHD child still living at home and who has pretty much tyrannised us for years I truly feel for you. I have actually ended up asking for an adult social care assessment via the GP to access a MH team, social care and social service support to facilitate eventually moving her into supported living accommodation, or just to alternative accommodation with social services and MH support. I think for a 16yo you can do similar but it’s called a Transition assessment or child social care assessment. I contacted the GP to see them on my own behalf and explained that the family was in crisis and that I couldn’t go on anymore. On the day I saw her I explained that I wasn’t suicidal but that I truly wished I was dead and could not take any more). GP was amazing and got the ball rolling.

I’ve framed it with DD as ‘getting specialised support for her MH/ND issues in order to support her into independence’ but not mentioned that I’d pack her bag tomorrow if I could. Strangely her behaviour has improved since the MH team assessment and knowing I have the ear of the GP and there are services incoming has really helped.

Can recommend contacting them to explore your options. I would also recommend contacting ADHDUK and also the NAS.org (if autism is part of the picture and this applies) and either speaking to their team or ask to be put in touch with a parent peer mentor? It really helps to talk (cry) with a parent who gets it and has walked part of the same journey in similarly ill-fitting shoes.

My mums friend went through this 2 years ago.

he son was doing drugs, bringing randoms in to their home, crime, out of control, attacking her and his siblings, breaking everything

After many, many, many warnings, and trying everything, she kicked him out and he went into like one of those foster/care homes? For young people?

he was never diagnosed with ADHD tho. Though they are now considering possibility of him having this she said.

I am sorry you are going through this <3

WimbleOfWombledon · 03/09/2026 14:44

Well done black widow, that sounds very positive. Also please do call the police every time he is abusive or violent to you or his siblings. To keep you all safe, so everything is logged and also doing this should hopefully bump your case further up SS list of priorities as well.

sometimes our kids don’t turn out the way we’d hoped - despite our best parenting efforts. Hopefully your whole family can get the support they need and things improve for you all xx

TheDenimPoet · 03/09/2026 14:42

My stepson behaved like this when he actually had an addiction to gaming. He may need more help than anyone currently realises.

His behaviour is obviously completely unacceptable, however it might be worth going to a professional and asking the question of whether this could be an issue for him.

I’ve spoken with the social today o have explained everything and they have forwarded my case and they should be in contact in due course. I have also done a referral for capa first response in regards to child to parent abuse also advised by his tutoring team. I am hoping I get help this time as I’ve told them everything. Thank you to everyone who gave me good advice and didn’t give me shit for wanting help in very shitty circumstances. To the people who blamed me and criticised my life choices and mistakes to make me feel shit about myself during a difficult situation I hope a bird shits on your head this afternoon. 🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻

Glad to see you’re keeping your sense of humour, OP, some people just love to pass judgement. Even more glad that it looks like you’ve got the ball rolling on getting the help you and your children need. I hope you get some good support out in place for all of you.

momtoboys · 03/09/2026 14:34

i have no advice but it seems like an awful situation. I'm sorry you are going through this.

Social don’t care. I’ve begged for help before with it all. Unless I’m sticking needles in my own arm and getting pissed up every night they don’t give a shit

Get in touch with who ever arranges the home tutor hours. Ask them for help or ask the tutor to refer your family to the LADO and let SS know that they have done so. None of you can live like this.

See … you read everything I wrote and your response was “yep, all my fault”. I was very clear that it’s not all your fault but of course you are partly to blame for the impact that YOUR actions and decisions have had on him. Do you really lack the introspection to see that? He is clearly angry, maybe it’s partly because he feels you fucked up his life and refuse to take even a tiny bit of responsibility!

Oh my goodness, the sheer hypocrisy of your post is mindblowing. You will not get someone to listen to you by attacking and insulting them. Do YOU really lack the introspection to see that?

That's good news @Blackwidowsbite you are doing all the right things, let's hope the s/services step up and continue to step up for you.

ShortLoveStoryset · 03/09/2026 14:19

Look to the future - all the family need to be happy and the current situation isn’t allowing that to happen.

Too many people here speak only from their own limited life experience and project how they feel about their own little darlings who do not behave in this terrible way and then criticise someone who is going through a hell they will never experience.

Ignore them.

I am a retired nurse and social worker. I have worked in community teams dealing with children and adults with learning disabilities, many of whom had extremely challenging behaviour.

My advice is this:

Find out the name of the head of child services in your area and write a letter to them making it very clear that you fear for your own safety, the safety of your other children and for your son’s mental and physical health.

