I can’t see your face as FB has covered it up but for clothes you can get a free personal shopping session at John Lewis? You aren’t obliged to buy any of the outfits but the personal shoppers will find clothes they think suit you (you can suggest occasions such as a wedding, work, etc that you might need the outfits for) and they’ll bring in planned outfits for you to try on in store. It’s great I’ve done it a couple of times.

I'm new to Instagram but now follow secretly.styled She has simple but very good ideas for helping those of us with no clue look a bit more with it. You have a great figure so can easily look well turned out. It just takes a couple more minutes in the morning instead of throwing on trousers and jumper.
ETA and a decent haircut possibly with highlights if you have sunk into mousey brown like I have. I just don't understand how my natural hair colour can be so unflattering 😅

I would look into colour analysis. Work out your colour season (bright spring, soft summer, warm autumn, dark winter... or maybe something else?), find your best colours/shades and wear them on top near your face for an easy and instant glow-up!

Sorry, just saw that you had your colours done and that you're a soft summer - in that case you are wearing the exact opposite of what you should be wearing with that jumper! I would definitely lean into your colour palette, personally it made the world of difference for me.

This thread is exhausting.
I agree with @OsfameronTanamoril. Op you need to find a way of making this enjoyable otherwise you're going to give up after a couple of weeks and then feel even worse.

I'd pick out a couple of things that sound to you like fun. Doesn't matter if it's experimenting with lipstick, looking through a load of fashion magazines or apps, watching what people wear in the coffee shop (or wherever) or going into town for a try on session. Start there. Increase when you feel ready.

QOD · Today 08:06

I’d get a lash tint and lift. More natural than makeup

leggings and long flowy top and most importantly a good bra to hoik the girls up

Arcticbattle32 · Today 07:58

Don’t know what your hair is like but maybe get to the hairdresser for a cut and colour? And do that regularly…. Space NK for advice on make up? I like mint velvet clothes for comfy and practical fashion. And adidas samba / gazelle trainers.

I'm not very 'put together' myself, but I do have good skin and (I think) wear OK clothes. Here's what I notice in other people as I get older: hair (thick/sleek/good shape/blended greys etc) and nails (I pick at mine, so envious of others' bright manicures).

Re clothes, buy some good quality basics. Have a bra fitting (it makes a difference). Uniqlo have some basic jewelled coloured tops with cashmere in them. Lovely, warm, simple. Buy some vintage-y trainers. And invest in a good coat.

No one has to wear makeup @Idontpostmuch

its my thing, and the op asked for help, but I’m very much each to their own

@Nylonflares I'm really confused. You're making no sense. Are you addressing wrong poster? Please explain.

Hiya,
Join the style me happy community on Facebook. She does really reasonably priced season palette and body shape analysis and will tell you all of the styles and shapes that will back you GLOW! Also, you can post outfits in there and the women are absolutely lovely. Even if they offer critique it’s always very tactile and not malicious!

recently lost 13st then had skin removal so I have also had a style crisis as I could only ever wear leggings and tunic dressed before. (i am late thirties). they’ve been great with me x
good luck xx

@BitterHarvest your thread is on Facebook just so you know. Your background could be a giveaway?

Can you do a better picture, wearing leggings and a vest top so we can see your body type?

Fluffybagel · Today 06:57

Laura Geller make up is really good for mature skin. The baked foundation goes on well and quickly and doesn’t settle into fine lines and wrinkles. It’s a powder and my whole routine takes 5 mins with it

OsfameronTanamoril · Today 06:35

So glad DH looks worse every year- as indeed do I- and I don't have to do all this to keep up.😀

OP so much advice but find your vibe. The idea of daytime and evening looks and blow outs and scarfs might be your thing or might make you know it’s not your thing!

At the same age I have long messy hair designed to need a blob of wax and nothing else. It’s not fashionable but my grey curls are fun. I like big boots and barrel leg jeans. I wear oversized chunky knits and skirts with shape and fold. I am not fashionable but my look works for me and people generally like it. Am a hippyish natural fibre chunky boots person and there is nothing I can’t do in my clothes from walking the dogs to presenting on camera. Also I do yoga, lift weights and walk twice as far as I used to. These things are the ones that keep you feeling amazing too.

I buy my stuff on Vinted and generally get old Cos or Baukjen ir Bam or Me and Em or Kin or Gudrensojen (or whatever it’s called)! Rarely spend more than £15-20 and never buy anything without pockets.

Maybe that’s your look or maybe you’re a tweedy or a jacket person or a dress person - whatever - just be comfy and love your clothes.

I like some MAC lip stain/gloss, a neutral ish blusher and mascara and you probably won’t want much else either.

Give yourself the gift of strength training - Caroline Girvan is free on YouTube. Your clothes will fit and hang better and you will feel better about yourself. The rest will follow.

EdithBond · Today 03:50

You don’t look an 18. Looks like you may be wearing clothes that are too baggy. The horizontal stripe and colours don’t help.

I’m late 50s. It’s really difficult to advise without knowing your personality and what you feel comfortable in. You have to find your own style. I never/rarely wear patterned clothes: too busy. Always go for 100% cotton, bamboo and other natural fabrics (wool, cashmere, linen, silk). Polyester and nylon are never a great look and less comfortable. I buy most things second-hand or cheap shops (e.g H&M, Primark, TK Maxx)

I advise the following:

  • Very good underwear to give you shape. Have a bra fitting in a department store. I mostly wear black underwear as I wear a lot of black. But nude is best if you wear a range of colours. Just two good bras and shape wear pants (if you have a tummy).
  • Layering is key. A plain vest with stretch that covers the tummy so you can layer shorter tops on top. Thick straps that cover a bra strap. Gives an extra layer for warmth and so the next layer doesn’t cling to your body.
  • Jeans or tracksuit bottoms. I always wear black jeans as I think they look smarter than blue denim and work with anything. The cut has to be what suits your shape. Suggest a straight cut. A wide or barrel shape is on trend right now but can make you look bigger. I go for Adidas tracksuit bottoms (stripes help elongate) in a wider leg.
  • Good quality plain white cotton t-shirts. Can be from somewhere cheap: Primark H&M. No need to spend a fortune. A white collar brightens the face. I also wear bright, jewel-coloured tees, e.g. bright pink, bright green etc. I think pastels are aging.
  • Plain round-neck, light-weight cardigans. Much more versatile than a jumper. Can be worn fully buttoned, fully undone as a layer, buttoned at just the top or in the middle. Make sure they’re well-fitted (rather than baggy) and sit on your waist, rather than covering hips. Cotton, light wool or cashmere. My cotton ones from H&M have lasted years.
  • When you go out, scarfs and long pendants to add interest and more layering. They elongate your shape.
  • Trainers. I tend to wear plain black platform Vans, as versatile/I can wear for work.
  • Make up: tinted moisturiser; light, reflective concealer for eye bags; cream blush applied with a good brush; eyeliner on top lash; mascara, and (always) a pop of colour on the lips.

Good luck! 💐

Junebugbug · Today 03:03

John Lewis do a personal shopper service, maybe now you are in a different era you could get someone to give you a bit of TLC and find some pieces that reflect how you want to feel.

Also a blonde highlight always helps me haha. But it is expensive and difficult to maintain.

I always feel better just doing eyebrows and mascara, you could always get your brows tinted and shaped by someone if you don't feel confident doing it.

Sounds like you need a bit of a pamper rather than there's anything wrong with how you look, like you've realised you're not prioritising self care or how you make yourself feel about yourself.

It's nice to remeet yourself when you realise you've moved to a new era.
