What time would you leave a family BBQ with primary-aged children?

You’re invited to a family BBQ on Saturday. You’ve been told to arrive 3-4pm and food is being served at 5pm, around kids’ tea time.

Both you and the host have primary school aged DC.

What time is the latest you leave?

So are you hosting but want it to finish up early? Are you in the uk? Schools are on. Holiday / does it matter?

Even at 4 I think that’s over the top. If they fall asleep in the car just carry them in and undress them then?
I’m sat here shaking my head because I’m just baffled that anyone would be so ruled by routines like this. I’ve never come across the likes of it. 😳

Me neither, toddlers just maybe but not primary school age. They'd be awake as soon as they had to get out of the car anyway, just straight upstairs and teeth/toilet bed.

No idea, I’ve never done it myself. I guess different things work for different people though.

I think that was just so that if they fell asleep in the car on the way home they could be transferred straight to bed already in pjs and teeth brushed?
A lot depends on the age of the primary school children. There’s a huge difference between a 4 year old and an 11 year old!

I’m shocked people would be so caught up about bed times that they’d bring pyjamas and toothbrush in the car, or give them a shower at the host’s house. Wtf just chill out. 😳

It’s local.

it’s just your family and the other family, not a big event

I’m usually a stickler for routine but with this age, summer holidays, location close by, family friends, I’d be more relaxed and possibly 8-10 pm if kids can sleep in tomorrow?

Oh and please don't insist on helping clear up, beyond carrying things into the house, I'd far rather do it in peace once everyone's gone.

A maximum 3 hour visit window time seems to work for us, but I guess arriving at 3-4 might extend it a little.

supercrone · Yesterday 21:55

I mean it's the summer, it could go on till 10 or 11 easy if everyone is enjoying it. I sense though that you thought your guests stayed too long. What time did they leave?

What time is it going on til

That’s the whole point - it ends when the guests leave

Interesting everyone has referred to their own journey, what they have on the next day. No one seems to have said “I’d leave by X time to allow the hosts to clear up and get their kids to bed”

Do people just think of themselves and not consider the host?

Well if I was the host I wouldn’t expect anyone to consider that I had to tidy up or put the kids bed because I have invited people and they’re there to have a good time. Do it in the morning if it’s late.

Don’t host things if you’re pissed off that people aren’t considering that you’ve got to tidy up

Its the school holidays so anytime I feel like it! Unless its clear the hosts are ready to wrap things up. Live a little!

Contrarymary30 · Yesterday 18:57

When the kids get tired , could be anytime before 11 .

Until the end of the BBQ if everyone is enjoying themselves?

Could be 8pm, could be 11pm. Surely depends on the event.

This. Its the summer holidays.

LumpkinPumpkin · Yesterday 18:55

I’d be led by the kids. It might be 6pm, it might be 10pm. My 5 and 7 year old were roasting marshmallows on the fire pit with the neighbours at 10pm last week. Other times, they’re clearly bored or dysregulated and a swift exit is essential. It depends entirely on the environment and how they’re handling it.

No real bedtimes here in the summer holidays. It depends how tired they are.

Viperregency · Yesterday 18:55

Did you organise a bbq now worried how long they will stay?

Id say not before 8. But if having fun and a few drinks, could be 10 or later.

Thingsthatgo · Yesterday 18:52

If the host wanted to people to leave at a particular time I would expect that you be part of the invitation.
BBQ at ours 3-9pm
Otherwise I would assume it goes on until the evening (that’s how it works with my friends and family - we just tell each other if it ends early).

usererror99 · Yesterday 18:44

No I don’t necessarily think of the host no - if they have organised a family bbq then they have to accept it will go on longer than the usual kids bedtime

TheLovelinessOfDemons · Yesterday 18:44

When they start getting tired. Or, because mine both had NDs, when they started getting bored, which was usually after they'd eaten.

Because I think most of us know when to leave , if the host starts clearing or if she mentions kids going to bed then I think most people leave

ThatLemonBee · Yesterday 18:39

On a Saturday ? Are this close friends ? Are you close ? If all is going well then make a night out if it .

pollymere · Yesterday 18:18

People go home when the kids start becoming feral. I would anticipate them getting bored around 18:30 if they've already been there two hours before they get food. They'll eat half a hot dog and then want to leave 😂.

However mine was a total night owl who's never slept much so I could never use the excuse of bath/bedtime. It's a good one whether you're hosting or trying to leave.

liveforsummer · Yesterday 18:18

I would not put a time on it. I’d leave when it seems it’s ending if the DC are still happy and having fun. Many hosts want to party to carry on so I’d be led by them. My dc would get up for next day plans regardless however I’d have to consider my ability too 😅

Bowies · Yesterday 17:49

Bananarice · Yesterday 07:43

I help and clean up as we go along. Now that ds1 is older, I give him the nood off it is time to ask for the hover.

The host has the easiest and they tend to give their children a quick shower, whilst we are there. And if needed I have given my own dc a quick shower and gotten clothes from the car. Dc sleep on car journey home.

This is only with family and freinds I'm close with. But for birthday parties or one day thing. We tend to leave early. I tend to make myself busy with tidying up and reminding my children where the bin is. I prefer to stay at home, but my children love making freinds.
