@Liverpoolxxxwhy not watch Kerri Russell’s partner Matthew Rhys in Widow’s Bay? He won an Emmy for it and it’s a nice balance of humour and horror and very seasonally appropriate! He’s excellent.

Just finished. Was amazing at the end. We need to hear Hal’s statement.

I reckon she’ll get reinstated by the next president for the next series. Which they need to start working on tomorrow.

What shall I watch now???

I’ve just started watching Time - it’s on iplayer/catch-up. The latest season came out this month, there’s 3 seasons and only 3 episodes in each. Not sure how it passed me by when it first came out, my sister recommended it.

It’s quite hard-hitting, definitely thought provoking. First season has Sean Bean and Stephen Graham, written by Jimmy McGovern.

I just hope Hal doesn’t hold it against Kate later. I can see him saying she left him no option as he’d have been sacked anyway. The fact he actually did it for love, and because he knew she was right, being neither here nor there…

First few episodes were dull. It gets better.

StarCourt

I binged, Io think it took 2 days.

You can't possibly suggest that episode 4 is dull!

Italiangreyhound · Yesterday 11:19

I hated the moment when Hal went and doubled down on the 'we will fire on you message.'

I love Idra and Stuart. So cute. He is tall and might fart. She might disappear for weeks and the only thing he will know for certain is she isn't dead!

"the stuffy old British man tasked with greeting them."

That made me smile. Why did he need a sword on his outfit!

I knew the actor, and it's Bridgette Jones 's boss from the TV station!

Ok I loved the first 2 seasons; was just about ok with the third even though it jumped the shark; but my God, this season is so awful. The constant arguments in public and the constant blurring of lines between their private life and public roles is so tedious. I work adjacent to people in these positions- no one behaves like her, ever. And no one in her position would have access to half the information that she does. And it is so insulting to the UK (I’m Irish so I shouldn’t even notice this but I do).

I’m glad someone else has commented about how they make the British look. I tolerated in previous series but the first episode of season 4 really wound me up, with BP insisting on a full ceremonial welcome for a spontaneous visit at Windsor castle and the stuffy old British man tasked with greeting them.

Nickcaveinbrighton · 24/10/2026 06:34

Just watched the last episode, what a belter!! I loved it.

I felt like I was getting the politics better by the end of the season, I had a few moments where I rewound an earlier episode as I hadnt followed well.

I might have to rewatch some favourite West Wing episodes whilst I await season 5.

What storyline/moment do people see as the jumping the shark moment?

GarlicEverything · 24/10/2026 01:34

Netflix hasn't yet confirmed a 5th season. They can't leave it on that cliffhanger!

OK, she's not officially a diplomat any more - but I NEED to see how it unfolds! I appreciated the way they were working current issues into the storyline - must be tricky; they have to anticipate what's going to happen without going in too hard and looking stupid if they fall wide of the mark. They'll certainly have a lot to work with on the next season.

They missed the riots in Europe but they did have some unruly demos, so I'll forgive them.

I loved the Leader Of The Free World becoming increasingly, impulsively, dangerously aggressive. And the presidential spouse suddenly taking over diplomatic duties? Prescient!

Ijwwm · 24/10/2026 01:08

I’m an older git, I knew what it meant, I just like hearing how others picture phrases that have become well known. Liked the thread recently that asked what do you think a tromboleese is!

Italiangreyhound · 24/10/2026 01:03

I think it was like jumping the gun, but it is much more specific!

jump the shark

"Jumping the shark" is an idiom used to describe the precise moment a TV show, movie, or creative work exhausts its original premise and introduces a ridiculous, far-fetched plot twist or gimmick in a desperate attempt to stay popular.

Origin of the Phrase

  • The Episode: The phrase comes from a September 20, 1977 episode of the American sitcom Happy Days (Season 5, Episode 3: "Hollywood: Part 3"

He picked her. He chose her. It was one of the most powerfully romantic gestures of love that I’ve seen in recent times. I love this series. And season 4 didn’t disappoint. The complexity of power, love, marriage, politics, treachery. Bloody marvellous!

I've looked it up and realised that i have mentally had the wrong idea of what jump the shark means!!!

Ha, intrigued to hear what you thought it meant. Not in a mean way, genuinely find it interesting how people picture different things.

Enjoyed it a lot. It is however getting a bit shark-jumpy.

I thought this about season 3. I wasn’t going to bother with season 4, should I?

Even more parallels now that Melania has now got involved and secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine 🤭

I had never watched the Diplomat, but recently got Netflix and starting watching it as a recommended series by some on Telly Addicts.

I hadn't realised a new season was just starting, so have gone from Episode 1 Series 1 through to the last episode of series 4.

Maybe this complete binge watch didn't do the series any favours, but was already finding it a bit samey and in fact as Hal said right at the end, you should have left me.

I thought there on off relationship was just implausible.

And as for the politics - seriously!!!!!!!!

Funnily enough I did think it was almost written as a response to the relentless criticism of the misogyny of the West Wing, so couldn't believe it when Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford both turned up. (She had publicly complained about the West Wing)

Anyhow, although some bits I got a good laugh at, whether meant to or not. And why the Brits had to put up with pushy Yanks have no idea.

If there are any more episodes it will become as ridiculous as Homeland did.

However I did have a soft spot for Stuart.

Sort of sorry as was looking forward for something with a bit of depth.

Just finished it and loved it - although i have trouble keeping up with the diplomat-speak and often have no idea what they are actually saying to each other!

It's not just me then!

I feel like there is a lot of sub-text and switching between political and personal/relationship problems that I miss.

coconuthandcream · 22/10/2026 13:41

Have now finished watching and wished that the ending would happen with Trump!

Todd reminds me of Dylan the rabbit in Magic Roundabout.
I did wonder whether Todd would be clever and had a cunning plan but seems just to be stupid. Couldn’t work his character out initially .
Still think ‘Windsor Castle’ was stupid !

Italiangreyhound · 22/10/2026 11:46

"Anyone else think that some of this has been a subtle nod re Trump? A president that’s a bit unhinged, got shot but not fatal, making snap decisions without thinking things through - meanwhile, their team are trying to navigate how to handle this individual that kind of doesn’t give a flying fudge about anyone else on the global stage."

Yes!! And I had forgotten Trump got shoot!
