Holiday whilst off work

I’m off work on long term sick. I had a breakdown after my mum passed away. Things are getting better and I’m hoping to get back to work in the next few months
We had had a UK break booked for the end of August booked for ages and booked whilst I was at work. Said to DH I didn’t think I should go as a) I’m off sick and b) I’m just starting to get on top of things. I said he should just take the kids. He said I’m allowed to have a life and it’s no one’s business what I I do while I’m off sick. I don’t really know?? What do you guys think?

Thanks everyone. I think I’d talked myself out of it. It’s not going to be a taxing kind of a holiday. It’s also only a two hour drive away so if it is too much I can leave easily or I could go for the last few days. I’ll have a think on it. Husband will be pleased people agree with him😂

OP, I was off sick after multiple pregnancy losses and a couple of other stresses and my manager told me off for considering not going on holiday! I went and it was 100% the right thing to do!

Go away OP, surely it will only help your mental health? As an employer, I would absolutely support this for anyone I work with

StormGazing · Today 15:52

I was managing teams of people for 20 odd years before I retired, I’d be insisting you take the holiday, it’s probably a much needed break and will help support your recovery … I’m sure your GP would tell you the same from a wellness and health perspective too

Although I don’t believe you think you shouldn’t go at all!!

Edited

Agree with your last bit.

That was quick. 🙄

But I do think you should go if you want to.

This got people disciplined and sacked when I worked for the shittest ever NHS Trust.

PopcornKitten · Today 14:01

You absolutely can go. You’re off work due to mental health not a contagious disease that may render you needing to be away from others.

Doteycat · Today 10:26

Do not tell work. Just do not post your holiday pictures on social media! HR need to know nothing!

Post your pics if you want.
HR cant say a word.

In my country, the law says you can't travel abroad while you're on sick leave. Because the assumption is that if you're too sick to work, you're too sick for overseas holidays. But I don't think there's an issue with travelling within the country.

I don't know what the law says where you live, though.

DerekDematopolis · Today 07:42

When I was off work, my GP specifically advised me to spend the time doing things that made me happy as it was the only way I’d get better. She was right.

OP offered for her husband and children to still go.
OP, definitely go if you think it would benefit you. You probably do need a change of scene.

Likeiloveyou · Today 07:27

Yes it’s fine to go. Take care. 💐

Lostworlds · Today 07:27

I’m sorry to hear about your mum.

I was off on long term sickness and my manager checked in one day to ask how I was doing. She wanted to know if I was having any fun, not to be nosey but she reminded me that I was off sick for a reason, that I needed to find some joy again. I told her I was worried about going out incase someone spotted me but she said it was no-ones business.

Go on the holiday, take time to rest and relax somewhere else.

Ask your GP what they say and ask work via HR.

Do not tell work. Just do not post your holiday pictures on social media! HR need to know nothing!

LlynTegid · Today 07:20

Sorry to read of your loss. Having the option to come home and not posting on social media seems sensible.

lifehappens12 · Today 07:15

Was having a similar conversation with a friend this week. His psychiatrist even wrote that it would be good for him as part of his recovery before he would go and take his holiday. A lot of it is fear of judgement and work ‘catching’ him and getting in trouble. Please take the holiday

You’re off sick from work not off sick from life. I think you should go

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Today 06:56

One of my team was recently off sick for an extended period after losing both of his parents in fairly quick succession.

He had a prebooked holiday overseas and told me during a welfare call that he wasn't planning to go. I think he felt, like you, that he shouldn't go because he was signed off work. I pointed out to him that he was signed off from work and not from life, and I encouraged him to go if he thought that it might help with his recovery. He went, and it did help. He is now phasing back to work.

PrescriptionOnlyMedicine · Today 06:49

I’m sorry for your loss, OP

I always say being on sick leave doesn’t mean being under house arrest. If a trip away will help you recover and you want to go, do it. Best to let your boss know.

Bjorkdidit · Today 06:39

Of course you should go. It would be different if you were off sick for 'exhaustion' and but then went on a trekking holiday like one of my ex colleagues did (in the mountains, at altitude but apparently incapable of doing a job that involved light activity some of the time) but in the circumstances you describe, it sounds like just what you need.

I haven’t completely changed my mind! I’m having a think about it with all the advice given. Thanks all for being so nice about it. I really thought I was in the wrong for even thinking about going.

HR have nothing to do with it and its none of their business..

seawitchandgarden2 · Yesterday 21:45

I would go. It will be good for your mental health and if you are planning to go back to work you need to start easing yourself into normal life and see how you cope.

youalright · Yesterday 21:35

Absolutely go it will do you the world of good to have a break and a change of scenery. You don't need to stay in just because you're off sick getting out and about is part of recovery. Its not like ringing in sick saying you have diarrhoea and then going for a day out. Go and have a great time
