Is JUST a homemade card really okay?

I’m an ex teacher but left over a decade ago. I’m always very adamant that parents shouldn’t feel the need to get a present for teachers, that it’s not expected and that my most treasured gifts were homemade cards.

Back then I’d get some gifts but definitely not the majority of the class and I really honestly didn’t expect it at all.

My son is in nursery class so we made a card, he drew a picture etc and I wrote a nice note. What I wasn’t expecting was to turn up and find that literally almost everyone had gotten the teacher a present - flowers, chocolates, wine etc. There were around ten other children arriving when we did and maybe 8 of them handed her a gift. She’s not leaving or retiring or anything so I was surprised.

Even my son noticed and asked me if it was Mrs Smith’s birthday.

Its made me doubt myself and the folded piece of card with bits of pipe cleaners stuck on. Have things changed regarding how common it is to get presents? Honestly I could have afforded a box of chocolates and now I’m thinking maybe I should have done that too.

I do stand by the fact that I didn’t expect anything as a teacher and loved the cards but I’m very sentimental and maybe assuming everyone feels the same. My son has SEN and she’s been great with him.

I love to receive a hand made card from the children. I also enjoy receiving wine and chocolates. Last year a parent bought me some earrings which I won't wear as they are not to my taste. I appreciate every card and gift though.

DS is a primary school teacher and he loves the home made cards and notes from parents. He doesn’t drink so we get the wine and he found a pile of out of date store vouchers in his kitchen drawer.

Thanks everyone. I think the majority opinion is that the card is fine and appreciated. Next year I may consider getting something small as well as the homemade card now that I know how common it is but after reading the responses I’m not worried about the fact I didn’t.

As for why I wouldn’t buy something, it just didn’t really occur to me to do both. Like I said it wasn’t as much of a “thing” when I taught at least not in the schools I taught at. I thought the card was already a nice thing to do that showed appreciation.

I am established in my new career but my box of old teaching cards / handmade stuff have followed me over two house moves. I don’t keep every drawing my own child child has ever done as he churns them out like a machine but I keep some of the most special stuff he’s made and been really proud of and I do keep other sentimental things eg birthday cards with a poem that my mum wrote for me, or particularly nice personal messages from family members.

We are all different. I wouldn’t be upset if the teacher didn’t want to keep the card especially if they get 30 every year. I am sure it made her smile at the time. I think I was just surprised and started overthinking.

My primary school teacher mum retired from teaching after 40 years but still keeps her box of cards and letters. They mean a lot to her! Much more than any gift.

My husband is a secondary school teacher and does the same. They prefer sweets (not mugs!) for the staff room tbh but won't of course say it to parents and children.

My daughter and her friend wanted to gift their ballet teacher. Fine. She had a little tea box with a ballet dancer on it from a local posh tea house shop and a card written by the girls.
The girls said afterwards "Our teacher loved the card! - she looked so happy reading it".
I am sure she enjoyed the pretty tea box but really the card was her highlight.

Honestly I would bin a card. Who has room to store cards from children every year. A box of chocolates is nice and something to be enjoyed but not taking up space in a house.

Same 😬

At our school we do a collection and everyone chips in what they want. That way it all gets split and everyone gets something, the teachers, the TA’s, head teacher and reception. Lots of them give up their family time and fundraise for the school and it means everyone is included makes them feel appreciated. They get private handmade cards too.

I had a similar experience. I bought a card for my daughter’s teachers. That’s enough, they’re being paid to teach. I feel that there’s no need to get more than a card and a handmade one is even more thoughtful. A card is a nice acknowledgment, a gift is lovely but it’s unnecessary in my opinion.
