"Locking" threads........any chance?

dunno about locking threads, but being able to delete the really offensive posts would be handy sometimes.

RTKM - it's not going to be a cure all... just another in the arsenal. No, it wouldn't be effective with trolls jumping around threads - you'd still need swift tech response for that.

Also bear in mind that threads would be flagged and be able to be unlocked as soon as tech or whoever were available again and disagreed with the ruling. If a mod was abusing the power, they could fairly quickly be removed of that power.

I think some who weren't around on Friday with puma miss the point that the initial thread was started by another mn not T and when it was trolled the op asked for it to be deleted which promptly happened, then the troll went mad on a series of threads so that is maybe a similar situation to a thread lock if someone is determined to insult which troll was, the problem in that case was a troll not a thread...

Personally, I think the mods are generally pretty impartial when it comes to leaping in with a Mod hat on. I'm sure Lou has threatened to mod herself before.

Agree with SoupDragon about the clear difference. On the site my dh runs there is a thread locking system but it is used EXTREMELY rarely. Heated debate is never discouraged (just as well really, lol..) but ad hominen attacks are usually stomped on fairly fast, especially if they get completely out of hand. As a result, the quality of debate has improved (well okay, mostly), simply because people have worked out they're not going to get away with attacking the person not the argument...

The mods on here are generally excellent and hands-off, but that's not necessarily always going to be the case; that's what would worry me, especially in the cases of things like feeding debates where mods might conceivably hold strong personal views that could affect their judgement.

Well true, but look how custardo's post on mumsnetters and their habits turned around a potentially stroppy thread recently. If a power crazed Enid, say, had locked it we'd miss gems like that! Gotta wake my baby, back later!

I for one think that there is a time and place for locking. But i think it needs to be done with care. I for one have been told to drop a subject before i feel that i have aired the views i have held. It is very difficult and also boring to say.. opps cant mention that.

Obviously if a thread is inciting racism etc then it should be stopped.

I personally feel that most discussio/debate reach a natural end. I wonder if this thread is related to the recent sagas on the site.

tbh i have been 'told off' by some for starting yet another thread but the beauty of mn is the freedom of speech and expression within reasonable limits as in not name calling or abusive (unless twatting QE with my ds's sword)
