I don’t know how knowing my mortgage payment would help really OP. £800 is a lot if you only have say £1600 coming in a month, or £800 is very little if you have £4500 coming in a month. We have 2 young children and our mortgage is higher than £800, but it is also a pretty small % of our household income so doesn’t register to me as an issue.

What's your question? Isn't £800 considered to be quite a low mortgage payment these days? Even 2 people on NMW will be earning £3500 between them.

You need to look at what you'll be paying in childcare, which could be significantly more than £800 pm and if that doesn't look affordable, how you can minimise childcare, eg by both you and your partner working part time on different days.

Although you do say 'I' a lot so are you planning to be a single parent? That will financially be tough unless you are a high earner with a good maternity package.

we freelance so income is equivalent of two people on NMW. It can easily be much higher quickly but hasn't been for 3 years.

But I also have no maternity leave. There is an allowance but I'll need to work more days that it allows for over maternity so would be disqualified.

I'm interested if others are in a similar situation

I don’t think Dh and I ever paid £800 even in rent! That’s fantastic. I think rent on our first house together when we were TTC 15 years ago was £900. Then next one was £1100. We had our 2nd while living there. We bought our first place and mortgage is nearly £1700, likely to go up to over £2000 when we re-mortgage next year as we have a very low rate. I think £800 mortgage puts you in a fantastic position as long as you aren’t on the bones of your ass trying to afford it.

@mindutopia we're not, we're just moving from a very small £400p/m to £800p/m and wiped out all our savings on the deposit in the process
