Husband is hospital - what to get for his birthday?

My husband is on a mental health ward for the foreseeable. He is suicidal. His birthday is coming up. I have no idea what to get him. He isn't easy to buy for at the best of times. I had bought him a new kitchen knife a few months ago because he kept moaning ours were blunt and I was really pleased with it but obviously that isn't happening now! I can't see there ever being a time I will feel happy giving it to him tbh. The fall back was always a nice bottle of whisky but obviously he cant have that in hospital and I'm not sure whether he can have it with whatever tablets he'll be on when he gets out. He doesn't have any hobbies and isn't interested in learning anything. He doesn't even do cakes. I've been taking in sweets when I visit but he hasn't been eating them. He specifically said no when I offered to bring him some books in. I really want to get him something nice but I dont think I can. Any ideas? He doesn't need any clothes and isn't interested in them.

Art supplies? Even if he wasn't into art before he went in - the two people who i know well who've been on mental health inpatient facilities did lots of art when in there.

I'm very sorry you are going through this. Hope he makes a full recovery

Kindle or some headphones so he can listen to audio books on his phone or music ?

Massager

I know you say he doesn't have hobbies OP but does he like doing jigsaws ? You can get some really lovely ones.

Julymoy · 15/07/2026 23:06

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

No to art or jigsaws - I did suggest both but he was very dismissive. It's so frustrating because he moans he is bored but then won't try stuff. I know that is part of his illness but he was a bit like that before too tbh.

He has his phone and headset and Spotify.

A mindfulness journal notebook? A preloaded digital photo frame?

Socks

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/07/2026 14:05

Has he got an iPad?

cestlavielife · 16/07/2026 14:06

Ask him. But if he cannot express any concrete wishes as not in the space for it then a nice card and some favourite biscuits/food? So you feel you tried.
Did he enjoy birthdays and gifts before this episode?

Kingdomofsleep · 16/07/2026 14:58

My other suggestion would be games to play with other patients - like a backgammon set or a board game.

Otherwise maybe a nice pot plant?

ShowOfHands · 16/07/2026 15:03

Something to wear while he's in there and afterwards? New dressing gown? Slippers? Jumper?

Any food he likes? Or tea/coffee/hot chocolate?

When my dad was in hospital for the same reason, he didn't want anything at all and found gifts overwhelming. Ultimately, we respected that in the end but it was so very tough.

hahabahbag · 16/07/2026 15:04

Homemade biscuits? If he like chocolate make tiffin, perfect to keep as a come again treat and can be pre cut for safety. Digital photo frame included jpegs with lovely messages to remind him he’s loved

Maybe a hand hold gaming console, did he have a Gameboy as a kid? Most people live retro gaming. Or some interesting magazines like Readers Digest, there's always amazing stories in them, I really thought they'd be old fashioned and boring, but I just love them.

Pastit12 · 16/07/2026 16:48

Has he got / allowed a Kindle ?

Julymoy · 16/07/2026 23:14

He isn't interested in reading.

Last time he was in, he did do some puzzle books but he was having a psychotic episode then so in a completely different head space. I might get some for him anyway. If he doesn't want them he can leave them in the communal area.

He has all the clothes he needs/wants.

He drives me mad with gifts. He shows zero enthusiasm regardless of what you get him or if it's sonething he's asked for. But then he gets down if you don't. I misjudged Father's Day which is why this is important. He doesn't normally care about father's day and he'll get a card and maybe a bar of chocolate at most. However our son is old enough to sort that out himself so I remind him and leave him to it. But right now my son is so angry and upset about everything that he is refusing to even acknowledge his dad exists. So he didnt get anything and I didn't push. When my husband realised (a week after father's day) that he didnt get anything he was quite upset. I'll sort out a birthday card for my son this time. He'll sign it even if he won't do anything else.

When my dad was in hospital over his birthday I gave him a filled photo album (with photos of his grandchildren - my children).
All the best to you both at this time x

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's a really difficult time for you all.

It's really difficult finding the right thing, I think when they are in that frame of mind and have reached the suicidal feelings their minds don't know what they want, they think they want nothing but they do and nothing is ever right.

Not sure if this is any help but when my adult son was suicidal and wanted to do absolutely nothing but lie in bed I got him some adult colouring books, I know you say your husband isn't into art either was my son but these clicked with him, when the dark thoughts got overwhelming he would colour in them, he said they helped him focus not have the thoughts take over, some days and nights he would colour for half an hour some days hours. There's many different types of adult colouring books, I got a few different ones, there's some with really small colouring areas and some huge, I really thought when they arrived that my ds wouldn't colour in them because of how big some of the shapes etc were to colour but he did. I also got big packs of colouring pencils, crayons and markers as my ds would sometimes prefer using all at once or markers one day colouring pencils the next. I just made sure there was enough choice.

It might be an idea to try, even if he does a little bit it might be something he will like.

Take care sorry that was long x

@Julymoy would a small gift box with various memories of easier times be appropriate? 🌻

I was going to suggest a colouring book and some pens

Pastit12 · 17/07/2026 10:59

Sorry you’re in this situation I can’t begin to imagine how hard it must be for you and your son I have had family who has suffered from depression and I tried loads of things that have been kindly suggested on here . Thankfully he will now start reading a book which he has always enjoyed
I know you said he isn’t into reading but would he be more receptive to an audio book and some headphones
So If pp have suggested this

Pastit12 · 17/07/2026 10:59

Meant sorry if it has already been suggested
