Why are my UK to Melbourne flights with Bangkok stopover on return so expensive?

I am trying to book a flight from UK to Melbourne in September, flying back January time to include stopover a couple of weeks in Bangkok. Emirates want 4.5k! Any seasoned travellers who can see what I am doing wrong or will I have to scrap the Thailand idea?

Presumably Emirates don’t fly Melbourne to Bangkok directly?

Have you put it in skyscanner?

I put the information in Emirates mufti city option. I can’t see how to add the multi stop option on skyscanner but will have another look.

Yeah try skyscanner, I just checked some random dates and it gives me £1200

Multi city is on the drop down with return and one way

Try a different airline that goes via SE Asia. Starting with Thai airlines. Emirates flies via Dubai as their hub so you’re adding a sideways stopover rather than stopping en route or close by.

Try a direct return to BKK and then buy a flight in Thailand to Melbourne and return to BKK. It'll mean a stopover on the way out and on the way back. Try direct with Thai Air