Give examples of his aggression towards you, the theft, the vandalism, the influence on the younger children and the effect on the overall household.

Describe the effect on your health and the health of your younger children.

Describe how he interferes with and undermines your parenting of the younger children and the effect of this on their behaviour.

Specify your complete lack of support and isolation.

Point out that you are being left to deal with a young person who, if in any type of supported care, would be assessed as needing an entire team and quite possibly a 2:1 staffing ratio.

Describe how your son refuses help in the community such as CAHMS leading to them abandoning him and that he refuses to attend school.

Point out that at age 16 he is fast approaching adulthood and you, as a single woman with younger children, are being bullied, threatened, assaulted and effectively held hostage in your own home by this young man.

Tell them that after years of asking for help and getting nowhere they are now personally on notice that this is a tragedy waiting to happen.

Tell them that although you love your son you also fear him and you fear for your younger children and because of this you cannot continue to have your son living in your home.

After finding out other relevant names copy this letter to the chief constable of your area, the head of education, the head of CAHMS, your GP and your MP.

If you can possibly afford it, send all letters by registered post so they have to be signed for.

Also contact your nearest women’s refuge and speak to them about your fears for your safety. You won’t be the first woman to contact them who is frightened of a teenage son and they might be able to add some weight to wake up local services to your situation.

Best advice yet.

NCOneDayOnly · 03/09/2026 13:56

OP, at this stage, I would just let him game day and night if it means you don't have to deal with his violent and aggressive behaviour whilst you're trying to get some assistance from social care.

MsPrufrockk · 03/09/2026 13:55

Blackwidowsbite · 03/09/2026 11:05

I have explained the situation and where everything changed 6 years ago. If you go down the thread it’s there. It’s the fact his dad is a useless prick, then my break up with my husband and him leaving and then my narcissist ex, it’s kind of learnt behaviour in a way from the men that have been present in his life. He has no respect for women at all and is very sexist, racist and homophobic and I don’t even know why.

It's because of the content he's consuming on YouTube etc.

I'm sure if it was as easy as 'remove his devices', you would have done that already. I'm sorry, it sounds hell, and I agree the best outcome is him being removed from your home, as painful as that my be. I hope you find a way of doing that.

Blackwidowsbite · 03/09/2026 13:43

Millionhobbies · 03/09/2026 13:28

Honestly, people trying to shame you?! It's sickening. They've got no fucking clue!
Clearly, you have begged for help, and been repeatedly fobbed off, you and your son have been badly let down by the system designed to help. You have nothing to be ashamed of.
I also imagine that seeing him go, although will be some relief, will break your heart. I hope you have support around you.

Off course it will. It’s not an easy decision for any parent, I’ve put up with this as long as I have as I don’t want him thinking I’m also abandoning him but there comes a point where enough is enough and my other children’s safety is more important.

Sending love your way, it can be hard parenting teens like this, I have one and it's tough
Can I ask, have you ever heard of PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) it may be worth you looking this up. Autism and ADHD often go hand in hand and PDA is a set of traits that come under the autism spectrum which can lead to behaviour like you are describing. Interestingly 70 percent of children with PDA are unable to attend school check out the PDA society website, there's some webinars on there that are really good and also groups on Facebook for parents of children with PDA, see what you think, could it be a possibility?
I have two children with PDA one is very explosive but using the right parenting techniques can really make a big difference.

@Blackwidowsbite you sound like a million mums in your situation with a child with his complex profile. I think for your own sanity you should stop explaining and justifying yourself to the people here who have no grasp of the complexities of how neurodivergence and pda can manifest themselves.
you have proven that to withdraw WiFi has escalated things to an extreme. Rightly or wrongly, the computer is likely to be his only regulation tool at the moment, you need specialist support, not people ripping into you for choices you made 17 years ago, or because your child has a challenging presentation.
even if he didn’t move out, he needs at the very least someone like an OT, which could come from a care act assessment. If he has an EHCP then he clearly has needs which the local authority should ensure are being met at some level.
he is challenging and his needs are complex but they’re not by any stretch unusual, just too much for a mum and other children to deal with alone.
even if you did have a partner at home he might still be this challenging or he might not, but none of this is your fault.

Thank you. 🙏🏻

Take him to his dad's place and drive away without him. Make the deadbeat look after his son.

Very bad advice. She and her son both need help and dad isnt going to offer it. It will only make the situation worse.
