I’ve been reading loads of old threads on this but wanted to post a new one to get some recent experiences. I’m reading a lot of negative experiences particularly revolving around mood, acne and bloating. Weighing up the negatives/positives. I’ve ordered the
medication but still debating taking them or not. I’m due on 3 days into a 10 day holiday abroad.
Has anyone taken these recently and had a positive experience?

Thanks. 😀

We’ve used them twice for DD and they were fine: she is refusing to use them again as the last time her period after was quite heavy.

caveheatblank · 23/07/2026 10:27

They made me absolutely psychotic. Honestly I was on them 5 days and if I didn’t have the most patient husband I could have blown up my marriage. I will state though that I was very sensitive to the pill and had to come off that due to mood swings and depressive moods, so maybe if you’ve been ok on hormonal contraception that’s a sign you won’t be as sensitive as I was!

caveheatblank · 23/07/2026 10:28

If it’s not too late, you could try taking it the cycle before your holiday to push your cycle down the line but without having to take it on holiday.

Lomonald · 23/07/2026 10:28

Years ago i took it for my wedding and then a hospital procedure I had no ill effects.

TheFatCatSatOnTheMat · 23/07/2026 10:29

I use them all the time in my IVf treatment. They are absolutely fine.

Thanks for the replies so far. Bump

I’ve taken them once last year to delay my period for a weekend away, along with my normal contraceptive pill. Omg they sent me crazy 🤪 I don’t know if it was a withdraw bleed or a period I had after but it was so so heavy. Then I felt pregnant that weekend away! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I had a miscarriage. I thought I was only around 4/5 weeks when I found out but I was actually 8-9 weeks and it went back to that particular weekend I thought the bleeding was a period. Everyone’s body is different with these things though xx

Ineedanewsofa · 23/07/2026 22:07

My experience has not been positive with it but I will try again because I’m pretty sure I’m peri and my hormones have changed so it might be different.

Platypus7 · 23/07/2026 22:10

I did a few years ago for a holiday and it was absolutely fine.

MissFahrenheit · 23/07/2026 22:11

I’ve used them twice in the last couple of years and no problems at all.

hydrangeasandroses · 23/07/2026 22:26

I used them to push my period back by 3 days as I was due on for a weekend away. They worked absolutely fine. I just had a normal period the day after I stopped taking them. No side effects and everything straight back to normal

Obviouslyanxiousmum · 23/07/2026 22:26

They were fine whilst I was on then, but I had the period from hell after. Bleeding through super tampons in less than an hour and genuinely felt like labour contractions. Also messed my cycle up for a good few months after, honestly not worth it imo! I’ve been on holiday since and just used tampons and its been fine, I even find that the stress from travelling (and probably the increased amount of alcohol I drink when on hols) mean my period is much lighter anyway!

tiredmama25 · 23/07/2026 22:44

I suffer with low mood and bloating before I’m due on my period normally so my biggest worry is that I get that feeling but extended for the duration until I stop taking them.

The elevated blood clot risk scares me too but I have bought some compression stockings to wear on the flight.

I will use tampons, it’s more the inconvenience of traipsing to the toilet/in and out of the pool/worrying about swim wear and what I’m wearing if any leaks etc.

But I don’t want to be really bloated the whole time either. Really torn.

I take them daily and have for 2 year as part of my HRT and stopping my cycle due to heavy painful periods, no side effects at all.

caveheatblank · 23/07/2026 22:52

@tiredmama25 when do you go?

TheLette · 23/07/2026 23:01

I used them for this purpose regularly before having kids with no issues (and somewhat surprising because the contraceptive pill always disagreed with me). Since having children I cannot tolerate even a single pill sadly, so it's period swimwear for me. Bizarre, not sure why having kids has made a difference. I wondered if it was breastfeeding (higher hormones?) but still an issue long after that stopped.

WhatMe123 · 23/07/2026 23:03

I’ve used them before and been totally fine

SaveMeFromMyBoobs · 23/07/2026 23:07

Was awful for me, period after was really bad as well. But I can't take any hormonal birth control and I can't even tolerate the progesterone coil which has the lowest hormone dose. I put on a solid 5kg of water weight with bloating (literally sausage fingers) and it makes me really anxious.

If you usually tolerate hormonal birth control well you'll probably be fine. If not I'd avoid. Length of time also plays a huge factor. If you were taking it to push back a couple of days again probably fine. Considering you're probably going to be taking it for a couple of weeks you may find its 2 weeks of PMS and a God awful period after.

If you had time for a period before the holiday I'd take then to push the holiday one back but not risk the awfulness while away.

Summersongroses · 23/07/2026 23:09

I’ve had both. Norethisterone and Provera (had to have Provera due to my BMI being just over the threshold this time for nor. ). Both were fine and did the job of delaying my period but my next period which came about 10 days after I stopped taking them was SO heavy on both. And then the period after that one, was very light. And then it went back to normal. Definitely was a funny few months. But rather that than have my usual period on holiday….

emnetstrozzapreti · 23/07/2026 23:10

I've used them several times, most recently a few months ago - have never had any side effects.

annlee3817 · 23/07/2026 23:18

I took them a couple of weeks ago, only 4 days worth ad just needed them to tide me over until the Sunday, didn't feel extra hornonal on them, and had no issues really, due on next week so will see how that goes

tiredmama25 · 24/07/2026 06:04

caveheatblank · 23/07/2026 22:52

@tiredmama25 when do you go?

I fly on Sunday. Due on Wednesday.

I’ve not been on any contraception since I had my first child 16 years ago.

Very mixed bag of experiences, but I understand everyone tolerates things differently.

i was due on this holiday coming up but i purposefully used it on my last cycle to alter the dates. That way the after mass of those pills wont cause any issues on holiday

I wish I’d done this now in hindsight but it’s too late now. 🙈

I used to use them regularly. So if I had a night out, work event, holiday etc, I’d just delay my period, always kept a stock of them, never had any ill effects from them. No one can predict if you will, just don’t take a second pill if the first disagrees, no biggie, it’s not one and done.
