Hair: always do something with it. Use some product. A spritz of hairspray to keep wispies down.
ballerina bun
chignon
neat pony

Make-up. Minimal is fine. Keep brows groomed. Light dusting of a light bronzer, a few strokes of black mascara. A tinted lip balm in a very natural shade.

Teeth. Lots of people neglect teeth as they age. Stay on top of this. Get a professional bleach kit from the dentist. I know a few people who bleached in their 50's and 60's and it was amazing.

The only thing that really comes to mind for me is to brighten the colours. But you have to wear what makes you feel good and comfortable.

My town is Belfast so it’s got most things.

Try Envoy of Belfast. Fabulous shop.

I’m about 5foot 6. I’m defo and 18 chest is rather large after breast feeding 5 babies (youngest 16) bra is 38g. My husband wasn’t a looker when I married him. I was attracted to the ugly best friend because they were usually more dead on. Hubby was just that. But he has a silver fox thing going on now and when he wears his suit and
polished shoes for work he has that powerful presence he doesn’t have in jeans and golf shirt! Ding Dong!

Anyway I’ve had my colours done a year ago I’m a
”soft summer” I guess I should embrace the colour thing really. My town is Belfast so it’s got most things. My hair is good I go to a place in city centre and the colour and cut is good. I’ll check out that nail brand a pp suggested and try that too. I like the look of the bare minerals stuff so I’ll try that.

thanks again for your input. Even the bitchy ones made me smile x

Ah missed this re colours. Yeah soft summer is very different to the colours you're wearing, it honestly makes such a difference, my friend is an autumn and was very the opposite so has now changed colours and it has made a huge difference.

I use giorgio armani luminous silk foundation and powder, so much better than my previous mac stuff that is a lot thicker, I thought I was hiding more age by using it but using a lighter foundation and luminat8ng powder it looks so much better.

I actually dont mind the jumper but the trousers/shoes would be a no for me.

And you're definitely not a minger!!

What's a 'free P pastor's wife'?

Free Presbyterian. Pastors look wives with traditional wives at home. So conservative.

Get your colours done as it's amazing how much fresher you look in the right colours. You don't necessarily need make up when your clothes are in harmony with your own colouring but a lot of analysts will advise you on make up, too. Some will also do a style make over but you could just book a free appointment with the personal stylist at your nearest JL or other department store next time you plan to refresh your wardrobe.

I loved doing this, I would highly recommend. I was on the right track colour wise but there were a few I have now started wearing and some I have binned. It really helped with ny make up/hair colour also.

I also agree with the poster whi suggested putting your photo into chat gpt. That will help with some ideas.

I think your figure looks good, but I do agree with most others, even my 70 yo mum wouldn't wear it.

Skin wise, I used skin and me for a while, it really worked for me, it is expensive so I asked AI for alternatives and I now use various products that do the same. Skin routine twice a day is a must IMO. Skin and me trial is cheap so may be worth doing for a couple of months.

I tend to go for jeans and fitted tops/jumpers, usually v neck. Dressing for your shape is vital, chat gpt can help with that also.

I have read this so often on MN I did it the other day, only for DH to helpfully point out that my top was half stuck in my waistband. Clearly not pulling off the effortless French tuck chic I was aiming for…

🤣 it makes me look ten times worse, I don’t tuck anything in.

Get yourself down to Dunnes and try for a bit more of a current look. See attached . Some cardigans or crew necks or v necks worn with a white t shirt underneath for a bit of warmth if you need it. How about a coord set for when at home?

Try tucking the top into the trousers (or a loose half in, half out) and it will look much better

And I think this is the jumper you are wearing which in reality is an ok jumper, I think it’s how you are standing which has made people think it’s not so nice. If you click on each colour you will see the different style trousers they have dressed thr models in. One of the different styles might suit you better with the jumper you already own. I try to make the most of what I have by buying different things to mix in with my clothes for different looks.

You really don’t look like a size 18. Are you sure? If have guessed a 14. Is it worth trying clothes a little smaller / tighter.
I am a lot younger but actually think your shoes are on trend and your trousers are ok too. Axe the baggy jumpers and let your figure show. Highlights, nails done, bit of make up (maybe bit of Botox / filler if you fancy it) will make a whole world of difference. Also getting eyebrows done if gappy have them micro bladed into a good shape.

Similar to the jumper I own, I have it relaxed look so bigger than I need so not tight on my bust. https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1301246003.html?srsltid=AYCX9vL1NNYFq9znN_nRoFt8xA_dQtqDLv4_ys2VxOVwyiIcskH4DKkM

I’ve worn similar to that this week, the wine style with the jumper. . I’m still not completely happy with the trousers as a bit too wide for me. But you are taller so should suit you better.

