Dad's new date says two of her children are narcissists

my divorced dad is dating and went on a date with an attractive woman that went really well.

She said her ex was a narcissist and she doesn't speak to 2 of her 3 kids because they are also narcissists.

To be this is a red flag?

Does your dad not find it concerning? Maybe he’s not familiar with people calling everyone and their dog narcissists just because they don’t get along with them?

unfortunately some people actually ARE narcissists… but now that fact is lost in the crowd.

Massive red flag. People who usually go round saying others are narcissistic are usually the one who is the narcissist.

Agree.

She’s probably just learnt a new word 😂

yeah to me it was a red flag but I don't know how to explain that to my dad

You can’t really explain it to your dad. Its a very niche and sophisticated point. I would just say “its a shame she doesn’t get along with her own close family. That’s unusual. Does she have old friends and other people in her life or does she seem to fall out a lot.?”

Be careful not to trigger a latent desire in him to be her white knight snd rescue her from any hint if disapproval. Just keep open and curious about her but expressing gentle reserve.

Tell him to run. This is something my mother would tell people just because she is an evil woman who won't take accountability for her actions and two of her adult children have cut her off. She also blames our father for everything despite her leaving him and us as kids for another man.

Just mention to him to be careful, don't rush it and really get to know her before rushing into moving together etc. She will start showing her true colours when she gets comfortable with him. I'd also mention the fact she said that on a first date is making you wary.

You won't get him to see what he doesn't want to see. All you can do is make him aware of the situation as it looks to you and advise him of what might happen in the future. Do it gently though, otherwise you run the risk of him not coming to you when it all goes pear shaped, in case you say "I told you so".

Hoppinggreen · 02/09/2026 11:03

Unless they have a clinical diagnosis she couldn't possibly know that
If they do she shouldn't be sharing their medical info
Your Dad need to proceed with caution

Potentially...

DosPerros · 02/09/2026 11:01

I’d say it takes one to know one .

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/09/2026 11:00

Unless they have all been clinically diagnosed I would worry that she's the type to put labels onto any behaviour that she, personally, doesn't like.

And I would raise all the eyebrows I had. But I doubt you'll get your dad to see it if he is smitten.

Thundertoast · 02/09/2026 10:58

I would have thought that anyone dealing with that in their children would be terribly sad about the fact that they'd not spotted the signs in their ex partner and now the children have followed suit and they and everyone around them has to deal with the consequences of those actions. So not really a thing you'd bring up on a first date.

UniquePinkSwan · 02/09/2026 10:57

No. According to Mumsnet, every MIL is a narcissist so I’d take it with a pinch of salt

LlynTegid · 02/09/2026 10:56

A probable red flag without more details. You don't know why they have fallen out. Two people falling out, you may not know who to blame. One person falling out with several, you probably think it is the person not the others.

danfals · 02/09/2026 10:54

they're all adult kids but I don't know ages.

MyManinCaracas · 02/09/2026 10:54

Absolutely a red flag because even if she’s right she shouldn’t be blabbing family business like that to strangers. She’s a wrong’un.

LoveMyHorse · 02/09/2026 10:52

Yes

Franxi · 02/09/2026 10:52

Maybe they are? Sounds like your dad enjoyed the date, so maybe he should just see how it goes?

Justbrieme · 02/09/2026 10:50

Yes

MildlyAnnoyed · 02/09/2026 10:48

How old are the children?
