i think good anglo saxon swear words do the job better than most others. for example wigwam, how would you say that a situation of f*cked up better with use of other words. yes, you might describe the situation in more detail with more nuance, but i challenge you to find a way of describing it that has more impact or emphasises the feelings of the poster better!

WWB, that was tongue-in-cheek, I certainly wouldn't like to see it as a user name. I visit a football messageboard sometimes, and one of the mods on the site has it as his username; doesn't seem to cause offence there but then it is male-orientated.

well I've been sworn at by someone on this thread and while it wasn't nice I didn't get personally affronted or make judgments about the calibre of the poster, it just happens and you get over it.

I also think that using swearing in posts, particularly when using asterisks, is less offensive than chosing an offensive name. It implies a lack of respect for those who are reading the posts - in the same way as those posters who called themselves Tw@tshanks and W*g, in my opinion, were showing lack of respect, and setting out to make an impact by way of what they called themselves rather than by way of what they said. I do find it had to believe that you didn't think people would apply sexual connotations - surely that's why you chose the name?

And I didn't actually say that I thought swearing was less intelligent or used less brain power. In my opinion, it's a lazy way of speaking when there are other words to use that more than adequately fit the bill. Just my opinion, and I'm entitled to it, even if you do think it's b*llocks.

I think phucknuckle is more overtly offensive - you can't avoid it. snafu can be read as a word in its own right rather than what it stands for. Whilst I know what it stands for, I never read it as that.

People didn't like it because it sounds sexually agressive, I think.

I think that's why nobody liked it, anyway.....?

If phucknuckle is offensive what about some others? Snafu (an acronym for Situation Normal All Fcked U*p)? Is that less offensive?

Can't say either of these names bothers me, so I hope those who bear these names are not offended. I'm just making a point that perhaps telling people that their chosen names are offensive is in itself offensive.

i think if profanities did not aptly describe how you feel, then they would be useless. i personally think they are sd good as any other dewcriptive word or phrase. to insinuate that becuase for instance i might say " i am very f*cked off today" rather than " i am upset /annoyed today" and that one phrase takes more brain power than the other is b8llocks. as is the limited vocab argument.

i'm not 'offended' per se, but think it's a relief that the poster didn't realise the connotations of the name when they started using it.

i'm not into censorship, and this is a site for grownups (there are far more important things that i'd be worried about ds seeing then the swearing on here tbh)....but that doesn't mean that i can't find something a big dubious does it?

If your personal expressionism is so dependent on profanities then that's a shame. There are so many more expressive and less offensive words to use, far more creatively.

the ph instead of the F is the same as the * replacing the vowel in the profanity. the only reason i can remember being given for this introduction was that some kids sit on parents knees whilst they are on mumsnet and may read it - it hink this is a f8cking p8ss poor excuse and this attack on my personal expressionism by a site which frequently has one of the matriarchs posting when there is a ding dong along the lines of .....mumsnet isn;t into censorship ..now all be good and get along.... kind of thing has always reinforced my positive view of this site. however its all getting very f88king ars8y, in fact its getting right on my t8tties. becuase phrased correctly you can have any twutcocking word made into a fetwetting profanity.