I have them in black. I’ve worn them with a patterned black with blue and green flowers blouse style top (no buttons as big busted so can’t wear buttons) and a khaki green pointelle jumper over. I already had top and jumper as I mix a few new bits with stuff I already own.

I didn’t feel spectacular in the outfit but was smart enough, just had my hair in ponytail no makeup. (Other days I’m in loungers or leggings, tshirt and hoodies).

You look like my sister physically. She is a size 18 but like you, has great legs and is in proportion. If you took that jumper off I am betting you have an hourglass figure. She has embraced herself and has a confidence I have never had (size 10 and I wear black as black is easy!).

Best advice I can give is to ask that friend you have that you envy for being effortlessly stylish (we all have one!) to take you shopping. When my sister takes me shopping she makes me try on things I would never look twice at and I always look wonderful.

With big boobs, dont for for anything that you think hides them cos it doesnt. I used to have JJ boobs (reduction since) and a v neck works best.

black as black is easy!

Black is also great as well as easy. Let's be honest.

Though i do have a friend who looks like Morticia Addams in black. But most people look smart in black.

I'm not in to fashion in any way. But your dress style here is very unflattering OP.
If you are feeling insecure then go for a more womanly look.

Your post is great… how exciting wanting to have a glow up wear make up look after yourself and most importantly be proud of yourself not what your husband or anyone else thinks! Do it for your self.
get yourself to a make up counter in shopping centre I depending on budget go for Trinny or if you can Dior! However if too expensive only do it once then you know what makeup suit you and how to apply. Then use brands you can get in super drug x
go and see a person stylist somewhere like John Lewis I don’t think you have to pay it buy anything but it will be fun take a friend or daughter if you have one. Enjoy x

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 23:31

Also don’t call yourself that you certainly aren’t, your DH is lucky to have you.

OneNewEagle · Yesterday 23:30

I’m a similar size to you OP, and probably age. I’m 18 in tops 14 in trousers and I think it’s possible you are similar. It’s the bust that doesn’t fit in the tops lol

You have a better figure than me and I think you look fine. The jumper is also ok, I’d wear that at home. I’m sure I have far worse. I’d probably put the jumper with skinny jeans even though they are not even in fashion.

headache · Yesterday 23:28

I’m 51 and the perimenopause plus chronic pain has done its job on me too, I go out to work each day so have to be relatively put together so at weekends I’m a slob in dog walking leggings, my tips (from myself and some over 50s on SM)

  1. hair, you wear you’re hair everyday so a good cut and colour is an essential for me
  2. I’ve really researched skincare this year, started with one product that would make a difference and built up a routine. It doesn’t need to be expensive and I know I’m not going to have 20 year olds skin again but my skin is starting to look and feel better, my dark spots are reducing too.
  3. start with a good pair of jeans that suit your body shape, take a good few pairs into the changing room and find what looks good on you, I’m a classic pear with a big bum so skinny jeans, those barrel legs do nothing for me. Plus I’m only 5 foot 3, I’m living wide leg jeans just now, from there a nice pair of trainers, a few tops and a good jacket are the next key pieces.
  4. Good luck and have fun experimenting
ClarkeFangirl · Yesterday 23:26

You have a great figure, so that's a good start. Spend some money at Uniqlo, buy some colourful trainers and jolly socks for when you leave the house, go to a good hairdresser and ask them to be bold with recommendations.

Get some natural looking makeup. A dab of lippie/mascara/blush (doesn't have to be all) for around the house. Put it on first thing, and you'll feel better every time you catch yourself in the mirror. Maybe a bit of tinted moisturiser too.

Lastly, a pair of simple earrings and some perfume.

Sounds a lot but isn't a huge departure from what your picture shows, and hopefully will perk you up a bit.

roadrunnerbeepbeep · Yesterday 23:26

And agree with the posters who suggested bra fitting. Always worth it

Smudgesmith · Yesterday 23:25

Highlights, and a session with a personal shopper at John Lewis would be something I recommend. Maybe even try and new hairdresser? Mix things up a bit. If you're unsure of your style you could try Pinterest and create a board of things you like on other people. Maybe try and see what would work on you. I follow women, I guess you would call influencers, that I admire re their personal style and feel it matches my vibe.
Try some more modern shaped jeans and tailored trousers. Basics like long sleeve tees, cashmere jumpers etc. Create style not just throw on clothes. Use belts, accessories like jewellery, scarves and the right shoes for the right bottoms. For instance chisel toe or pointed boots, loafers, ballet pumps, low profile trendier trainers. Theres lots of guidance videos online about what shapes go together.
